Have a job but start in September. Don’t get paid until 28th.

Last day of work is today.

How can I live for two and a half months, can I claim jobseekers?

OP posts:
PrincessPear · 20/07/2018 06:44

You can but they’ll make you search for jobs. I had this for a month once, but it was when I was a teenager so I just dealt with it.

Slartybartfast · 20/07/2018 06:51

how do you manage currently?

search for jobs,? you do that in your home

Slartybartfast · 20/07/2018 06:51

why have you left such a big gap?

Lovebeingmama · 20/07/2018 06:54

Yes, claim. You have to say you’re looking for work in the intervening period. You shouldn’t have any issues though for such a short period of time. You can also claim council tax benefit (and housing benefit if you are in rented accommodation) .
I had a short gap between jobs and did this. I’m lucky enough to have always worked and felt a bit unsure about claiming benefits at first, but you’re entitled to the support and should claim it if you need it.

Stickmangate · 20/07/2018 06:58

To claim job seekers or most like niniversal credit now you would need to show you were actively job searching. Once you start your new job (assume 01/09) job seekers would cease regardless of when you get paid.

Sorry if it sounds harsh but benefits are not there to support people who have gaps like this. Why have you left such a long gap between jobs and as you presumably knew about this there is a responsibility on you to plan for it.

Slartybartfast · 20/07/2018 06:59

get a summer job?

penguinclub · 20/07/2018 07:03

Yes I’ve looked for summer jobs but there aren’t any really

OP posts:
InMySpareTime · 20/07/2018 07:08

Sign up with a few temp agencies for the summer. It'll take half the summer to get any benefits anyway, they usually make you wait 4-6 weeks.

It’s not always possible to line up job changes smoothly, and OP still has to buy food and pay bills.

Gotofriggingsleep · 20/07/2018 07:09

Depends on the area that you are in but Contributions based JSA would be the one paid to you if you aren't in a UC area. JSA is paid at £68 a week (possibly more if you are in receipt of PIP/DLA) and is paid fortnightly. You can claim from the day after you stop your last job. After you have completed the online form you will be called in to meet your Advisor. You have go attend weekly for the first 12 weeks of your claim and yes, evidence that you are looking for work. I was made redundant a few weeks ago from a Welfare to Work role and so experienced having a short spell receiving on JSA before securing a new role.

penguinclub · 20/07/2018 07:10

No i didn’t know about it. My current job are making me leave.

NewYearNewMe18 · 20/07/2018 07:14

My current job are making me leave.

Asin redundancy, or haven't passed the probation period?

penguinclub · 20/07/2018 07:15

As in, leave or we’ll dismiss you.

OP posts:
NewYearNewMe18 · 20/07/2018 07:17

Ah, in which case it will be viewed as making yourself unemployed.

I don't suppose you have that in writing/email?

LovelyBath77 · 20/07/2018 07:18

Could you check out in that situation if they have to pay you any kind of dismissal notice, or redundancy? Might tide you over to the next job. If you have to claim UC (could check if in your area) it apparently takes months but can be backdated.

Slartybartfast · 20/07/2018 07:20

Agree, join an agency, a cleaning agency, an admin agency

Toomanydecisions · 20/07/2018 07:20

I don't have much advice, in fact I have none, but I think this is exactly the kind of situation that you should be able to claim benefits for. The OP works (pays into the system) and should be entitled to some help for the couple of months she is off work. Fingers crossed you can claim something.

Slartybartfast · 20/07/2018 07:21

bar work, cafe work?

Slartybartfast · 20/07/2018 07:22

ring your council regarding benefits, they were great when dh was made redundant.

penguinclub · 20/07/2018 07:22

Yes I have been looking for something but nothing. Oh well.

OP posts:
Souledout · 20/07/2018 07:24

I would ring all care homes & hotels and ask if they need a cleaner.

Throwaway4misc · 20/07/2018 07:25

Hi OP.
Do you live with anyone else or have DCs?
There are a few things that could affect your claim but it's hard to advise without knowing.

NewYearNewMe18 · 20/07/2018 07:26

Redundancy only applies if you have been employed for two years, as do full employment rights.

The OP says she's had to resign or be dismissed, which makes her intentionally unemployed.

I agree with other - cleaning/agency/fast food outlet.

penguinclub · 20/07/2018 07:26

No it’s just JSA I need but looks like I’m not eligible. I genuinely don’t know how I’m going to live. I’ll sell some stuff.
