Dh cooks pasta by putting it into a pan of cold water then putting it onto the hob. HIBU isn’t he?

I am aware that I have no moral high ground and that if I want it doing a certain way, I should just do it myself. But he’s still wrong, isn’t he?

I put it to you, MN jury...

I don't think I've ever read a thread that's shocked me so much! Your husband is a barbarian, OP!

I always put pasta in boiling water until someone told me it doesn’t stick together if you put it in cold water first. They were right it doesn’t stick. Same person told me to cook onions, when cooking a roast, in their skins. They were also right, the onions cook beautifully and quite quickly. Same person again said when you roll out pastry use a little bit of oil instead of flour. They were right again, so much easier with oil.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/07/2018 00:32

Mine doesn't stick in boiling water.

You were either not using enough water, it wasn't a proper roiling boil when you put it in, you didn't separate it properly when you put it in or you let it sit when you took it out.

Agree with all of this... I'll add my own one as well! Grin Many people don't cook pasta in a big enough pan. It makes a difference.

Big pan, deep water, rolling boil.

73kittycat73 · 26/07/2018 00:47

He does know pasta should be eaten al dente doesn't he? It's not supposed to be boiled to within an inch of its life.

See, that's how I like my pasta. Grin Can't be doing with this al dente stuff. Mind you, that's how I like my veg too. (Can hear the gasps from here! Shock Grin )

CannuckTheCrow7 · 26/07/2018 00:48

Boiling water for sure. I used to start it off in cold water and agree it tends to be more like mush.

Had a quick look at ‘How to cook pasta’ on YouTube and there seems to be consensus amongst the professional chefs in there that a rolling boil is the way to go.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/07/2018 00:51

Are you in BC @CannuckTheCrow7? From the username.

CannuckTheCrow7 · 26/07/2018 00:57

Not at this very minute but usually yes!

The man is a wholly uncivilised ANIMAL... I don't know how you cope.

If it grows below ground, it goes into cold water.

If it grows above the ground, it goes into boiling water.

Pasta very clearly, grows above the ground and therefore goes into boiling water.

Simples.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/07/2018 03:04

That works until you hit gnocchi @WiddlinDiddlin Grin

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 26/07/2018 05:16

I can't tell if you're serious Widdlin. Do you believe in spaghetti trees? 😂

KatieKat88 · 26/07/2018 06:17

Slightly derailing but my parents always boil mince instead of browning with oil... never realised until I went to uni that this is weird and bloody disgusting!

Downeyhouse · 26/07/2018 06:21

My Italian Nonna (granny) would be turning in her grave!

Pasta Is cooked in boiling water!

MrsSnootyPants2018 · 26/07/2018 06:23

Pasta always has some sort or sauce with it so I don't think it really matters. Sounds like you're looking for a reason to have a go at your DH

The80sweregreat · 26/07/2018 06:29

Boil water first then add pasta!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 26/07/2018 06:47

Leave the bastard. Just leave. Now. He's never going to get better

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 26/07/2018 06:55

What does he say about the cooking instructions on the packet? That the manufacturers have got it all wrong?

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 26/07/2018 06:57

Any tips on cooking filled pasta? How can you keep it under the water? It always floats to the top and I keep pushing it back under. They then burst.

CasperGutman · 26/07/2018 07:47

general rule of thumb is that if it grows above ground it goes into hot water, below ground it goes into cold water.

So... gnocchi di patate then?

MrsChollySawcutt · 26/07/2018 09:14

Boiled mince?? No, what fresh hell is this 🤮🤮

LongSummerDays · 26/07/2018 09:16

It says on the packet to put it in boiling water!

DGRossetti · 26/07/2018 09:24

Boiled mince??

DW used to do this before we met - having learned it from her DM Shock so it's clearly a "thing" from somewhere (hell ?).

To be fair, it wasn't "boiling" the mince, but pouring a kettleful of boiling water over it to "rinse the mince" (and flavour) out.

Either way it was pretty shit.
