To wonder if I need to pull 50 hour weeks to earn above 23k?

Im looking at moving up the next pay grade at work, starting point is 23k for a 37.5 hour week.
Except I know ( as it's internal) that it's expected to be 50 hours with no pay for over time.

I'm a single parent and it's out of the question that i could manage that on a regular basis. And besides that i just don't want to.

So, if I want to earn above this wage is this something I need to just suck up or is it just my workplace ( nhs)

Depends on the type of job as well as the employer. I dont know if your job could be transferred from the nhs to another employer?

Emma145 · 22/07/2018 20:26

I earn 27k and do 40 hours a week I work in the private sector though in the east Midlands . I rarely do overtime. I suppose it depends on what kind of job it is but 50 hours a week is a lot for 23k!

peachypetite · 22/07/2018 20:27

I would suggest you look for other type jobs where you'll be able to leave on time every day.

flytry · 22/07/2018 20:30

It really depends on what you do, what your role is and what area you work in. I also work in the NHS and earn that salary for 18.75 hours/week, and I rarely ever work over my hours.

Quiddichcup · 22/07/2018 20:33

It's in operations.

So operational co- ordinator.

My brain thinks I'll be 100 pounds a month better off for working 2.5 hours more a day, when I already work full time. I'm not sure it makes sense but I want to progress my career and earn more.

Perhaps it's time to leave the NHS.

Not all NHS employers are like that. Other than the management training scheme I've never known anyone under band 6 expected to do unpaid overtime and then not to that extent. A couple of the places I worked actively discouraged working more than your hours. I think 50 hours for £23k is unreasonable. Agenda for change states overtime is paid up to 6 or 7 (can't remember which). Essentially that increase in hours means a massive pay cut. About £1 an hour over minimum wage.

If you have transferable skills you can find better hours for that money

MsVestibule · 22/07/2018 20:34

What will happen if you take the job but refuse to do the 50 hours?

SunnySomer · 22/07/2018 20:34

I work in a different part of the public sector and earn quite a bit more than that for 37.5 hours and a v flexible approach to work. Do you have transferable skills?

BakedBeans47 · 22/07/2018 20:35

I wouldn’t be working 50 hours a week for £23k

dementedma · 22/07/2018 20:39

i also think expecting 50 hours a week for 23K is not acceptable. f you do extra hours, you should be remunerated for them

Quiddichcup · 22/07/2018 20:43

I've got lots of transferable skills.
I don't mind a bit of over time when it's a really needed, or in a crisis, but it's not something I want to do regularly.

My DH is a band 6 in a CCG and does a 37.5hr working week. His job is more administrative than operational and he works full on when he is there but he doesn't do overtime.

VladmirsPoutine · 22/07/2018 21:47

I wouldn't do 50 hours for 23k whatever the job.

XiCi · 22/07/2018 21:49

50hrs per week for 23k is fucking outrageous. You should not be expected to work those hours for no extra pay.

Chocolatepeanuts · 22/07/2018 22:19

Like a PP said what would happen if you refused once you had the job? Im NHS and my manager has to beg us to do paid overtime never mind unpaid.

Marmablade · 22/07/2018 22:21

28.5 hours
£29k salary (prorated from FTE)
Public sector

No you don't.

areyouactuallykidding · 22/07/2018 22:31

No it’s not inevitable. I work 28 hours a week and earn £55k.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 22/07/2018 22:35

Do you want to stay in the NHS? My 20 year old ds earns £23k for a 37.5 hours week in the Local Authority. He never does over his hours. Expectng a 50 hour week in return for £23k is ridiculous and exploitative.

Elledouble · 22/07/2018 22:42

Generally as wages get higher you’re expected to put a bit of extra graft in when it’s absolutely necessary but £23k for a standard 50hrs/week is awful. Start having a look outside the NHS, the pensions are pants but the pay and conditions can be better!

JustVent · 22/07/2018 22:51

No way. I would never work that many hours for that much pay.

categed · 22/07/2018 22:51

I work (officially) 21.5h (actually) nearer 35h for just under £22000 so yes there are jobs and maybe time for a change for you.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 22/07/2018 23:25

I recently had a payrise from £25-£37k a year and my working week is 35 hours. No way would I be doing 50 hours for £23. Just no way.

I do ‘unpaid’ overtime now but I’d say maybe an extra 5 hours a week? If that? And it’s not all the time, it’s business needs, so I’m actually ok doing it and knocking off earlier in the slower periods.

NT53NJT · 22/07/2018 23:35

My boss cried when I asked for a £3k pay rise and gave me only £1k so you did very well getting £12k lol.

Johnnyfinland · 22/07/2018 23:42

Christ no! I earn considerably more than that and work 37.5 hours a week. I don’t want to say how much because this isn’t a stealth boast but that’s ridiculous, I’d look for a new job

RedBlu · 22/07/2018 23:43

Nope, that amount of hours for that pay is bad. If they expect people to work those hours, they need to pay for the overtime worked or pay a salary that covers working those hours.

I work 30-35 hours a week and earn £28k. A lot of people I work with do 50+ hours a week but they earn like £50k plus and it's sort of expected of them to put those sort of hours in.

For £23k I would expect to work between 35-40 hours a week and no more
