About the heatwave

I live in the south east. I can't remember when I last saw rain but the air is continually humid and oppressive. I can't remember when I last slept due to it and now find myself waking at night panicking due to the lack of air despite having fans on the go all the time. I'm worried that if this heatwave goes on much longer I will break down and am seriously considering leaving the country- but to where? It seems most of the globe is like this at the moment with freak weather events happening, Europe is mostly like the UK and not improving.

I don't know if it's because I'm heavily pregnant in feeling like this - overwhelmed and panicky- or if any non pregnant types are. It's just too much now.

In Australia, when a colleague announces a pregnancy, there's always a " great, you'll be huge in the cool months" or " Ouch! late pregnancy in January/February."

The heat is trying indeed.

So much sympathy - I gave birth a week and a half ago, and while I normally love sun and heat I was absolutely miserable in late pregnancy in this weather (also in SE). I think some of the people giving you unsympathetic comments have never been heavily pregnant in a heat wave - it's completely different to the same weather not pregnant. On that front, and on the plus side, I have felt 100% better since having the baby! Hope that one way or another - baby coming or weather breaking! - it's over for you soon.

Could you book into a hotel with air conditioning?

I totally love the MN answer to everything is to book into a hotel Grin

Had a blazing row with the DH? Book into a hotel and charge it to his credit card

Feeling generally fed up? Book into a hotel aaaand have a spa day.

Heat getting to you? Book into a hotel and stick the aircon to Max!

Love it!!

YANBU I wanted to bloody murder everyone on the train today. Woman chewing chewing gum with your mouth open (you get off at Staplehurst) you have been warned!

daisychain01 · 23/07/2018 22:43

Flowers Leslie it is very difficult indeed for people with health problems and vulnerable people (small babies, elderly people). I haven't slept for weeks, but I can't grumble as I can sit in front of my desk fan at work and use their eleccy Smile

If one more person sneers that 'it's not even that hot' I'm going to fucking scream. Yes it IS that fucking hot. Just because you don't find it that hot, doesn't mean that the rest of the population is governed by your preferences. Plenty are suffering, MN is full of people suffering. So fabulous, if you enjoy the heat then crack on. But leave the fuck off telling other people how hot they are.

Mammalamb · 23/07/2018 22:58

Too many!!! We are in Dundee too! It’s not too hot here at all

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 23/07/2018 23:02

Numerically, it isn't all that hot. (Am in central Europe and you can add on about 5 degrees to the current UK max temps to get an idea of what we are having). There are two factors making it seem unbearable - the fact that Britain is not set up for prolonged heat either infastructurally or psychologically, and that 'prolonged' bit. British people are used to variable weather.

The solution....

When we had a spate of shit summers everyone, amongst their moaning about the rain, said that was to do with climate change as well.

I'm not saying climate change isn't an issue at all, but I'm not sure that this heatwave, which does happen in the UK every now and then, is necessarily the sign of an apocalypse.

I do think part of the problem is that the UK just isn't set up of anything outside of our very temperate climate. So nothing for when it very hot, cold, snowy or rainy. So we find it tricky to cope with anything that isn't overcast and slightly drizzly.

Fionz · 28/07/2018 03:52

I agree with hangingaround. We love this weather abroad, but most places abroad have air conditioning inside, we don't!! That's the problem. I gave birth 5 weeks ago and my baby is really struggling with the heat. I am in Edinburgh and today was above 30 degrees, right now the bedroom is 26 degrees and I am still awake trying to cool down my baby enough so she can fall asleep comfortably (not looking good lol...long night for me). It rained tonight but it didn't bring down the temperature that much, my bedroom windows are open wide and have 2 fans blowing... never thought I'd say this but I am looking forward to October 😞 x
