AIBU to think men prefer fake looking women?

I can't help but feel suspicious everytime I read the results from a survey where it is suggested that men prefer the "natural" look. This just doesn't seem to reflect my experience in real life and also what I see on social media or on TV.

We have Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian who have both obviously had a LOT of work being viewed as the pinnacle of female attractiveness whilst Meghan from Love Island who has apparently been completely remodeled by surgeon seems to have attracted the most men in Love Island.

AIBU to suggest despite their protestations that men actually don't favour the natural look at all?

Would rather have Leo's bod (on a man) anyday, than the Love Island blokes bods!

handslikecowstits · 19/07/2018 14:06

Apileofballyhoo I worked with a woman who got up at five every morning to apply her make-up before her husband got up. He'd never seen her without it, apparently.

JaneJeffer · 19/07/2018 14:06

Because they can't get those women MissCherry so they have to put up with us natural beauties Grin

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 19/07/2018 14:07

The media is part of a capitalist system that thrives on human dissatisfaction and vulnerability. It perpetuates itself by encouraging you to believe that you are not good enough as you are, that you are deficient unless you use this product. It sells a fantasy, a lie. The images you see of women are not what genuine men find attractive - they're airbrushed and cosmeticised images to make you notice how far you deviate from some impossible norm.

Do you have an example of these "surveys" asking men who they find attractive? Because I've never seen one.

Also, among the men I know, Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian are certainly not "the pinnacle of female attractiveness". More likely that's just what the mainstream tabloid media (and primarily celeb trash news aimed at women) is telling you.

Rosstac · 19/07/2018 14:10

Women with fake boobs’, fake eyelashes, fake lips, fake eyebrows, fake tan, fake white teeth, fake bottom, are moaning that they can’t find a real man, that made me laugh.

Shortstuff08 · 19/07/2018 14:10

I am not fake looking at all. I had my boobs reduced that's it.

Since splitting with exh I thought no one would look at me again. But I am not short of male attention. Although, quite frankly, I don't get why. I am a size 16 and not anything to look at.

Dp loves how I look on a morning, in my shorts and big t-shirt, messy hair and no make up. But he does also love how I look when I have had my make up done, false washes (I love them) and all dressed up.

I would hate if Dp expected me to be done up all the time.

noeffingidea · 19/07/2018 14:10

I've been watching some old footage on youtube from the 1976 heatwave, and there were a lot of comments on how attractive the women looked. Slim in a natural way (not the gym workout look), small obviously natural breasts, minimal makeup, simple hairstyles. Personally I agree that most men prefer women to look natural, they like to know what they're getting, so to speak. There's also an assumption that women who spend a lot of time and money on their appearance are shallow, superficial and maybe a bit dim and lacking in personality. Note, I do not agree with this myself.

Buster72 · 19/07/2018 14:12

Ugh it's not porn culture....
More woman than men follow the Kardashian and love island, at least I don't know a single heterosexual male who follows these two.

It depends on circumstances. Day at the beach....totally natural...important formal dinners then full make up hair and dress...casual night out wear what you comfortable in.

WarPigeon · 19/07/2018 14:13

I think plastic faces, makeup applied with a spade and pornstar boobs look horrendous but each to their own.

busyboysmum · 19/07/2018 14:16

I always think of this song when I think of the efforts people go to to look fake:

AFTER THE BALL (Dismantled Bride)

After the ball was over
She took out her glass eye.
Stood her false leg in the corner,
Corked up her bottle of dye.
Put her false teeth in the tumbler;
Hung her false hair on the wall.
All the rest went to the bye-bye,
After the ball.

Bumpitybumper · 19/07/2018 14:18

To all those saying it's women who are driving this look, why then is porn dominated by fake looking women? I would think if the female driven theory was correct then we would see fashion magazines targeted at women filled with this kind of look whilst lad mags and porn should have lots of natural beauties, however it's the reverse isn't it?

Often what men think is natural involves plenty of make-up anyway, just not the contouring, HD brows, etc.

Arealmanithink · 19/07/2018 14:20

Man here.. I think some men like the fake look because it demonstrates that that woman needs to feel approval, and she'll go to extremes to get it. Some men like insecurity and exploit it. Surgery signals insecurity and a lack of self worth based on looks. Thus a weakness that's exploitable..ie. Wow you look great now..etc.. Debate

Loopytiles · 19/07/2018 14:22

Of course it’s porn culture, that’s where the look originated.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 19/07/2018 14:23

Men aren't very good at spotting the various things women slap on themselves to look nice. So they'd think Megan or the Kardashians look "natural". (Few people can spot brilliant cosmetic surgery without a "before" picture.)

Men only seem to spot totally OTT stuff like really fake-looking tan, extreme hair extensions, 6" heels etc. That's the crap they say they don't like.

I doubt men honestly prefer the 100% "natural" look of unwashed hair, hairy armpits, wild eyebrows, etc.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 19/07/2018 14:24

Women dress to impress other women.

Men like women who impress other men.

That's how I've also seen it, anyway.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 19/07/2018 14:24

*always, not also.

Twofishfingers · 19/07/2018 14:25

I think some men do like the fake type, and in my observations they tend to be the superficial type, who enjoy power and money, big show off cars, and many of them are in a powerful position in life. Fortunately I have never been attracted by these type of men, the 'sugar daddy' type, and I have never never felt that I had to fit into the image of fake beauty.

Some women do drive it though, I think, amongst themselves and their peer group. I live close to Essex and no it's not a stereotype - there are loads of women who have the full fake body, boobs, lips, make up, expensive clothes, and the stupid little dog that goes with the look. Their business I guess.

I do believe that statistically, most men prefer a natural looking woman.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 19/07/2018 14:27

Porn? I'm assuming you mean porn that you have seen so Vanilla, porn is a huge box of strangeness....I'm not into BDSM, Pony Play, amputee fetish, gay, or any of the many many thousands of types of porn out there however other than Vanilla porn you will find a huge range of body shapes sizes colours and abilities so don't go blaming porn for your perceived view of what "men" like

Matcha · 19/07/2018 14:28

I think the way women are supposed to present themselves, in order to be considered attractive, differs greatly across different social groups and demographics. So there isn't any one standard.

In my hometown, the dark eyebrows/fake tan/hair extensions look is the norm (especially amongst younger women). If you don't conform to that standard, you'd be considered quite drab and dowdy.

Where I live now, the standard is for a carefully curated 'natural' look. Of course, it's not much more natural than the Love Island style: it's about trying-not-to-look-like-you're-trying, a social indicator of refined taste and quiet affluence.

It's all pretty much bollocks, isn't it? The unifying factor is always that there's much more social pressure for women to spend time and money on their appearance. I agree that men expressing a preference for the natural looks is pointless, since we've (on the whole) lost sight of what that actually is. When I don't wear any makeup now, I think I look quite tired and crumpled, but... that's really just my face.

Great Amy Schumer song: 'Girl, You Don't Need Makeup':

Loopytiles · 19/07/2018 14:30

Have no idea what men like, but the specific look OP is talking about is from porn, now mainstream.

FlyingElbows · 19/07/2018 14:30

Porn does not only exist in the uber fake format. There's a lid for every pot. It's this blanket "men are..." and "porn is..." mindset that makes people stop listening.

Bumpitybumper · 19/07/2018 14:31

@MissCherryCakeyBun
But all porn isn't equally popular is it, so yes there is fetish stuff etc but most mainstream porn
aimed at the masses stars fake looking women. I don't think that's a particularly controversial statement.

I don't really understand why you're so angry about my opinion about what most men like? It's an opinion after and you're free to disagree but I don't know why you find it so offensive?
