Not really an a AIBU. But my house is COVERED in flies from this hot weather. How can I get rid of them? Everything on google seems to tell me how to stop them coming in to the house, when they’re actually already in here Blush

Can you borrow a cat? Mine enjoy killing and eating flies.

Seeingadistance · 26/07/2018 19:06

I noticed the other day that my mother has those sticky fly paper things in her kitchen - covered in dead and dying flies. That would be another option if the cat idea isn't for you.

InsomniacAnonymous · 26/07/2018 19:07

All our windows and most doors are open but no flies are in the house. Is there a kitchen bin that needs emptying or something that's attracting them?

Greysgirl · 26/07/2018 19:07

This is advice from DH who has been a pest controller for 20 years. Get some fly spray and spray for about 20 seconds in each room, then close the door and they’ll die and you can hoover them up. Do not spray in rooms with other animals or fish etc obviously.

MrsJayy · 26/07/2018 19:08

It is disgusting isn't it we bought a fly screen at the weekend cuts them down we fly sprayed before putting it up I appreciate if you have children or/and pets you dont want to be fly spraying.

Greysgirl · 26/07/2018 19:08

Ps, he also said spray any nooks and crannies around doors and windows with raid which will put them off coming in.

Saltandsauce · 26/07/2018 19:10

I hear you! It’s the exact same in my house, as soon as a door is open at least 3 flies come in! I’m permanently walking about with a dish cloth on my shoulder ready to kill the little bastards!
Think I’m gonna try the strips, I just hate the idea of them just hanging there 😬
Good luck, hope you manage to find a solution! X

Squirrelfruitandnutkin · 26/07/2018 19:10

I got fed up with them this afternoon. I half filled a jam jar with some water and a few drops of essential oils - lavender, mint, lemonade all meant to be good to deter flies. Then I put in a tea light and lit it.

There’s no flies in the kitchen now at all! There were loads earlier and the door has been open all day.

Haberpop · 26/07/2018 19:11

Flyscreens work wonders.

Nomad86 · 26/07/2018 19:12

Hoover attachment, works brilliantly.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 26/07/2018 19:12

Red top fly traps for outside, they look horrible and they stink but they catch thousands.

People on here have a,so recommended Venus fly traps and pitcher plants, I got some and they're on hunger strike I think.

Knittingteapot · 26/07/2018 19:13

We had this last year! Millions of fruit flies. Got rid of them by putting tubs of vinegar mixed with sugar and washing up liquid around the downstairs. We did have to keep doing it as they reappeared but it cleared a lot of them out.

Greenteandchives · 26/07/2018 19:16

i finally gave in and put sticky fly papers up. I just don’t look at them as I feel really mean and hate the thought of them getting stuck and struggling to get free. Sad They were dead cheap in the hardware shop.

Guacamole2506 · 26/07/2018 19:19

Ahhh so many suggestions - thank you!! Looks like off on a hunt for fly tape tomorrow. Already got glasses of vinegar and fairy liquid dotted about the houseWink. I’ll have to get some fly spray too and let the house rabbits have a run in the garden tomorrow

We have strips we hang over the door - like the beaded strips but plastic strips and this seems to stop the majority. If you are in the country though am afraid it is the season and you may need to do the fly strip thing

Butterflykissess · 26/07/2018 19:20

Dont bother with cats. I have one and their food/poo will attract MORE flies and mine doesnt care about flies so doesnt try to catch them. I feel your pain though. My outside bin was covered in flies earlier! Seriously must of been hundreds of them!

DartfordBridge · 26/07/2018 19:22

Raid fly spray as per pp

GettingBackToMe · 26/07/2018 19:23

Are you absolutely sure there is nowhere inside your house that they are hatching from? Like at the bottom of the bin, or under a kitchen unit or something?

Ukelou · 26/07/2018 19:23

Dont use fly papers if u have a budgie, my exmils budgie got stuck on one once took ages for its feathers to grow back.

Guacamole2506 · 26/07/2018 19:23

The whole house has been cleaned top to bottom (it was already very tidy), I’ve disinfected everything, cleaned the rabbits out, bleached all the bins and nothing is working so far! I think the problem is we live in terraced housing so our bin has to go out the front, which means that whenever windows are opened they’re coming straight in Sad.

Ukelou sorry but that made me smile. Grin

Butterflykissess · 26/07/2018 19:25

Your house can be clean and still get flies. My sisters house is spotless yet shes always complaining about flies.

MrsJayy · 26/07/2018 19:26

I had the tiny flies coming up my kitchen sink I just put a boiling kettle down and i am triple bagging food recycling my food bin outside is rank i fly sprayed that

finnmcool · 26/07/2018 19:26

This is only to stop them coming in I'm afraid.
If you hang a white carrier bag with water and pennies in it, on your door, they think it's a bees nest or something.
I've tried it and have no flies, that could just be a fluke though! Grin
