Sealife Centre, disabled ticket, tesco ticket

Aibu to think that I could use my Tesco entry ticket for the 3 year old and then get in for free as an essential carer for him?

Will they allow this do you think or would I need to pay full price for him to get in free as an essential carer?

I bought a ticket to use before he turned 3 but didn't get chance and I don't have enough tesco vouchers for a second one

SleepingStandingUp · 22/07/2018 17:12

I'm a wheelchair user and there's more to disabled attendance than it being a case of whether you could have gone alone. The Scarborough one is very impressive, they have a special route through, with a map, which avoids steps & is all ramps. One of the best-adjusted places I've visited - someone has clearly thought it through properly for a change.

I always think there's no harm in asking if you aren't going to be terribly upset by a no.

SilverySurfer · 22/07/2018 18:09

Don't all 3 year olds need to be accompanied by a carer (ie parent?) in which case not sure how you would get in for free

PinkyU · 22/07/2018 18:15

Are other posters really expecting the op to justify her child’s disability?

Op we have gotten free entry for a carer with a free or reduced price child/family ticket for a few places, as above I’d definitely recommend contacting the place for clarification. I hope you and your lo have a great time.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 22/07/2018 18:16

Well, in the case of my disabled DD(4), I couldn’t take her to an amusement park on my own, and I couldn’t have done it when she was 3, either. She’s too heavy for me to lift on and off rides without help. She wants to walk but can’t do more than a few steps at a time, so we need someone to help her walk and keep her safe and someone to push the buggy. I could list many more reasons why I couldn’t do it on my own, but the point of my post is really that just because a child is small, that doesn’t mean getting out and about with them is easy. And it’s even harder if you’ve got a child on oxygen or with other equipment that you need to lug around.

@SomethingNasty, the difference there is that you need an additional person, and therefore a free carers ticket is absolutely justified. If someone does not need an additional person to assist with care, if that person would be there irrespective, then that is not a reasonable adjustment.

When people abuse these policies it makes it so much more difficult for disabled people. Policies become more restrictive and people more judgemental about those of us with disabilities because we get stereotyped.

iveburntthetoast · 22/07/2018 18:23

I’m confused OP. Does your DS have a disability? (Sorry if I’m being a bit thick.)

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 22/07/2018 18:25

I’m assuming that the OP’s child has a disability - they don’t just give out carer’s tickets on a whim.

Maiyakat · 22/07/2018 18:26

I took DD to Sealife Centre when she was young enough to get in for free (it was under 4 then). I also got in free as her carer. I really couldn't care less if anyone on here disagrees with that - when you're living with the severity of disability or health condition a child must have in order to be entitled to DLA at the age of 3 you don't have the energy to be bothered by such things.

Hedgehog80 · 22/07/2018 18:30

Questioning a 3 year olds disability 🤔
Yes let’s make it even harder for parents to access anything that could make their lives a little easier when they are probably going through hell they have to justify anything they may be entitled to ....
OP we’ve been many times and had a free carer ticket. I hope you can sort it out and have a lovely time x

user139328237 · 22/07/2018 18:31

@Maiya
It's a good job that few people would do the same or they'd be nowhere to take your child as businesses like the sealife centre exist to make a profit and not to provide you with entertainment (and in the particular case of the sealife Centre would see hundreds of vulnerable creatures without anywhere to live).

Storminateapot · 22/07/2018 18:31

What are you lot on about?? You can't get a carers ticket just because you're with a child, presumably OP's child is disabled!

The way it works is the disabled person pays for their ticket as normal and their carer gets in free. I think OP is saying she didn't actually 'pay' for her disabled child's ticket but got it with a Tesco voucher, which is perfectly legitimate. She's asking if she can still get free entrance as a carer if the disabled person has their ticket on a voucher. I see no reason why she shouldn't.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 22/07/2018 18:32

What the fuck is wrong with you people?

theWarOnPeace · 22/07/2018 18:33

You can get a carers ticket with any valid ticket that was bought for a person with a dsibality. That includes 3yo children. That works for Legoland, Chessington, SeaLife, Disneyland and many other attractions. Perhaps before calling the OP a cheeky fucker, Pp can see how they get on with being a carer of a disabled 3 year old. There are so many additional expenses and difficulties in your life when your child is disabled, do people really begrudge them a free ticket from companies that sell rip off tickets in the first place? Disabilities in the family are a leading cause of poverty, not that I’m suggesting the OP is poor or otherwise, but having a disabled child is a massive financial factor for families. Yes OP, you will get a well-deserved carer’s ticket.

Storminateapot · 22/07/2018 18:34

So disabled children have no additional care needs, it's just like taking any other child out. Is that what you nasty lot are saying? What a disgrace!!

user139328237 · 22/07/2018 18:37

@thewar
I can't see too many people being bothered in the case of Merlin owned attractions, but for every one of theirs there are numerous locally owned and ran attractions that struggle to stay afloat year after year for whom the lost revenue however slight could be the difference between staying open and going bust.

Spikeyball · 22/07/2018 18:38

Sometimes the disabled child may only be able to cope with the place they are visiting for a short visit so it is reasonable the family as a whole pay less. The parent may also be doing far more caring whilst they are there than the parent of a non disabled child.
There are also plenty of places that do not give free carers places although children of a certain age can go in alone so the family ends up paying a lot more than others in that situation.

zen1 · 22/07/2018 18:39

A lot of ignorance about caring for a disabled child in this thread, irrespective of age.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 22/07/2018 18:40

i but for every one of theirs there are numerous locally owned and ran attractions that struggle to stay afloat year after year for whom the lost revenue however slight could be the difference between staying open and going bust.

That may well be true. But it won’t be because the OP, or others in her situation, claim the discount they’re entitled to.

theWarOnPeace · 22/07/2018 18:40

user you’ve clearly lost it, saying that crap to Maiya

You seriously begrudge a parent of a disabled child a free ticket out somewhere nice? “Everyone” can’t do the same, as not everyone has a disabled child, do they?? And don’t worry about the sea creatures that they stole from oceans around the world or bred in captivity to use for their own profits, I’m sure they won’t be homeless! Maybe have a bit of compassion for humans too? Twit.
