To complain about this hotel room?

I might be being a bit spoilt and am happy to be told so. I am on a summer holiday with my dd (6) it's not going well. I paid just over £2000 so have been saving all year. The weather here is crap which is a massive disappointment but nobody's fault obviously. Then the room I'm in, it is tiny, with a balcony so small that I have to breathe in to walk along it and can only sit on it if I keep completely still. Not a big deal except that dd can't cope with late nights every night so will have to go at 8pm at least 3 times so I had counted on sitting on the balcony with a good book during these evenings. We're sharing a very small double bed which is very uncomfortable (requested a twin room) and the room is tiny, dark and smells strongly of damp. Nothing dries on the balcony as it is sort of squashed between two bigger rooms, we're at the bend of an L shaped building. I just feel so miserable after saving hard all year. However the outside of the hotel is nice and the room is in a good location so it's not all bad. What do you think, complain or count my blessings! Thanks.

I would just go to reception and politely say that the room smells of damp and is very small and ask if you can be moved.

I work in a hotel and if I had spare rooms and you were nice to me, I would move you.

OneThreadOnly0101 · 26/07/2018 09:57

Where are you?

Agree with asking reception if it's possible to move rooms...

Wishiwasonholiday1 · 26/07/2018 10:00

I would definitely go and speak to reception and explain the situation.
Is there any reason why you've got a double when you requested a twin?

WowserBowser · 26/07/2018 10:04

I missed the bit about the twin!! Definitely say something!

Sunnybeachbabe · 26/07/2018 10:09

Thanks, I'm in Bulgaria and they haven't been particularly helpful or communicative so far so I didn't ask about the twin bed thing. I think for the first night or two I kind of thought, it's not a big deal and loads of parents share beds with their kids so I'd just suck it up. She wet the bed last night too though (first time in a year) so this is getting me down.

Yes, definitely ask reception if they will move you. The damp smell should be enough.

9amTrain · 26/07/2018 10:13

Definitely ask. You clearly aren't getting what you've paid for. Did you book through a travel agent or direct?

Sunnybeachbabe · 26/07/2018 10:25

Train, it's with TUI.

Please do go and ask to be moved. After paying that amount of money the least you should expect is that you get what you paid for - a twin room. In any case it shouldn't smell of damp and you should have a proper balcony. Be polite, but insistent - state what you would like and why. Good luck!

confusedgirl123 · 26/07/2018 10:51

I would definitely complain. But i am a 'complainer' I don't like to feel robbed and this definitely sounds disappointing. Before you complain ask yourself what do you want to get out of complaining? Different room / money back etc

Letsnotargue · 26/07/2018 10:55

I would ask to be moved but be polite about it. I had a bite for one night when my dad was in hospital, it was boiling and I turned up and the aircon didn’t work. They moved me to a fancy room with working aircon. The guy behind me was rude and shouty and got fobbed off with a fan. It might not work, but you can always bring out the big guns later if they’re not being helpful.

Everyone should get what they pay for at the very least. Hope your holiday improves.

Letsnotargue · 26/07/2018 10:56

Bite = room, bizarrely

Butcowsdontgetmarried · 26/07/2018 11:07

Honestly - just ask politely if you can move as you want a twin, and if they can do they will do. For them, it avoids TUI deducting money from them because you complained after the holiday and TUI ha did to comp you.
If you say about the damp smell they will send someone to spray/clean, and I bet everyone in that room moans about the balcony/view so I wouldn’t bother mentioning those.
If they can’t or won’t move you then speak to the TUI rep and explain you are not happy, at this point you can offload about the damp/balcony/twin and that they couldn’t move you. Really, you will beunlikely to be moved even to another hotel, but you may be offered compo.

mydietstartsmonday · 26/07/2018 11:11

You booked this holiday, is it as described in the brochure? Talk to your rep and say how disappointed you are and this is not what you paid for £2k is a lot of money.
For a £1 each I would expect a good size hotel room with a decent balcony in a 4* hotel.

JT05 · 26/07/2018 11:20

None of this is acceptable. Take photos of the room. See the rep. and ask to be moved. If possible put your complaint in writing there and then or ask for a complaint form.
It’s notoriously difficult to get compensated after you’ve had the holiday.
Once we had a shocking holiday in Slovenia, a Thomsons ‘platinum ‘ hotel. The food was disgusting, like old school dinners with pots of yoghurt for dessert! No gin in the bar. We complained to the rep who was totally useless. We had to eat out every night.
No compensation because we did not fill in a complaint form in the resort! We were not offered one.

CrispsAndDip · 26/07/2018 11:22

Which hotel are you in? I stayed in Majestic hotel and it was fab.

Definitely speak to them about the room!

Sunnybeachbabe · 26/07/2018 12:23

Thanks for giving me a backbone!! I found our room online described as a "studio for single traveller" I also dug our our paperwork which said "twin room"
Went to Reception and (very politely) explained the situation. No twin rooms available but we have now moved into a much nicer room with a large double, non mouldy bathroom and a big balcony. Result!!
The manager was all professional but receptionist and porters were nodding sympathetically which made me think that those rooms are well known!

Pleased for you, now you can enjoy your well earned holiday.

AjasLipstick · 26/07/2018 12:33

OP I hope it improves ...maybe in future, consider spending your hard earned money on a UK holiday in a nice cottage or something? More freedom for your DD and you!

AJPTaylor · 26/07/2018 12:33

well done.
i once had a hotel try and give me and my parents a two bed apartment when we had booked 2 one bed apartments. they tried hard to tell me it was the same. well apart from the extra bathroom, lounge, balcony and kitchen!

isseywithcats · 26/07/2018 12:36

enjoy the rest of your holiday in Tunisia i was given an awful room with a view of a gulley ful;l of rubbish, so did this went to reception politely said i wasnt happy with the room and they gave us one with a sea view

Chickenbhunaandoice · 26/07/2018 13:00

Still complain to the travel company that you didnt get a twin. They will probably give you a small amount. Also explain about the 1st room- how many nights were you in it- calculate the difference and request a refund.

Tell them how much you want, i.e. I want £200 because XXXXXX

savagebaggagemaster · 26/07/2018 13:10

Hooray! Well done! We are about to complain to Loveholiday about our hotel (a building site!) but that's another story!
