Interview and broken ankle?

totoromama · 22/07/2018 08:23

I've got an interview for a really good position on Friday. I haven't worked for a couple of years and this matches all my skill sets. It's quite niche and these kind of jobs don't come up very often.
But... I currently have a broken ankle. So I have a boot brace and crutches. The hospital says it'll be a week or so till I see a surgeon. My gp says it could be up to 8 weeks. Then they have to arrange surgery which could be god knows how long.
It's all just really bad timing
Aibu to think no matter how well I do I won't get the job because of this? My dh seems to think it'll be OK as he works in the same industry but I'm really doubtful.

i dont see why you shouldnt go to interview.
your ankle will heal.

flowery · 22/07/2018 08:26

What makes you think that? Will you be unable to do the job for a significant time and they would need you to start immediately?

Slartybartfast · 22/07/2018 08:26

could you work in this current situation?

flumpybear · 22/07/2018 08:28

Blimey yes just go to the interview they don't know the ins and outs of your surgery etc all you need to say is yes it's a broken ankle they'll probably assume it's just a cast so being fixed
Good luck!!

CoughLaughFart · 22/07/2018 08:31

The only way you can be sure you won’t get the job is by not going to the interview. If you’re worried, you could bring it up yourself and say you will need an operation at some point in the next two months and are waiting on confirmation of the date. If it’s that niche a role they’re unlikely to reject a good candidate on the basis that she might need some time off at some point.

JustlikeDevon · 22/07/2018 08:32

Unless the job is tap dancer or shoe model I fail to see the drama.

totoromama · 22/07/2018 08:35

I would be able to work atm. Its an IT position so office based. I've been told I need to keep the brace on until I get the surgery. Then I'd need about 3 weeks off then on crutches for another 3/6 months.

I'm just worried as It is very male dominated we moved from London to a small city where things aren't as enlightened as they could be. (I was told in an interview when I first moved down that they would not employ a female for the role - illegal I know)
I don't know how many people they are interested in but it'll probably only be a few and they'll probably be men.

Go for it! I've had job interviews when poorly and injured and usually got them. Shows resilience or some such thing and they've always mentioned it when I have started that they were impressed I still turned up despite x y z. But yes do go for it!

Good luck!!

Slartybartfast · 22/07/2018 08:36

what have you got to lose?

Anniegetyourgun · 22/07/2018 08:37

JustlikeDevon that reminds me of the hilarious (but oh, so politically incorrect) Peter Cook/Dudley Moore sketch about the one-legged man auditioning for the role of Tarzan Grin

DSis got a job once, at least partly because they were so impressed with her courage at travelling to town wearing a full-leg plaster for the interview. It proves you're really keen!

Never venture never win.
Go for it OP.
Best of luck and hope the ankle gets better in record breaking time. Smile

Polarbearflavour · 22/07/2018 08:50

Go for it OP, I’ve been to an interview in a boot and crutch before - I did let them know beforehand though.

Northernclementine1 · 22/07/2018 08:53

Can't see why it would affect your chances at all.

Perhaps let the company know ahead of time though so they can arrange a room without too many stairs if possible.

Good luck!

totoromama · 22/07/2018 08:56

Thanks that's made me feel better. I guess I was thinking about the negative side of things not the positive. Still attending in a lot of pain. And as chrome said at least I'll be remembered.
On a positive note I found a nice pair of trousers that cover most of the boot!

I've had an interview whilst wearing, at different times, an air boot, a wrist cast, and a body brace. Got all the roles. I think the determination needed to actually turn up was noted and worked in my favour.

Regarding the time off - if they're decent employers with an eye to the long game then this short term hiccup shouldn't put them off. It's almost like you having a three week holiday booked.

Good luck Flowers

UrsulaPandress · 22/07/2018 08:59

Go for it, but maybe don't mention the forthcoming surgery.

ToffeePennie · 22/07/2018 09:08

Do it! I went for an interview with a broken ankle (it had actually shattered) and got the job. They wanted me, not my physicality. I had to return a few days later for training and was on crutches with a full leg plaster as I had managed to break my thigh bone in the meantime and they laughed, asked me if I was always this fun and moved the training downstairs!

BikeRunSki · 22/07/2018 09:14

A friend of mine flogger her way across the Home Counties into Central london with a broken leg for an intervir. They were so impressed that she got the post.

infrequentposter88 · 22/07/2018 09:22

Go for it- i once had an interview and took a bad reaction from something from an activity and had to go with a swollen lip looking i had been in a fight in the last few days. As it happened the lead interviewer did the same activity and it helped build a rapport and helped me get the job.

Racoon100 · 22/07/2018 09:26

Definitely go for it. But depending on their sick policy you may not get full pay to cover the sick leave if you’ve only just started.

Walkingthroughawall · 22/07/2018 09:45

Can't see what the problem is - a broken ankle won't make any difference to whether you get the job.

If you needed surgery to fix fracture though you'd almost certainly have had it already (and wouldn't have been sent home walking on a boot).

Good luck.

totoromama · 22/07/2018 10:07

walking the surgery isn't to fix this fracture. Apparently I've fractured it a number of times and just put it down to torn ligament or bad sprain. I need either an ankle replacement or my ankle fused. There is a piece of bone missing and the bones don't meet where they should. As it's not shattered I was given a boot.

MrsMozart

Do you have some crazy hobby, like diving off cliffs?! 😂🙈

MissusGeneHunt · 22/07/2018 10:32

The previous post holder may have to give 2 months notice anyway so you will probably be OK. Go for it!! Good luck Smile
