To be fed up and frustrated with my stupid hair?

Going on big holiday in a few weeks. I've worked hard to look good for it, eating right, exercising, skin care etc but I sometimes wonder what's the point? I always look a mess because of my stupid frizzy hair. It's curly, not cute curly but Monica from friends curly, a hint of warmth and it goes full Afro.

I've just been looking at my Thailand holiday photos from a few years back and I look ridiculous in all of them, like a comical nutty professor.

I know it's a first world problem but it's really getting me down, it makes me so self conscious. I'm 38, the frizz makes me look 68.

Either tie it up or get a good shorter cut and embrace the frizz.

Readyfortheschoolhols · 27/07/2018 15:50

What products have you tried?
My hair was very straight, now is wavy at 47!!
I put a bit of asda curl cream on it - no frizz and the waves are very tamed!!
I have tried branded products with lesser results!!

Curly girl method?

delphguelph · 27/07/2018 15:51

the weather does not help tbh

AndInShortIWasAfraid · 27/07/2018 15:51

I feel your pain. It's not an easy fix but have you tried a relaxer or Brazilian straightening? You have to be good with the upkeep but I have 4C hair and it's all that works for me.

dontlikebeards · 27/07/2018 18:37

John frieda frizz ease works for me.

Cismyass · 27/07/2018 18:38

I am also 38 and have accepted my hair is shite. No matter what i do it looks awful - Tried different colours, styles, every product going. Nope still fucking awful. Flowers

I'm a convert to Kerastraight treatment. The only thing I've found that completely changed my hair. Wish I'd heard about it years ago. Not cheap, but works.

OneStepSideways · 27/07/2018 18:50

Get a good cut and blow dry it using a Babyliss Big Hair, takes all the frizz out and relaxes the curl without losing the body. It turns my frizzy curls into smooth, bouncy waves. If it's long enough try a v-cut with long layers, it takes the thickness out and makes it easier to style.

edwinbear · 27/07/2018 18:53

Nanokeratin blow dry. Like a Brazilian blow dry but much better for your hair, I’ve just spent two weeks in Mexixo without a single frizzy hair in sight, it just air dries, sleek and straight. Even between dips in the pool/sea Grin

Curly girl method 100% I spent most of my life hating my hair, but now I actually love it!

chajazam · 27/07/2018 19:05

Curly girl here too!

Bossyboots88 · 27/07/2018 19:24

I'm the total opposite. Thin and straight no volume whatsoever, it's awful.

HeavenIsNotAPlaceAtWork · 27/07/2018 19:43

Keratin treatment! Look on eBay as you can do it at home for a fraction of salon price.

SlimGin · 27/07/2018 20:30

Completely sympathise with you. My hair is never nice on holiday/anywhere warm/after a wash/anywhere without access to straighteners. I feel like my natural frizz completely changes the way I look in a bad way. I embraced natural a few years ago where damage from straighteners had damaged it to a point I had to give it a 'break' but slowly reverted back. Interested in PPs kerastraight treatment!

DickTERFin · 27/07/2018 20:33

Curly girl method. I’ve gone from frizzy wavy mess that was always tied back because even after an hour of styling it would just frizz back up to lovely soft corkscrew curls.

specialsubject · 27/07/2018 20:41

loreal xttenso or wella straight done by a competent hairdresser. costs but should last a year. wont go dead straight but will be smooth and have shine.

goodbye ghastly ageing curls, hello ability to use a comb and being noticed for something other than ghastly ageing curls.

DesignStatement · 27/07/2018 20:43

Only aftercare for Kerastraight treatment is to use Sulphate and Sodium free shampoo and conditioner. Apart from more expensive salon brands, does anybody know a cheaper brand that could be bought on high street?

GavinsStacey · 27/07/2018 20:45

What is the curly girl method?

TheLionRoars1110 · 27/07/2018 20:49

What's wrong with an Afro exactly!? People with Afro's don't look 'a mess' Hmm

MisstoMrs · 27/07/2018 20:55

Have a relaxer put on in a salon that specialises in African hair.

Troels · 27/07/2018 20:59

Mines a mess like that today, I drove home with the car window open and I'm a frizz bomb.
Normally it looks fine. No shampoo ever, well I did when I got some smelly smoke from a bonfire in it Wash with a coconut conditioner. I use Boots own cheapy bottle. Then leave in a heavier conditioner while I wash/shave my legs etc, I am using Pantene repair one at the moment, but I don't seem to get a buildup like some people do so don't worry about ingredients. Then rinse, pull a small blob of the boots stuff through and use a wide comb. after I'm dressed I use either a tiny bit of fantasia frizz buster, or Body shop hair butter. Pull a few curls into submission and leave it to dry. Don't play with it, it'll frizz up. If it's a bit windy I put a spray of hairspray once dry on and off you go.
Nex thing I need to do is buy a car with A/C..

Relaxers for African hair are too strong for most other types of hair. I have dry coarse that frizzes in humid conditions. Kerastraight is very different to the harsh chemical treatments and lasts 3/4 months. It changed my hair to manageable hair resistant to frizzing at the slightest dampness in the air.

SoShinySoChrome · 27/07/2018 21:23

Relaxers ‘for African hair’ are also too strong for African hair funny enough. Afro hair is actually the most fragile hair type.

User12879923378 · 27/07/2018 21:26

Wash your hair. Use a lot of light conditioner for thin hair. Leave it in. Make finger twist curls using the conditioner as if it was mousse and adding more if needed. Diffuse dry or leave to dry naturally. You should get lovely smooth shiny curls.
