Not really an a AIBU. But my house is COVERED in flies from this hot weather. How can I get rid of them? Everything on google seems to tell me how to stop them coming in to the house, when they’re actually already in here Blush

Do you have fruit or any other food out? Something may be attracting the little blighters.

AnnaMagnani · 26/07/2018 19:28

This year, a one year old cat is proving v effective Grin

More helpfully a fly killer cassette in each room is long lasting and unobtrusive.

Although I would strongly recommend cats.

blueberriesandyogurt · 26/07/2018 19:29

We are also plagued by flies as are all my neighbours. The local shops have sold out of Raid and the cheap alternative I got from the corner shop needs you to drown them in spray to kill them

nokidshere · 26/07/2018 19:29

I spray with raid every hour. Still getting the odd one but nowhere near the loads we had last week

Kirbs1979 · 26/07/2018 19:31

If you get the sticky fly strips don't forget it's there, walk into it and pull a chunk of your hair out ConfusedBlush

We had a blue bottle infestation. The stove fire door was closed but they were coming from underneath. Something must have died in chimney. Fly spray sorted it.

BigGlasses · 26/07/2018 19:37

Our cat eats them. It’s disgusting but very efficient and he loves them. Munchy crunchy snacks

MrsJayy · 26/07/2018 19:40

My dog was drivinghimself insane trying to catch them all

ourkidmolly · 26/07/2018 19:40

Saw on Instagram today that a candle lit beside a bowl of apple cider vinegar is the way forward. They're monstrous this year.

HeavenKnowsImMiserableCow · 26/07/2018 19:41

I had same bought a rentokil fly pen off Amazon you go round your windows with the clear pen. It works brilliantly and lasts for ages without having to reapply and doesn’t smell

Itsveryhard · 26/07/2018 19:43

Weve got fly papers everywhere, I don't want to spray stuff and this works even though they look awful

ToadOfSadness · 26/07/2018 19:45

I have adhesive velcro (the hook side only), a big roll of it and it is stuck around every window that we open, some cheap fine net curtains (Lill from IKEA) cut up and stuck on it. Keeps all flying bugs out as long as you keep it stuck down and no poisons to inhale.

Still get the odd one come through the doors, but contain them to one room, if it is the kitchen we marshall them towards the door and encourage them outside.

I also have net over air vents as we had bees making their way in earlier this year.

Apparently they don't like mint, have seen no evidence of this though.

Walkingthedog46 · 26/07/2018 19:45

I am plagued with flies this year. I put it down to the bin collection now being fortnightly instead of weekly. No matter how clean I keep the bin there are sometimes flies all over the closed lid, despite regularly spraying it with fly spray.

MissusGeneHunt · 26/07/2018 19:46

Red top fly traps are fabulous! It's like Fly City here but they catch 'em goooood!!

BertieBotts · 26/07/2018 19:46

Yes you've got to work out where they are coming from. If it's the bin maybe keep putting bleach on it to stem the flow?

Check your drains as well. Stick washing up liquid, or toilet cleaner down them and then boiling water. Should clear any slime from the insides of the pipes which maggots may be living in.

MrsJayy · 26/07/2018 19:48

Oh god we are going to get the wasps soon Shock

Guacamole2506 · 26/07/2018 19:48

@walkingthedog46 we’re the exact same. They took ours this morning and it’s been cleaned out properly - but there’s still flies hanging around it even though it’s empty and stinks of domestos

Ladybirdbookworm · 26/07/2018 19:50

If you have any houseplants or flowers in the house check they aren't fly ridden. Even a tub of basil on the kitchen worktop once caused my house to be literally covered in flies.

TheClitterati · 26/07/2018 19:50

Are they flies or the tiny "fruit" flies.

Turns out fruit flies are probably drain flies and you can get rid of them if you are persistent. Google "drain flies".

MarshaBradyo · 26/07/2018 19:52

My house is ok now

But I had an event the other day when I cooked some in date Ocado chicken corn which was just in

The smell was enough to bring in the fly apocalypse

It was like the scene from Black Mirror with the killer bees

They were not apologetic bloody Ocado
(Usually like them)

WhatAnAbsolutePenis · 26/07/2018 19:52

Fly spray.

As people have suggested.
I had flies, now I don’t because FLY SPRAY.

The answer was about 3 posts down, and repeated throughout.

AdoraBell · 26/07/2018 19:56

Wasps I can cope with. Flies on the other hand

Have used citronella candles in the past. Can’t use for spray because of dogs, so I’m going to try the essential oil in water/candle trick.

ladycarlotta · 26/07/2018 19:58

fly paper has worked for us, I'm afraid. It looks awful but it catches literally every single one.

There is a short prose piece called Fly Paper by Robert Musil, I recommend that you do not read it.
