The email I’ve received does not have any personal details apart from my name - it just tells me to log into government gateway to find out what my new tax code is. Postal correspondence has your NI number etc but emails don’t necessarily - my email was definitely from them as they had changed my tax code (and I’ve just been on the phone with them telling them to change it to what it actually should be, not the fantasy scenario where I will be earning an extra £19 grand this year!!)

EnolaAlone · 27/07/2018 13:17

Yes it looks like a scam. You can report it by forwarding the email to HMRC - [email protected]

MarshaBradyo · 27/07/2018 13:17

I got a Gateway Confirmation one that looks a lot more like yours Sally asking for details, assumed that too was a big scam

HidingFromMyKids · 27/07/2018 13:18

You should always expand the email it came from. Usually obvious by the random letters or the made up company it contains

fuzzywuzzy · 27/07/2018 13:20

It’s a scam. If you click on the email you’ll see it has nothing to do with government email whatsoever.

Thelittlethingsinlife · 27/07/2018 13:20

You can get things emailed from HMRC but only if you have registered to be paperless.

mavydoes · 27/07/2018 13:22

Yup a scam.

ActionFraud are a good website to follow and report too and they are on Twitter etc.

Hullabaloo31 · 27/07/2018 13:23

Definitely, they don't email for a start!

greencatbluecat · 27/07/2018 13:24

Yes, as others have said .... definitely a scam
With those typos.

ohreallyohreallyoh · 27/07/2018 13:26

I have a refund pending - it came as a letter from HMRC and I have to claim it to be paid immediately or ignore and they’ll send me a cheque.

nocoolnamesleft · 27/07/2018 13:26

Definitely scam: at work we actually had a message from IT to warn us about such a scam email, and not to click on any links in it.

THEsonofaBITCH · 27/07/2018 13:26

You only have 24 hours to claim your money back? Definitely scam!

WhentheDealGoesDown · 27/07/2018 13:32

Yes. I had a proper email from HMRC yesterday, (Ihad requested email notification not postal) asking me to log into my account as my tax code had changed, it did say that they don’t put links in their emails and I had to go into my account as usual through the HMRC website

WhentheDealGoesDown · 27/07/2018 13:34

They do email if you request it from your tax account but don’t provide a link to the account so you won’t get emails unless you request it

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 27/07/2018 13:35

Well firstly a legit company would never shorten words. You have would never be written as 'You've'
The poor use of grammer. We have calculate instead of we have calculated.
I know anyone in any level of profession can make a mistake but surely these things are checked over first.
It might be worth calling HMRC to let them know what is happening.

craftymum01 · 27/07/2018 13:35

I get about 5 of these a day. I used to forward them to fraud department of the HMRC but can't be bothered now. Doesn't seem to stop them sending them

spottybetty · 27/07/2018 13:37

Dodgy English, definitely a scam.

BikeRunSki · 27/07/2018 13:37

Of course it’s a scam, the grammar is terrible.

HMRC just send me a cheque if I have a tax refund. They don’t know my email address.

LookAtIt · 27/07/2018 13:38

HERE is a link to the official GOV.UK site where they give info on phishing and scam emails.

The OPs scam email was a bit amateurish - there are much more convincing ones about.

Toofle · 27/07/2018 13:41

Determinate indeed.

kaldefotter · 27/07/2018 13:43

Definite scam, and not written by someone whose first language is English.

MoonsAndJunes · 27/07/2018 13:44

When you open an e-mail like this, click on the 'From' address - it will open a new tab and will show you the full address it was sent from.

I get lots from 'Apple' A quick check of the address shows that they are all scams

viques · 27/07/2018 13:55

Honestly, you don't get the quality of scammer you used to. Not even spellchecking ffs.

Seriously OP well done for checking it out, it is all too easy to be fooled if you are in a hurry, reading something quickly and doing six things at once. These people are scum, I don't know whether you can pass the details on to a fraud department at HMRC for further investigation. Though even if their spelling is awful they probably know enough to hide their internet identity.

ResurrectedGoldfish · 27/07/2018 13:58

My DH got this last year. Definitely a scam.
