Dh cooks pasta by putting it into a pan of cold water then putting it onto the hob. HIBU isn’t he?

I am aware that I have no moral high ground and that if I want it doing a certain way, I should just do it myself. But he’s still wrong, isn’t he?

I put it to you, MN jury...

Boil kettle. Pour boiling water onto pasta in saucepan, leaving a cupful of water in the kettle. Make tea with remaining water and cook pasta. Simple.

In my own personal hell, DH has just brought me a plate of reheated spag bol. Lovely. Except he added some left over oven chips which are now indistinguishable from the pasta Hmm

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/07/2018 20:21

I will get my ducks in a row, cancel the cheque and LTB sharpish.

Don't forget to ring 101 MadMary. This needs to be logged.

I see that your husband is Dutch - do you think he might be on glue?

pasturesgreen · 25/07/2018 20:23

Currently working away in Rome. I've been mentioning this thread to my colleagues. People actually blasphemed. Your DH is being VVVVVVVVV unreasonable and disgusting.

evilharpy · 25/07/2018 20:47

I’m an ex-chef. Professionally trained. Pasta goes in boiling salted water. Always always always. Scoop a bit of the pasta water out before draining it and use to loosen up the sauce a bit.

Root vegetables including potatoes go into cold water. Other vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, runner beans etc go into hot water otherwise they overcook and turn horrible. Nothing worse than overcooked veg.

Someone mentioned rice... Put washed rice in heavy based pan. Cover in cold water up to the first knuckle of your index finger. Bring to a simmer, cover and turn the heat down low for ten minutes. Turn off the heat and leave to steam for at least another ten minutes. Fluff up with a fork. I have no idea how you can mess up cooking rice. How else would you cook it? The boil in the bag stuff is vile and more effort having to cut the bags open.

Bluntness100 · 25/07/2018 20:50

I can easily mess up rice, probably because I boil the arse out of it. Something I shall now stop,,🤣

evilharpy · 25/07/2018 20:51

Bluntness stop that immediately. Terrible behaviour.

Bluntness100 · 25/07/2018 20:53

Yes ma'am 🤣

applespearsbears · 25/07/2018 20:55

He can have my first YABVVVVVVVVVU! Of course it's boiling water

MarshaBradyo · 25/07/2018 20:55

Interesting Evil, my mother always put potatoes in cold water

thisneverendingsummer · 25/07/2018 20:56

There are a right bunch of muppets on this thread, all piling in with insults like sheep! When they don't know what they are talking about. And loads of people who supposedly know loads of Italian people. 😂

Of COURSE you can cook pasta from cold water. (And boiling too!) So many people on here haven't got a clue what they are on about, and are piling in and copying what others are saying.

And so WHAT if I posted a link from THE SUN? You can google 'should you use cold or boiling water to cook pasta?' and every single time, it will say 'either method is OK...' Anyone who says different is a muppet! 😂

PMSL at the mumsnet sheep who pile in and call people who go against the grain, 'thick' and 'idiotic,' and say they are talking shit, and insist all their imaginary Italian friends are AGHAST at the thought of popping it into cold water to cook it.

You lot are a fucking hoot! 😂

evilharpy · 25/07/2018 21:01

Marsha general rule of thumb is that if it grows above ground it goes into hot water, below ground it goes into cold water.

Bluntness100 · 25/07/2018 21:01

Are you drunk? I've genuinely never seen anyone lose their shit and start slinging out insults over something like how to cook pasta.

Cook it in cold water if it's really important to you. Don't stress. No one is going to stop you.

Confused
BonnieF · 25/07/2018 21:11

If it’s a choice between cooking pasta the way 50m Italians do, ie al denté in boiling salted water, or cooking it the way a few English numpties with no taste buds do, I’m with the Italians.

I always just add to cold water...it’s never ever gloopy or sticky and tastes exactly the same as the few times I tried the boiling water first method so definitely not convinced it makes a difference.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/07/2018 21:38

I'm quite confused as to why it is impossible to have Italian friends. They're a friendly people. Credo que la neverendingsunmmer e un pochino pazza.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 25/07/2018 21:41

Boil kettle. Pour into pan. Add salt. Add pasta. HIBVVVVVVVU.

CardsforKittens · 25/07/2018 21:54

Credo que la neverendingsunmmer e un pochino pazza.

My Italian friend says: fuori come un balcone.

(Oh, and she also says boiling water for pasta.)

FermatsTheorem · 25/07/2018 21:57

Sorry, not normally a grammar pedant, but I've been working so hard on learning Italian I can't resist...

Credo che la neverendingsummer sia un pochino pazza.

Wink

Promise never to do that again. And your sentiment is right, even if your subjunctives aren't!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 25/07/2018 21:58

Sono un elicottero.

mumsastudent · 25/07/2018 22:04

ah what type of rice!

FermatsTheorem · 25/07/2018 22:07

Have just realised this is the ideal place to try out an Italian idiom which I was quite taken with. Re. the Sun's advice: che cavolo!

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/07/2018 22:49

And your sentiment is right, even if your subjunctives aren't!

Grin

Oooooooo hark at you.

FermatsTheorem · 25/07/2018 23:01

Twirls.

I feel like a proper mumsnetter now (it's only taken 10 years). I have become a grammar pedant. I shall go forth and purchase naice ham tomorrow, before kidnapping some random bloke so I can dunk his willy in a penis beaker.

(Seriously though, I am rubbish at languages, but have been really trying, and I'm beyond chuffed that my Italian teacher thinks I might be able to have a shot at a GCSE next year! Though also bricking it 'cos I'm a bit long in the tooth to be taking exams!)

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/07/2018 23:54

Good luck with the Italian GCSE @FermatsTheorem

I took mine about 100 years ago.
