About the heatwave

MeltingPregnantLady · 22/07/2018 22:06

I live in the south east. I can't remember when I last saw rain but the air is continually humid and oppressive. I can't remember when I last slept due to it and now find myself waking at night panicking due to the lack of air despite having fans on the go all the time. I'm worried that if this heatwave goes on much longer I will break down and am seriously considering leaving the country- but to where? It seems most of the globe is like this at the moment with freak weather events happening, Europe is mostly like the UK and not improving.

I don't know if it's because I'm heavily pregnant in feeling like this - overwhelmed and panicky- or if any non pregnant types are. It's just too much now.

OP posts:

Mogle not everyone hates this. I don't. Actuallykidding made a suggestion of an aircon unit herself, that's not being smug.

OP, I have lots of sympathy for you because being pregnant in this weather must be very hard to cope with, no suggestions really apart what others have said.

RedDwarves · 22/07/2018 22:45

Its winter in Australia and the entire Southern Hemisphere so you have plenty of options.

Yeah, not sure Australia ticks the OP's boxes. It's the middle of winter and will be in the low 20s today in Sydney. Haven't had decent rain since March last year, and no rain in sight.

CocoaGin70 · 22/07/2018 22:48

We're in Gloucestershire and it's grim. No breeze or air - just this oppressive heat. Day after day. DH and I work together and he hates having a fan on in the office as it blows stuff about - cue a massive meltdown from me on Friday. I said no one messes with a perimenopausal woman that has no fucking thermostat as it is. I'm permanently close to passing out, and the palpitations I'm having aren't helping my temper remotely. Can I have a lift to Scotland please Grin

Blostma · 22/07/2018 22:49

We’re heading to the lakes at the weekend. Blissful low to mid twenties, and proper temperature drops in the evening. It is still 28 degrees here according to our thermometer. Our poor dog is hating it.

bitmynailbrokemytooth · 22/07/2018 22:51

Does Scotland not have biting midges ? I'd sooner be hot than eaten alive ( biting things love me, I must taste like their equivalent of cheesecake )

Marbles321 · 22/07/2018 22:51

OP I feel you - I'm 38 weeks pregnant in London and absolutely melting. Cannot get comfortable and am too scared to go too far from home at this late stage so am stuck in the concrete jungle trying to get some rest in this ridiculous heat!
I am usually very much a summer person and love warm weather but its a completely different experience when you're heavily pregnant and cannot cool down.

SabineUndine · 22/07/2018 22:52

OP are you sure you haven’t got asthma? What you describe is how I feel when my asthma is triggered.

Fernanie · 22/07/2018 22:53

Imagine if all the people who like the sun and warmth complained every time we had a few weeks of drizzle or cold in the UK Confused We normally have 350 days of shitty weather and 2 weeks of sunshine. Now we're finally getting a proper summer, and the people who aren't enjoying it can't stop moaning! Those of us who do enjoy summery weather don't continuously moan when the weather's doing something we don't like.
It's a good few years since I was last pregnant so maybe I'm looking back through rose-tinted glasses, but I was in Louisiana where it's regularly above 100°F (37°C?) and humid in the summer. It was uncomfortable; it was not worth emigrating over. Get one of those handheld misting fans, or put your existing fan in front of an open window, with a tray of ice cubes in front of it.

LaPufalina · 22/07/2018 22:53

OP, you poor thing. I'm 33 weeks and was struggling but we've had a bit of rain in Manchester the last few days and it's made it so much more bearable, even wore a coat out for a walk this morning (waddle).
It's only two hours ten on the (air conditioned) train!

RaininSummer · 22/07/2018 22:54

In the South West here. It has been beautifully sunny for weeks but only about 23 degrees in the house most days which I find just right. Must be hell if heavily pregnant though. Maybe a trip to the Devon or Cornwall coast OP as nearer than scotland.

AJPTaylor · 22/07/2018 22:54

can you go to the coast? we are in east sussex and whilst it is hot and no rain i think the sea breeze makes a difference

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/07/2018 22:54

It is hot and it is a very remarkable summer. The coming two weeks look like it's going to be very challenging in the south east for many.

The NW is going to be the most comfy place.

Other than that, it's paddling pools, fans, indoor shopping centres and lots of fluids. Also, pillows in the freezer, cold water bottles and just try and remind yourself that the oxygen content is still the same, so there is air, even when it feels stuffy.

Branleuse · 22/07/2018 22:55

im south east too, and I think the humidity has been particularly high today. Its supposed to be even hotter tommorow but less humid.

Its 12 degrees and rainy in reykjavik, and only 19 degrees in glasgow. Maybe you could take a few days away

ThinkingCat · 22/07/2018 22:55

The heat makes a lot of us feel ill. I doubt some drizzle makes anyone feel ill.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/07/2018 22:56

Fernanie I expect you had air conditioning.

LittleBirdBlues · 22/07/2018 22:56

I'm 40 weeks pregnant and I haven't slept properly in weeks. Tonight is particularly humid and there is just no air in the room.

Please wish me that my baby comes tonight. Ive had enough!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/07/2018 22:57

Hang in there LittleBird.

RedDwarves · 22/07/2018 23:00

I expect you had air conditioning.

Not the same poster, but it's not unusual for people not to have air con here in Australia. We have some of the highest (if not the highest) gas and electricity prices in the world. Air con is simply unaffordable for many. Most will prioritise heating over air conditioning, as air conditioning uses more energy and therefore costs more to run.

So, yes, we just get on with it when we have 40+ stretches for weeks on end. That's life.

Another one stuck in SE here. Could have cried when I saw 31 on a couple of days next week. Have told in laws in Scotland I want to occupy their spare room until this goes away 😁. In all seriousness, if not for work I would have been up there for a break!

Teaandbiscuits35 · 22/07/2018 23:01

Have you tried a cooling gel? I used it when I was pregnant in the summer and it was my saviour.
I’m a summer person, love the heat. But this weather is stuffy, humid and uncomfortable. If I could spend all day in a pool it might be a different story. I’m not even pregnant.

areyouactuallykidding · 22/07/2018 23:04

It fucking is that hot. It's the hottest summer on record since 1976. Don't be a smug arse at someone who's suffering @areyouactuallykidding, how is that helpful?!

I’m not being smug - I don’t like hot weather either. In the grand scheme of weather though it’s not too bad, we can always cope in the U.K. with a fan or portable air con.

73kittycat73 · 22/07/2018 23:05

Those of us who do enjoy summery weather don't continuously moan when the weather's doing something we don't like.

Yes. They do.

UpstartCrow · 22/07/2018 23:08

My air con is me with wet hair hogging the fan.

ToeToToe · 22/07/2018 23:09

Being pregnant in a heatwave like this must be almost incapacitating, I think.

You need to go back up north, OP. SE is the place where the heatwave has been relentless.

And in the meantime, look up climate change. This is just the beginning - and you want your children to live too, yes? The effect of climate change in relation to this heatwave has been one of the most under-reported things of all under-reported thing ever. This is it. This is climate change.
