Joined a DIY group on Facebook... why is everyone covering anything they look at with sticky back plastic!?!

WIBU to counter all the "looks great hun" comments with a "WTF have you done to your fridge?!"

Lighthearted- I know I can just scroll on!

it must take an extraordinary amount of work to get it all neat without bubbles - hats off to them, though I'm sure paint would be easier and likely cheaper

bellabasset · 26/07/2018 10:59

When I was a small child mum did this back in the 50's. She covered bathroom cupboards in it. But it did start to bubble after a few years due to the steam She had a new suite put in. My preference is for paint.

I have seen it used on glass. But fablon on the stair risers, wouldn't that be slippery if you had wet feet?

I want to know about the kitchen tiles as well.

Bumbumtaloo · 26/07/2018 11:03

I absolutely love that group! Some of the stuff is actually really nice but I’m personally don’t like the glitter walls - although youngest DD does have pink glitter wallpaper, it was her choice.

I do feel sorry for the people that had glitter walls and are now trying to redecorate and are having a nightmare because of the glitter.

Bossyboots88 · 26/07/2018 11:03

@dangermouseisace I bought them pre cut from ebay. Putting them on took abit of time I had a bit of a panic putting them on because although I was going slowly I got bubbles, after reading online how to get rid of the bubbles I left them as they were and the bubbles go themselves after a few days or you can use a hairdryer to speed it up (I'm too lazy for that).

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 26/07/2018 11:14

Just reminded me that nearly thirty years ago I covered the top of a dressing table in a crappy student house in sticky backed plastic as Blue Peter used to call it. It was rather good.

I used Washi tape on the edges of the shelves in the loo, but they look wonky now because it didn't go on straight!

CrispsAndDip · 26/07/2018 11:19

I am a member of this group. My girlfriend is obsessed with fablon. She has done our kitchen cupboards which look quite good!

They also have a DIY Garden on a budget. Their current obsession is homemade water features.

There's a man on FB who sells crushed velvet kingsize bedsteads and mattresses for £99.

I can't even begin to think exactly how shit the quality must be.

SluttyButty · 26/07/2018 11:46

Bossyboots those tiles look fab! Our kitchen tiles are horrible, we moved in last year but can't afford to refit the kitchen yet. I was looking at tile pain yesterday but yours look fab done in fablon Grin

multiplemum3 · 26/07/2018 11:49

I saw someone on that group paint their sofa! Devastated I got kicked out

Stepmum3 · 26/07/2018 11:53

Thank the Lord I am not alone. Glitter was another thing too. Add glitter everywhere
Some of it looks pound shop.
I often think are they looking at the same pic.

Bossyboots88 · 26/07/2018 13:04

Thank you @sluttybutty It only cost around £30 to do the full room. I really wanted the oblong tiles putting up but I can't be done with the mess changing --plus my husband is shit at DIY but refuses to let any one else do it--I would show you the full kitchen but quite frankly it's a shit tip since the kids have been off school Grin

Bumbumtaloo · 26/07/2018 13:44

CrispsAndDip I’m on the garden group too, those water features must cost a small fortune to make once you add it all up.

SistersOfPercy · 26/07/2018 13:56

I did my worktops last year in black slate as I completely hated them in the grey (yep, I chose them 15 years ago Blush) turned out great but I have put a few burn marks on it from pans so it will be pulled off soon. Only cost me £15 so not the end of the world.
People do get a bit carried away with it though.

MiggledyHiggins · 26/07/2018 13:57

I'm in the group but I need to get in the garden group now!

Stuff not to my taste -fine.

But when you've got them putting wallpaper behind a gas cooker, knocking load-bearing walls or painting sofas it's quite entertaining, if worrying!

About a year or so ago some bloke who actually does know his stuff with DIY got utterly hounded off the page by the huns when he tried to nicely point out why their DIY project might be dangerous and how they could cheaply do it properly another way. I think the last straw was a woman who lumphammered out a wall that was supporting her stairs in a rented house. He pointed out it was load bearing and that it would make the stairs unsafe if she went ahead and he was bollocked out of it by the fablonistas and he fucked off.

dangermouseisace · 26/07/2018 16:58

Thanks @bossyboots88!

For all my poo pooing of glitter after visiting Hemways I now feel an strong desire to glitter my bike Blush (it is old and tatty BTW)

PolkerrisBeach · 26/07/2018 18:59

I had to join the group to look...

OMG. Have never seen so much glitter, grey and yellow accents in one place.

Not a scrap of individuality or creative thought among them.

5000KallaxHoles · 26/07/2018 19:27

I was in that group - left when they absolutely rounded on someone who pointed out that basically covering the walls of your rented house in glitter glued directly to the plaster and not at least doing it on lining paper so it was removable was a tad unfair to the landlord.

At that point they were all busy wallpapering their bathroom floors and covering their kitchen floors in 1p pieces.

5000KallaxHoles · 26/07/2018 19:28

I do feel sorry for the people that had glitter walls and are now trying to redecorate and are having a nightmare because of the glitter.

Oh I don't - they were warned. They were rude and abusive to the "haters" who suggested using lining paper, or buying glitter wallpaper when instead they could go and buy like 943543 containers of glitter and PVA glue from B+M and fuck it up themselves. They can now know the pain of trying to decorate over the fucking stuff.

Ridingthegravytrain · 26/07/2018 19:33

Amazing thread! I only clicked because I thought it was baby name one

crisscrosscranky · 26/07/2018 19:48

@5000KallaxHoles Ahh were they? I haven’t been on there that long. In that case, I withdraw my sympathy.

crisscrosscranky Did you see the toilet floor that had the artificial grass instead of laminate?

SluttyButty · 27/07/2018 14:23

What have you done to me! Although I'm far too afraid to comment on anything, I'm now obsessed with scrolling through the group and nosing at people's houses. Rightmove, you're dumped 😂

Theweasleytwins · 29/07/2018 08:17

It reminds me of the zoflora group I was in- unfortunately I had to leave when people started putting (flammable) zoflora in oil burners😑

nellyolsenscurl · 29/07/2018 08:56

I was in a group like that that had to close due to trolling. The craze at the finesse wallpapering every available surface, some posters had papered their walls, white goods, cupboard doors and floor(!) in a matching paper. I actually papered an old best of tables that was going in the bin anyway, they looked good for about a week and then the paper got scuffed and started calling off.
