To have just bought a 15ft pool?

I can't decide if it's a wise move or I am a complete idiot.

I've not told my DP yet but tbf we don't live together so it's only his problem when I ask him to help me put it together.

I should say I do have a garden, it's not like that Lad bible video and I'm putting it in my front room Grin

So good or bad idea?

Are you on a water meter? It will cost you a fortune to fill!
And aren't we into a hosepipe ban?

FASH84 · 24/07/2018 20:04

Do you have space for it? Was it hugely expensive? Is there a hosepipe ban in your area and are you prepared to keep it clean. If your answers are yes, no (or yes but I can easily afford it) no and yes. YANBU.

PositivelyPERF · 24/07/2018 20:04

So long as there’s no hosepipe ban, in your area and kids can’t get into it. Also be aware that cats can drown in pools, so consider using a proper cover, that’s properly secured, when it’s not in use.

FASH84 · 24/07/2018 20:05

@PositivelyPERF cats can swim they just don't like to (other than my cat, who meows for me to run a cold bath for him to play in)

Poolpurchaser · 24/07/2018 20:19

No water meter or hosepipe ban (yet!)

My garden is about 30ft x 70ft, but in 3 sections, middle one is 30 x 30 so it should fit there ok. Hopefully!

It wasn't cheap but I can afford it. Due to work commitments we're probably not going away this year so I thought it would be a nice treat.

It has a cover and we will be keeping that on when we're not using it. I was thinking about keeping out leaves but I guess it will work for cats too.

Just done the same, no ban here and gagging for a dip!

Bonkerz · 24/07/2018 20:22

We got a hot tub which has been amazing in this weather and I figure we are helping with the water shortage as using Chemicals to keep water clean and clear. It's been up 6 weeks now and only been emptied once.

Elementtree · 24/07/2018 20:24

How deep is it? Will it have little ladders to climb in? And a filter? I think it could a stroke of genius.

PositivelyPERF · 24/07/2018 20:25

FASH84 cats can drown because they can panic themselves to the point of exhaustion, if not used to water. Also, unless there is something for them to climb up, to get out, they won’t be able to get over the sides.

FASH84 · 24/07/2018 20:34

It's a 15ft pool , why do you think there's not a massive issue with dead cats in swimming pools in the many countries where proper home pools are common.. The OP has also did she had a cover. It's really a random issue to focus on

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 24/07/2018 20:36

FASH WON'T ANYONE THINK OF THE CATS??

ScrubTheDecks · 24/07/2018 21:15

In tne South of France they have an issue with wild boar getting into swimming pools. They have to call the fire brigade to get them out.

YouTheCat · 24/07/2018 21:17

Well, that'll be the end of summer then. Grin

Astrid2 · 24/07/2018 21:22

Remember if you're putting it up on grass, it'll all die underneath! Not that there's much good grass anywhere just now TBF

JessicaPeach · 24/07/2018 21:32

We’ve got a 3x2m pool, costs about £12 to fill. Get a filter, cover, chlorine tablets, ph monitor and a pool hoover/net. You can use the same water all summer if you look after it

WineAndTiramisu · 24/07/2018 21:34

Sounds a great buy, am very jealous!

And yes, cats do drown, we unfortunately had one drown in our pond during house renovations (had snowed then melted so fibreglass pond only half full, so no way out), was very sad for the poor neighbour whose cat it was

Laiste · 24/07/2018 21:54

Oh god if it's on grass the grass wont just die under it ... it will turn into a hideous stinking slimy mess which will shock and revolt you when you take the pool away again. It will remain a dead barren site for apx a year The smell was indescribable.

The other things we didn't think about when we bought a big pool on a whim a few years ago was -

  • water from the hose is freezing cold. For ages. And ages. Heater? Back to the shop ...
  • water left for a while needs some kind of treatment to stop it going manky. Back to the shop ...
  • water exposed for a day even while everyone's in it gets all kinds of bits in it blown in on the breeze and these need fishing out or a filter. Sieve? Back to the shop ...
  • the bit of your garden which you think is level probably isn't and you'll have a shallow end/deep end which you can't do anything about once you notice because it'll be too heavy to move by then.

I share my experience in order to help, not piss on chips Grin

MoonsAndJunes · 24/07/2018 22:14

God yes, get it filled before your area has a hosepipe ban.
Get pool chemicals to stop it going slimy & use the cover to stop debris falling in it.

As for the cat issue Hmm I'm sure the chances of a random cat drowning in your covered pool is quite slim.

PestoSurfissimos · 24/07/2018 22:19

Have you got a pump & a filter?

Poodletip · 24/07/2018 22:26

I just got a chlorine floater thingy for our pool so we don't have to keep refilling it. Enjoy!

JustLikeBefore · 24/07/2018 22:26

we found a dead squirrel in ours the other week Sad

edwinbear · 24/07/2018 22:28

We have one that’s about 12ft. We live in London so it takes up most of our postage stamp garden but we bloody love it (although what Laiste says is all true Grin)

Especially the bit about a level garden. DH and I were enjoying a late night glass of wine one balmy summers night, congratulating ourselves on our purchase when the side of the pool suddenly collapsed. I am not exaggerating to say it was akin to the Thames flood barrier unexpectedly opening.

Also, it takes about 8 hrs to fill so make sure you start filling it up in the morning or you will be there until 1am 😁

detdet · 24/07/2018 22:29

I just had to explain why I laughed loudly at the cat hysteria to my husband.

Please be mindful I am NOT laughing at dead cats, but just that it's become the main focus of the thread.

It reminds me of the hydrogen balloon thread ages ago.

MotoringCautiouslyOnward · 24/07/2018 22:35

This thread is hilarious Grin

The cat concern and Thames flood barrier failure Grin

Are these pools you all have in your gardens deep enough to swim properly in? I can't get my head round that when I think of gardens near me!

Poolpurchaser · 24/07/2018 23:30

I've got a pump, filter, cover, ladder and a heater.

Our grass is non existent already, we had loads of bald patches in our lawn anyway and earlier in the year I was considering getting new turf laid - thankfully I didn't get round to it!

Now I just have to break it to DP that he's going to be spending his Weds afternoon putting a pool together Blush
