Can’t buy anything now days with out it being made of polyester. Especially the textured crepe like material really hate it. Feels all scratchy sweaty and looks cheap

You've got a good TKMaxx. The one in my city centre is like a rummage sale in cold war Bulgaria

Haha.

That said I bought the most amazing cardigan/jacket in my local TKMaxx today. Unbeliveable price. Worth a visit once a month - fashionata advice.

NotSoFastCuckoo · 24/07/2018 18:14

but yeah, polyester everywhere, it never feels the same.

I'd give my right arm for some soft, fine cotton joggers or leggings or vest-tops.

But I think it would be expensive! Still worth it to have a few things of great material and style. Rather than lots of tat.

Clionba · 24/07/2018 18:17

Lucky you, Cuckoo! Honestly, it's shite. My husband has got some items from the menswear bit, but I don't know why the women's section is so bad. Nasty polyester floral trousers, lurex tops, halter neck maxis in livid shades and dreadful shoes. All presented as if the staff were caught out by an emergency fire drill.

Jozxyqk · 24/07/2018 18:18

ThreeWheeler - thanks. TBH it's sitting on my desk by the bedroom window ATM, gathering dust as I've not been well. I'm still knitting though, I can practically do that in my sleep. Wore one of the TK Maxx tops yesterday... love it!

Waterlemon · 24/07/2018 18:23

Yes I’m the same!
I actually manage to find nice cotton tops in Sainsbury’s quite often.

I have a few dressses from here - expensive but they are fully lined, fantastic quality and they have POCKETS! Emily and Finn

Finding decent, well cut, high leg cotton knickers is my dream! Like what M&S sold about 10 years ago!

Skittlesandbeer · 24/07/2018 18:25

When I was preggers (in 2010) I developed super smell powers. It really hit me how strongly chemical certain clothes shops were. I actually couldn’t enter many of them. I’ve never forgotten which shops they were, 8 years after my superpower left me. No way am I buying synthetic tat again. I’m even really careful to wash anything new before wearing it, even natural fibres.

I’ve been driven faaar from the high st clothes shops in recent years. ETSY, EBay, and designer recycle shops rule. Good quality, hard wearing fabrics. Wool, silk, cotton, linen. And I never iron anything- can’t tell you where my iron even is! I steam things very occasionally, but mostly hanging it to dry very carefully does the trick.

I commiserate with you, OP.

kaldefotter · 24/07/2018 21:42

@notsofastcuckoo Decathlon do nice organic cotton (and elastane) joggers that are thin rather than bulky.

I just want some comfy work dresses much prefer winter cloths at the moment only problem I have is that I can’t do wool of any percentage not even cashmere really sucks when it comes to jumpers

Pythone · 25/07/2018 08:20

Brora do nice cotton and linen, although it can be expensive.

Waterlemon · 25/07/2018 12:14

For jumpers and cardigans I wear cotton or cotton blends. I have a few from gap, Sainsbury’s and monsoon mostly.

Shampooeeee · 25/07/2018 12:22

YANBU even high end brands are at it.
It drives me mad.
Polyester is gross and always looks cheap.
The environmental impact is huge. The same people wanking on about plastic bottles, etc can often be found dressed head to toe in polyester.

welshmist · 25/07/2018 12:34

I am sitting here in a cotton teeshirt from Primark, I bought four this summer, I love the flamingoes. Then on top a boyfriend shirt from JD Williams or whatever incarnation it was at the time, sadly my cotton trousers are from the defunct BHS. ditto cotton knickers.

Eddierussett · 25/07/2018 13:27

For outdoorwear style t-shirts and jumpers there is a company based on the isle of Wight called Rapanui who do all cotton or bamboo tops and I think they donate to marine charities. Not any good for work wear though.

Seasalt do cotton clothes.

I like 50s style dresses and get annoyed how many of those have synthetic materials. There's a small company I use called Aspire style who stock a range of 50s style brands - definitely not the cheapest! but they normally have some that are 100% cotton.

Oldraver · 25/07/2018 13:30

I'm currently rotating a couple of Linen mix dresses from Asda

Yes a lot of shops are full of polyester but even the supermarkets now are doing cottons/ linens

welshmist · 25/07/2018 13:32

lol I have a seasalt dress in linen, which needs ironing again!! linen drives me nuts. Cotton is more forgiving.

SuburbanRhonda · 25/07/2018 13:42

Viscose was invented as a cheaper alternative to silk (it used to be called “viscose rayon”).

It’s basically mashed up cotton that’s extruded into fibres that look and feel a little little silk. That’s why it creases so much. So it’s man-made from a natural fibre. I love it, especially when it’s very lightweight.

Polyester has come a long way since the days of Crimplene. I don’t find it sweaty at all, especially the lightweight fabrics, and it washes and dries very quickly. Environmentally it’s not great, but then neither is cotton, with the massive amounts of water needed for its manufacture.

PowerPantsRule · 25/07/2018 13:45

Each to his own - I love polyester! Doesn't crease, decent ones look like silk. They don't make me sweat - I think the trick is buying mid-range clothes like Boden and Reiss - polyester in New Look is not the same.

woodhill · 25/07/2018 13:47

I hate polyester and will not buy it especially in tops. Viscose is better but I always look out for cotton

I find linen makes me sweaty

MixedBouquet · 25/07/2018 14:07

viscose often makes me a bit sweaty and stinky - I'm not sure why if its just 'mashed up cotton'. maybe its not absorbent enough?

MixedBouquet · 25/07/2018 14:08

kalde those Decathalon bottoms look amazing!

MinkyWinky · 25/07/2018 14:27

Thank goodness it's not just me. I always seem to smell by the end of the day if I wear artificial fabrics.

Natural fabric clothes are getting harder to find. Boden, Pure, Fat Face and White Stuff usually have some!

Honflyr · 25/07/2018 14:32

I love it. Because it's cheap.

gendercritter · 25/07/2018 15:22

I hate it too op. I only buy natural fabrics, and 2nd hand at that. Polyester is just vile although I appreciate you can get nicer versions of it these days.

Fabricwitch · 25/07/2018 15:27

YANBU
I'm 26, I hate it and it gives me a rash!!
I got some nice linen and cotton stuff from ASOS, Forever 21, Next and H&M this year. I just search "linen" in the search bar, but do check incase it's mixed with something else.

Fabricwitch · 25/07/2018 15:31

MixedBouquet viscose is mashed up tree pulp, not cotton! I don't have a problem with it myself, especially bamboo.
