Hi all,

I am a newly qualified driver over the age of 25. I expected insurance to be expensive but I'm being quoted online between £818 (with a tracker box) to well over £1000! I would understand if I were 17-18 or even under 25, is this really normal? Should I phone some of these companies and try to haggle it down or is that not done?

Nope! My 44 year old husband who has had a license for 25years had to pay a premium at like this when we returned from overseas (granted, he drives a wanky car, but it's obscene)

yerbutnobut · 26/07/2018 21:00

sugarhunny, I am misinformed! I passed last year and when DH contacted his insurance company to add me as a named driver onto his already fully comp policy, we were told on phone that as a named only I would only be covered as third party, fire and theft!
You learn something new everyday! I do have my own car now anyway but this is good to know thanks!

Chocolate1984 · 26/07/2018 21:04

I passed my test in 1998 and my insurance cost £1600 third party fire & theft. Next year it only went down to £1400.

useruseruser · 26/07/2018 21:05

That’s cheap for a new driver.
Would pay more to not have the box though.

Pinklady11 · 26/07/2018 21:09

@yerbutnobut but breaching a policy term is very different to committing a criminal act. Just making sure people realise that. Chill!!

youknowwherethecityis · 26/07/2018 21:11

That's fairly cheap I think. We pay over £700 with 10 years no claims bonus

emoji · 26/07/2018 21:13

When I was 28 we bought a large luxury car and because of my age the insurance was just under £3k. Despite having been driving for 10 years. I was outraged!

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 26/07/2018 21:13

My Dh and I are Confusednamed drivers on each other’s policy and are covered fully comp, same as the main driver.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 26/07/2018 21:14

I don’t know where that Confused face came from Grin

Stormwhale · 26/07/2018 21:16

Last year I had quotes of over £750 into the thousands. I had had my license for 7 years! My car isn't high powered, I had 8 years no claims. This year has been much more reasonable, but compared to my quotes last year I would say yours were fair.

Leatherboundanddown · 26/07/2018 21:17

I was with admiral black box at age 29 with only a 1 litre engine and it was £980 the first year! Down to 600 after 1 yr no claims

lljkk · 26/07/2018 21:17

18yo DS is paying £1.5k with tracker box. Without box, he was quoted £2.5-£4k. YES, £4k!

RedneckStumpy · 26/07/2018 21:17

As usual the UK is a ripoff

lljkk · 26/07/2018 21:17

Actually... I think DS is paying £1.9k with box. More than he paid for the car, anyway.

electricavenue7 · 26/07/2018 21:18

That's normal, quite good in fact! I got my first car after passing my test at 25 and it was about £900 for insurance.

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 26/07/2018 21:18

I have been driving 14 years. Many years NCD and no convictions, one ongoing no fault claim and my insurance is £600 per year, so I think that's more than reasonable.

Noodledoodledoo · 26/07/2018 22:30

Rather than you being a named driver could you add someone to your policy to see if it will reduce it.

If I add my dad on to mine who does drive it but about 2-3 times a year max, (he lives 4 hours away and comes by train) it brings it down. Nothing dodgy about it, I am the main driver but him and my husband are listed - when I removed him it went up so he stays on it!

Cheerio99 · 26/07/2018 22:34

Yes add experienced drivers to the policy, it brings mine down a lot.

catlady34 · 26/07/2018 22:45

That's standard, should go down quite a lot when you've got a year of no claims though. Mine went from £800 to £400

Lilmisskittykat · 26/07/2018 22:50

I'd think that's pretty normal

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 26/07/2018 23:03

Thats about the price for ds1 car insurance when he passed, high 800's

He had a black box and it came down about £40 for the 2nd year of insurance without the black box

We haven't to,d him we got rid of the black box...he think he still has one Grin

Im looking forward to telling him on the 1st of November...he is gonna be sooooo pissed

TicketyBoo83 · 26/07/2018 23:10

No that’s pretty good for a new driver! I learned at 28 and was close to £1000 for my first year. I ended up going with admiral for the first few years - you can insure for 10 months so cheaper but it still counts as a year for no claims bonus. That way you save a bit of money and build up your no claims faster.

Imustbemad00 · 26/07/2018 23:13

That’s still cheaper than the quotes I’m getting now, Been driving 2 years so have 2 years no claims bonus and no fines or points. My first year was around the 2k mark.

Imustbemad00 · 26/07/2018 23:13

And I’m over 30

Sparkles1992 · 26/07/2018 23:16

That's great for first year my first year was £2400 and then it halved and it's now £49 a month after 6 years
