I can’t get to a hospital until tomorrow evening - I am stuck at home with my 2 young DS’.

I have an abscess in my bottom lip. Yes, you heard me right my lip!! I was prescribed flucloxacillin antibiotics on Tuesday morning when the infection arose.

My lip is swollen x4 of its usual size. It is very painful to the touch, red and slightly weeping. It is full of pus.

I feel ok within myself - no fever, chills etc but a little nauseous.

Still taking antibiotics and alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Is there anything I can do to naturally draw the pus out? The pressure and swelling is massive - I think this is what is knocking me sick.

No swelling to the rest of my face its located all inside the bottom lip.

Any help is appreciated.

Hoping that no recent posts from op means you've gone to get it seen.
Hope things are ok with you op

GiBlues · 26/07/2018 21:51

Hope everything is ok, I’ve been checking this all day for an update

QOD · 27/07/2018 08:18

Please update

ohdeardeardear · 27/07/2018 08:22

OP how are things?

LakieLady · 27/07/2018 10:49

I'd like an update too!

Hope you're ok, OP.

Scared2BeHomeless · 27/07/2018 20:42

Hi all, sorry its taken so long to get back to you.

Went to A+E to get it drained. Thankfully the relieving of the pressure has stopped the pain but im now left with a 5p piece sized hole in my lip which needs to be packed to heal. Looks vile!

Thanks for your concern and well wishes.

My goodness what a dreadful wound!
Do you know what caused it?
Did you have a piercing?

BarbarianMum · 27/07/2018 21:00

OP to help keep it draining and to help it heal:
Totally fill a milk bottle with hot (as hot as you can bear it) salty water and hold it to the wound x4 a day. I'd have told you to do this yesterday to help burst it if Id seen your thread in time.
This is how we (friends and I) were taught to treat boils and tropical ulcers when we lived beyond the reach of medical care. Have tried it. Works.

REOLay · 27/07/2018 21:13

Oh I'm SO relieved to hear back from you, your poor thing. Well done for getting it looked at - you absolutely did the right thing. I've been quietly fretting about you.

So, on to wound healing. I know a lot more about this than I would like to, having had open wounds multiple times, including infected ones, though not on my face.

Packing is super weird, but you get accustomed to it. There should be a schedule of dressing changes and wound checks, which usually happen with nurse team a total yours GP. If this isn't in place yet then get onto them tomorrow about it. Mine have usually been every two or three days in early stages, getting less frequent as the infection comes under control.

Please please please don't put hot salty water on it, or anything else not specifically advised by the wound nurse. Talk to your surgery nurses about how to look after it best. Usually for me that's been icing it to help with swelling and itching, but facial wounds may have different protocol.

Depending on the wound depth and size and degree of infection, they will choose the best dressing and packing types to get optimal healing conditions. Their knowledge is incredible!

An open cavity wound has to heal by secondary intention, which basically means from the bottom up. The packing helps it not close over before the inside bit has filled up.

It can take quite a while, and you will need to be super patient and look after yourself and rest as much a step you can. I know that's easy to say, but healing stuff like this takes a lot out of you. Sleep as much as you can.

So, best nutrition you can manage, probiotic tablets or yoghurt things, and ask for a blood test if you feel you may be anaemic at all. Anaemia slows healing and makes you vulnerable to recurrent infection.

Feel free to message me if you want solidarity. I'm trying to heal up a four inch infected cavity wound and it's knackering!

Scared2BeHomeless · 27/07/2018 21:18

Thanks, I have had this before in my back (have a lovely bullet hole scar) so am aware of the joys of packing! Was so long ago though and this has brought it all back.

I am struggling to eat if im honest, ive hardly eaten for 3 days. Can drink through a thin straw at the side of my mouth.

Nothing exciting, just a surgical wound that isn't happy. Apparently infections like me. It's not mutual. Infected wound in a heatwave is making me very resentful! I have to be taped up with plastic bags and electrical tape to have a shower. Sexy!

Glad you've been though the packing thing before, iyswim. It's a learning curve otherwise!

Nutrition is going to need some help then. Ask your gone about high calorie liquid food. You may be able to get some on prescription if funds are tight and you qualifying for free scripts. Otherwise have a look online and get some sent to you asap.

And a massive multipack of straws, or two or three of those fancying pants stainless steel ones you can get now.

And thin soup, fortified with marmite if you can bear it. Good with borscht. Supermarket pots of fresh stock would make a good base that you can put some puréed veg into maybe?

Scared2BeHomeless · 27/07/2018 22:21

Haha, I’ve been there and done that with duct tape and bin bags! Never for a moment thought I’d get it on my lip of all places though.

You poor thing, its really does make you miserable...the heat is the cherry on the top.

Thanks for the advice on food, will try and head to asda tomorrow with my ridiculous looking face. Its so hard to attach a wound pad without covering my whole mouth.

So pleased you've been seen I've kept checking back in case of an update. Good luck with the healing both of you.

aperolspritzplease · 27/07/2018 23:13

Oh goodness! I hope it closes nicely Gin

Batfurger · 27/07/2018 23:21

Must have been a piercing (therefore self inflicted) otherwise OP would have answered the many questions on the subject.

Brieonabagel · 27/07/2018 23:23

So glad you got seen. Wishing you a speedy recovery Flowers
Did you take your dc with you?

downinthejunglee · 27/07/2018 23:40

@Batfurger or OP doesn't know what caused it, a lot of these can actually come from out of the blue

REOLay · 27/07/2018 23:49

Batfurger, why on earth would you have a pop at someone who currently has an infected hole in their lip?

Did you have a bad day or something? Or some traumatic experience with a piercing maybe?

REOLay · 27/07/2018 23:51

At least my comically massive dressing is out of sight. It's like having a nappy strapped to me at the moment, but loose clothing is ok. Are you able to speak?

wowsertrousers · 27/07/2018 23:54

Batfurger, what a totally wanky and unnecessarily judgey post. Kudos.

OP, really glad you managed to get it seen.

Scared2BeHomeless · 28/07/2018 01:48

This was taken on Monday evening. No piercing, just swelling.

I can speak ok but its a bit awkward with the dressing ontop. Im put off eating incase of getting yuck in my mouth and I can’t open it so wide. Drinking is through the side of my mouth with a slim straw.

It’s just one if them things...It happens. It’s feeling better though and I’m glad you all pushed me to get it looked at Smile
