DH not wanting to go away on holiday

holepunch88 · 23/07/2018 12:17

My DH likes to go walking in places like the lake district, Snowdonia etc. I do too, and very happy to go for long weekends at any time of year, and we have even spent Xmas up mountains!
But, I don't see that as a 'main' holiday.
I want to see a bit more of the world.
the Uk is lovely, don't get me wrong, especially with the fab weather we have been having.
So, I have suggested we do up to a week in the lakes, camping (he loves it, I don't particularly) with the dog, go walking etc, but then do a week somewhere else, I fancy Rome, or Venice, or Prague...something like that?
I don't particularly like beaches, but a nice hotel, with a pool to cool off, interesting architechture, culture, history etc.
He always says he doesn't want to go...'I don't want to fly, it takes too long sitting about airports/its boring on a plane/its too hot everywhere/any other excuse!
TBH, it is getting boring now, all his excuses.
What makes it so annoying though is he is happy to go skiing with his mates every January (I can't get time off work to go with him), and when he was with his ex, he went to Turkey, Egypt, Greece, Corfu, Italy....all places I would love to go but he claims are too hot and the flight is too long!!!
AIBU in expecting him to compromise - I go to Lakes, he comes on a hotel holiday with me?

You imply that you do the lion's share of the work when you go camping or caravanning. I think you have to make him do ALL the work for a trip or two and then he might be more drawn to hotels.

Definitely he shouldn't go on any more skiing trips until he's gone somewhere off your wish list with you.

The Italian lakes might be a good compromise - you can spend a few days sightseeing the towns and nearby cities (e.g. Milan from Lake Como and Verona from Lake Garda etc) and a few days hiking in the mountains round the lake.

I want a hotel - someone else makes the bed, does the cooking and cleaning!

Who does it when you go away in the caravan? You?! Then stop! Tell him that you want everything done for you, and if he won't go away with you, then you expect HIM to do it all for you. And stick to it - and if he doesn't do anything, take yourself off to a local B&B and join him every day after you've had a leisurely breakfast.

I met a Canadian woman on a short trip to Salisbury a few years ago who got fed-up with not going abroad...so filled up the freezer, left him in front of the telly and flew 1000s of miles to see Stonehenge and tramp the Downs...and was having a great time!

I have the same issue. Dh refuses to come on holiday as he says it’s boring. Happily trots off with his mates 2 or 3 times a year for ski and cycling holidays.

I used to go on holiday without dd but when she was younger it was hard work on my own, brief period where it worked well, then as a teenager she didn’t want to come away. I never felt that I would enjoy a holiday abroad on my own to be honest. I’ve done some hill walking holidays in the U.K. on my own which I enjoyed but have my own caravan....I wouldn’t want to be in a hotel or even apartment on my own.

Have started talking to some friends about going on holiday next year with them. But yes I’m pissed off that dh doesn’t want to/won’t do it even if he’s not keen/is so selfish.

Perhaps the ladies of this thread should organise something, like an AirbnB apartment, somewhere in Europe and meet up?

frasier · 24/07/2018 18:16

Go without him.

I had a boyfriend who was like that, was a bit scared of travelling I think even though he was stationed overseas (but every need looked after by the company). So I went on my own, travelled the world, met my now DH and now we travel the world with DS in tow.

Not suggesting you leave him by the way!

Life’s too short to not live it though.

Go on a cruise! I've done a couple from Southampton that went to Rome, Florence, Lisbon, Barcelona etc. No flying, fabulous service, no worrying about cooking or washing up etc. And not always that expensive compared to other types of holidays.

holepunch88 · 25/07/2018 09:59

Success! Have managed to persuade him on a short trip next month to Krakow.
Flights booked, hotel booked with a pool in case it is hot. Lots to see and do. Only 3 days, and 2.5 hour flight. He should manage that.

He has done cruises with ex too....I suggested we do that... but he complained that the excursions were too expensive. I think his main problem with any holiday is the cost! He is a tight Yorkshire man - short arms and deep pockets. In his words " walking is free".

Anyway, I got my way, and will take the caravan suggestions on board - he can make up the bed every night and pack it away, and do all the chores!

Yes cruise excursions can be expensive if you book via the cruise company. It's what I usually do as I like the security of it, but you can book independent excursions that are much cheaper, or just go it alone, lots of people do that. Not all cruise ports need excursions, sometimes we just get off the ship and have a wander.

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 25/07/2018 10:27

Glad you're getting away though, enjoy Krakow.

Also, skiing isn't cheap, is it? So don't be too quick to excuse him on those grounds. I suspect that (as with many people) something isn't expensive if it's the thing he really wants to do.
One possible approach for the future would be to suggest that whatever the budget is for his skiing trips, a matching budget is set aside for a holiday you both agree on and that you'll enjoy.

Somewhere in Europe by train? I second Prague, fascinating and beautiful place.

All the train information you need in one place - The Man in Seat 61.
