To think my breasts will get smaller as I lose weight?

Really this is a question for people who were/are significantly overweight/obese, and have lost weight, but I’d love to hear from those that have lost weight at all and have experience with this.

Basically someone I know has been approved for a breast reduction on the NHS. She’s overweight at the moment, I’m not sure by how much though. It got me thinking though. I’m unhappy with my breasts for similar reasons to her (backache, feel uncomfortable, get recurring skin infections, gross I know). But as I have just started to lose weight I wouldn’t even consider reduction surgery without first getting down to a healthy BMI. My thought has always been that some of it is definitely fat from eating too much. Definitely not all as I grew breasts from 10 years old and by 14 was a DD Cup, but I definitely think a significant amount is fat that will go if I lose enough weight.

AIBU to think that my breasts will reduce or does it not work like that?

(Please note I’m not criticising the acquaintance, part of me is very very jealous of her, and you gotta do what you gotta do! It’s more just about maybe I have unrealistic expectations of how my body will change).

I’ve got just over 5 stone to lose and am half way there (hurrah!) and so far, most of the weight loss has been from my tummy/bum - a bit from my boobs but not much so far - they’re huge, always have been and my greatest wish is that at the end of the weight loss they will be gone! Grin. They’re about a 36H (still...) and as the rest of me shrinks I really hope they start disappearing - but sadly I think my overall frame of big at the top and smaller everywhere else might just never go.... Hmm.

Silvertap · 22/07/2018 19:34

Pre weight loss I was a 40f.

5 stone later I'm a 32d.

stayhomeclub · 22/07/2018 19:35

I think I can vary, I was quite overweight and when I lost weight my breath reduced in size, the proportion broadly with the rest of me.

However my sister did the same and hers did not so she had reduction surgery at that point.

Not sure it is that predicatable though!

stayhomeclub · 22/07/2018 19:36

Breasts rather than breath!

Pre Weight loss 40f

Post weight loss 32f

I actually cried when the very nice lady doing the bra fitting told me . All that weight loss & my boobs were still bigger than Katie Price's.

Weight loss doesn't always guarantee smaller boobs

PaulRuddislush · 22/07/2018 19:38

It depends how much is breast tissue and how much is fat. I weighed 9st and had 36JJ breasts, weight loss was irrelevant so i got a reduction

Ezzie29 · 22/07/2018 19:38

I am a 36h. This time last year I was a size 20 and have now lost 3 stone and am a size 16. Still a 36h technically but all the volume is gone and they’re just totally flat. With a good bra they look fine but otherwise they are just flat unless it’s cold and then they look reasonably perky! I was hoping they would just get smaller with the rest of me whilst still having volume but it was not to be. I’ve still got some weight to lose but would consider surgery once I’m done, I’ll see how I feel.

bridgetreilly · 22/07/2018 19:39

If you lose a lot, then yes, it will have an effect on your breasts, though likely to be more band size than cup size.

Nomorechickens · 22/07/2018 19:39

Definitely best to wait and see, they may get smaller, anyway best to avoid surgery if you can and it would likely be safer to have surgery if you're not overweight

BunsOfAnarchy · 22/07/2018 19:41

At my heaviest i was 40 F size 16

At my slimmest 34DD size 10

So quite a difference even with just 3 stone loss. I noticed mus less back pain at my slimmest too.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 22/07/2018 19:41

Hell yes
Lost 2.5 stones and my tits a rattling around in the bra

ChanklyBore · 22/07/2018 19:42

But a 32F is a significantly smaller breast size than a 40F.

Yes, OP when I lose weight my boobs get smaller, but I’ve never been in the dramatic weight loss category so we are talking about boobs going from a 34D to a 30E (which is smaller)

Good luck.

IllBeAtTheBarIfYouNeedMe · 22/07/2018 19:45

I lost 7st. I went from a 40c to a 36f. It sounds large but it wasn’t. They stayed in proportion although they are much flatter without a bra now.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 22/07/2018 19:46

I’ve always had a “healthy” weight (ie BMI between 18 and 25) but the last time I lost weight (about 1.5 stone - took me from BMI 24.9 to about 22) my boobs definitely got smaller. Enough for dh to notice and comment.

So even at a “healthy” weight there is quite a lot of fat there so - yes - losing significant weight should reduce your boob size if my experience is typical.

SerenDippitty · 22/07/2018 19:46

Mine didn’t get smaller when I lost two stone. In fact when I went to get measured at John Lewis because my D cup bras still didn’t fit I ended up with an F cup.

SerenDippitty · 22/07/2018 19:47

34D to 32F.

lessthanBeau · 22/07/2018 19:48

Yes, I've always been slim and a b cup. Around 42 I went from 8St to almost 10St, I had lovely 34dds, this year I've gone back to around 8 1/2 St and my poor boobies have shrunk to a c.

MadisonMontgomery · 22/07/2018 19:49

I lost 4 stone and literally none of it was from my G cup boobs. My aunt is the same boob size as me but a size 8 so I think I am genetically stuck with them.

Marymarg · 22/07/2018 19:50

Mine were like two deflated balloons once I lost weight. I've recently put a stone back on & they're just right now, for me anyway

ChanklyBore · 22/07/2018 19:50

It’s entirely possible to go up in cup size when you lose weight, as we are seeing here, because the band size is smaller. That does not mean that you have gained bigger boobs. It means they now take up more of the band because the band is smaller. It also happens because you go and get remeasured when perhaps you hadn’t done so at your biggest.

madeyemoodysmum · 22/07/2018 19:50

Lost 24lb but only went down a back size in bra. No reduction in cup size Angry

Stephisaur · 22/07/2018 19:52

They might, but it varies person to person how much.

I lost 4 stone and went from a 38D to a 34B (from 14 stone 10lbs to 10 stone 10lbs)

caoraich · 22/07/2018 19:52

It really depends how much is breast tissue. A colleague of mine was "overweight" despite being a size 8 on the bottom but on investigation at least 4kg of that was breast tissue. They calculated that getting her down to a 30D would put her into the normal BMI range which is why she got it on the NHS, otherwise she would have been told to lose more weight. She is so much happier and healthier now as she can do lots of exercise without pain.
