To want to shout it from the rooftops - my autistic DS has started to talk!

Bobbybobbins · 19/07/2018 22:29

My autistic DS is 4 and about to start school. He spoke until 2 then had a massive regression and stopped talking completely.

Just this past two weeks he has started saying single words again.

I don't want to go on about it to everyone I meet, even though I feel like I could.

He might say 'I love you' soon!

How lovely! That must be utterly amazing to hear. I hope it all comes back in a flood for him now, seems like it is with the "bye" loud and proud to the cashier.

Rainatnight · 20/07/2018 06:48

Bravo, so delighted for you.

Brilliant SmileSmileSmileSmile

I remember when my son (dxd with autism at 28 months) said his first words from 3.5 yrs old, it was everything to me. By 6 he had about 30 words, by 8 about 100 words, by 10 he managed to put 2 or 3 words together accurately (although most of his sentences were echolalic). He is now nearly 15 and every word he says is still a treat and our mini conversations are golden.

Good luck OP and huge huge well done to you and your son xx

Oh OP this has brought me to tears with how fantastic this is! Go DS! Enjoy every word StarStarStar

MustBeThursday · 20/07/2018 07:46

Yay! That's amazing!! It'm so pleased for you!

My 4 year old who is in the middle of autism assessment didn't say a single word, point or gesture until she was 2 and a half. She mostly uses stock phrases but can put together short sentences of her own now. She has very very recently said for the first time "love mommy" and I think I may have cried!

TwoGinScentedTears · 20/07/2018 08:11

Go BabyBobby! Well not a baby, but alliteration worked!

Fantastic news. You must be over the moon.

Strippervicar · 20/07/2018 08:51

What a special thing, OP. My DD said 'love you mummy' just this week at 3.5. Another here with ASC and lots of echolalia and scripted answers. So I am blatantly ignoring that DH taught her to say it because it was a nice thing cos she said it in context. I was over the moon. Like I am for you. :)

Onward, upwards. Any speech is great. So much easier on the ears and brain than trying to decipher screams of different pitch.

Bobbybobbins · 20/07/2018 08:52

Aw thanks for the lovely comments everyone! I have cried a little bit reading them all. So lovely to hear about everyone else's experiences too.

It's funny that the first thing that made us realise he was starting to get his speech back was him singing 'Wah wah wah' and we couldn't work out what he was singing. Turned out to be from 'Wheels on the bus' when it's 'the babies on the bus go wah wah wah' 😂
