To hate all the polyester crap out there

Can’t buy anything now days with out it being made of polyester. Especially the textured crepe like material really hate it. Feels all scratchy sweaty and looks cheap

Where is still bad for this? Odd that H&M is mentioned as good as that's the place I find worst for 'oh that's nice'... 'oh it's viscose'.

I always look at fabric first before ordering stuff, and in person you can usually tell from the feel.

Was annoyed recently by a nice Lindybop cotton dress (first thing I'd bought from them) that turned out to have a synthetic lining that looked like it would be static central with tights or stockings.

1moreglassplease · 23/07/2018 12:22

I've managed to track down some nice cotton dresses for work from Next, Debenhams and Monsoon this year. I'd recommend the Woolovers sale page for some nice linen/cotton tops too.

There is stuff out there but it's a real pita trying to find it a lot of the time and I end up in stores squinting to read labels without my glasses, trying to work out what things are made of.

QuestionableMouse · 23/07/2018 12:23

Yours do 100% cotton trousers. They're really comfortable and cool.

I'm trying to find decent work trousers that aren't plastic. Bought some 100% cotton ones from ASOS and they're not the most comfortable.

Ariela · 23/07/2018 12:26

Worse is the websites that fail to list fabric content!

bonzo77 · 23/07/2018 12:30

Viscose is natural synthetic fibre. It’s made from processed cellulose. It can be lovely and cool. It also hangs well so can long ok great.

I too am fed up of polyester and acrylic. Both look and feel horrid. Acrylic jumpers don’t even keep you warm. Exception might be polyester fleece which (ssshhhhh) has its place IMO.

Interestingly, or not, much easier to find 100% cotton for men.

Increasingly I am making my own. Tops, t shirts, dresses especially. I’ve just made my self a simple viscose tank dress, and a less simple viscose Lycra one. Really comfy, and look nice, though the basic one is definitely for casual only. Total cost for the fabrics was probably about £15.

pennycarbonara · 23/07/2018 12:42

Cheap viscose can feel terrible and bobble easily. There are a lot of places using it more because it was superficially thought to be more sustainable than cotton, but in practice isn't. (There were quite a few reports last year on a study showing why it wasn't.)

I buy second hand when I can but still avoid viscose most of the time because of the feel. I find it especially noticeable in hot weather like this. There are some viscose things that feel very similar to cotton but they are generally expensive, e.g. a Hobbs jersey wrap dress I used to have.

Threewheeler1 · 23/07/2018 12:43

I don't know what's happened to 'fashion' anymore.
Everything looks so unflattering, cheap and nasty.
Fabric that looks as if it'd self-combust near a lightbulb, minging patterns and colours, frills, slits and ties, weird shaped sleeves designed to get stuck on every passing door handle and scoop up a pool sized amount of water near a sink...
I have no idea where to go anymore. Just the act of looking at most of the clothes available brings me out in a peri-menopausal sweat so I've given up.
Bought some washed linen in really lovely colours and plan to make my own stuff from now on Grin

NewYear2018 · 23/07/2018 12:44

Absolutely agree. Can't stand the sweaty stuff on my skin.

I can't afford to buy new so buy good condition/used off eBay.
Brands like Noa Noa, Hobbs, Gudrun Sjoden, Toast, Sandwich, Flax (US brand) .

Polyester bedlinen and duvets are the schvitz-pits too. I have invested in a new wool duvet - it is sweat-free even in this hot weather. wool duvet, pillows link

bonzo77 · 23/07/2018 14:18

Oh yes to the wool duvet. Had one in Australia and it was ok even in 40deg summers and no air con.

lidoshuffle · 23/07/2018 14:26

When you walk into Next now, the smell of plastic clothes and plastic shoes really hits you.

stargirl1701 · 23/07/2018 14:28

It's horrifying for the planet too. Thousands of micro plastic particles released into the water system every single time you wash it.

blackteasplease · 23/07/2018 14:45

I agree but make an exception for Viscose

Jozxyqk · 23/07/2018 16:34

I am also making my own - or at least, starting to. I've been a knitter for nearly 20 years, & have dug out my sewing machine. I'm starting with simple stuff, & things for DD.

I hate polyester too. Dd has a lot and it's all slippery and sweaty.

I haven't had any problems finding cotton clothes. Bon prix is good for linen/cotton mix trousers and shorts. I've got all the colours. The white ones are so soft and comfy.

I got some nice thin cotton vest tops from Matalan. H&M have lovely thin cotton tops too. Sainsbury's is usually good too.

Our bedding is all 100% cotton from Ikea but I've seen some nice sets in Matalan. We have taken the duvets out and just sleep with the covers.

smashyourglasses · 23/07/2018 17:27

What shop was the dress in, HarrietKettleWasHere?

MikeUniformMike · 23/07/2018 17:31

I'm curious about the sports kit too.
I have it and one good thing about it is that it dries quickly but mine hums unless I disinfect it every now and then. You shouldn't use 2-in-1 or fabric conditioner when you wash it.
The polyester fashion stuff I leave well alone.

Threewheeler1 · 23/07/2018 17:33

Jozxyqk
Fellow knitter here Smile Just wanted to share that!
Good luck with the clothes!

HarrietKettleWasHere · 23/07/2018 18:20

Smashy it was Nougart (in House of Fraser)

Trying to find something to wear to a wedding and all the Tes Baker dresses were 100% polyester at pretty much the same price as that, too.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 23/07/2018 18:20

TED Baker obviously!

smashyourglasses · 23/07/2018 20:15

I've just looked at them on the HOF site, the
Nougat dresses are all reduced so you could get it at sale price.. doesn't help with the material though!

HarrietKettleWasHere · 23/07/2018 21:36

Smashy there's some serious reductions on there Shock

I'd have been gutted to pay full price!

Paddington23 · 24/07/2018 16:09

Went to to max and nothing I could find that was decent

OP posts:
Clionba · 24/07/2018 16:46

I agree with all of you, I'm struggling to find decent, stylish clothes in natural fibres. Why is it so difficult? I don't mind paying! I tried on a skirt in Jigsaw that was £98 but the man made fabric was awful.
I don't want to wear those cold shoulder tops or Bardot tops, either!

Paddington23 · 24/07/2018 18:04

Only one I like is joules but it’s all a bit floral for me at my age
