To not see how I can follow the advice 'feed baby what ever you are having'?

Maybe I am being over cautious- 8mo is my PFB after all and am terrified of getting the weaning thing wrong!

But yesterday was the first time I've had him weighed since we started weaning him. All fine - perfect weight gain etc but the HV is telling me that as long as I'm not giving him honey or full nuts, anything goes!

So... what about the piri piri smoked fish I had earlier in the week? And should I not make him separate portions of chilli with less spice in? Tonight's dinner is veggie omelette - should I just get over myself and give him some of that? Or carry on giving separate food to us?

I feel pretty stupid for finding this so difficult!

Seafood is fine.

Good quality sausages are fine. Potatoes are fine, mashed with milk, butter and a little pepper. Homemade gravy would be fine as long as with low salt stock.

Katri0na · 18/07/2018 18:39

sausages are far too salty

was advised by paediatrician not to give seafood - he actually laughed about it, as in no one would even think to give seafood to a baby

triangulator · 18/07/2018 18:40

They can have strawberries whenever they like!

LaurieMarlow · 18/07/2018 18:42

Gamon
Pineapple
Anything with honey
Seafood
Mackerel
Strawberries shouldn't be introduced too young either

I thought it was just honey that should be restricted before 1?

I've never seen anything like this list. Gammon I get because it's salty. Don't see anything wrong with the rest (DS ate bucket loads of strawberries at that age).

LaurieMarlow · 18/07/2018 18:43

I know lots of babies who've enjoyed seafood. A friends child's favourite food at that age was mussels.

LaurieMarlow · 18/07/2018 18:44

No issues with quality sausages either, in moderation.

FlyingDandelionSeed · 18/07/2018 18:44

Would love to hear some examples of these ‘real foods’ that adults wouldn’t feed to children!

I listed a bunch of them in my post two before yours. And to be clear we are taking about babies, not 'children' (I'd give even a toddler a lot more things than a 6 month old, much higher salt tolerance etc).

looondonn · 18/07/2018 18:46

thank you for these great ideas
much needed

Katri0na · 18/07/2018 18:46

I was advised not to give strawberries too young, and it worked really well for mine They have since caught up!
Any exotic fruit, kiwi, pineapple was a big no too.

Every year there are different rules anyway, but I stuck with the ones for my first and it was easier for me.

BertrandRussell · 18/07/2018 18:48

"Waaaay too many additives, and bad ratios of salt/fat/sugar. Lacking so often in a good range of essential nutrients"

Not in my house, sunshine!

DryHeave · 18/07/2018 18:48

My baby eats a version of what we eat, but the next day. He eats at 5pm and we eat at 7:30pm. As PFB as he is, I’d rather he had our leftovers than vice versa.

LaurieMarlow · 18/07/2018 18:51

I was advised not to give strawberries too you ... Any exotic fruit, kiwi, pineapple was a big no too.

But why?

CraftyGin · 18/07/2018 18:51

We always weaned straight to family food. I can’t imagine preparing separate meals for a baby.

Hangingaroundtheportal · 18/07/2018 18:51

Gamon
Pineapple
Anything with honey
Seafood
Mackerel
Strawberries shouldn't be introduced too young either

The only things off that list that would be a problem are gammon as its salty (although the amount a 6 month old would actually eat would be tiny) and honey.

Don't understand what's wrong with seafood? Confused

Foggymist · 18/07/2018 18:52

Why on earth would you not give a baby seafood? Where did you get that random list from Katri0na?

Katri0na · 18/07/2018 18:52

It was because of allergies if I remember well.

Pumperthepumper · 18/07/2018 18:53

FlyingDandelion I missed your post, sorry. But that’s quite specific to your baby - my kids (now and when they were babies) would eat everything on your list. Bar anything salty, there’s no reason they can’t have anything you mentioned.

Katri0na · 18/07/2018 18:54

that list was given by paediatricians, which we used to see monthly for the first year of each baby's life. I must have the full list somewhere, I haven't really looked at it now that my youngest is in Primary School!

triangulator · 18/07/2018 18:55

But one could argue about allergies for most foods. Wheat/seafood/nuts etc. The advice is Only to minimise salt and not give honey. Everything else is fine. Or at least that's the NHS recommendations, and what I go by. It may be different in other countries.

I would give sausages in moderation, but I'd buy decent quality ones and check the salt level.

LaurieMarlow · 18/07/2018 18:55

The latest research suggests you should introduce allergens young. Personally I'm good with the 'eat everything you're eating' mantra. Makes a lot more sense to me.

Bambamber · 18/07/2018 18:55

My daughter is under the care of a dietician and paediatrician, seafood is absolutely fine. In fact I was told the only things off limits below 1 is honey and whole nuts.

Salt below 1 shouldn't exceed 1g per day. You can give things like gamon and sausages if you find lowest salt options and ensure no other salt during the day as their intake usually isn't huge at that age anyway. Obviously there are exceptions to this.

n0ne · 18/07/2018 18:57

We feed 10mo what we eat, we just cook with less salt and chilli. She loves kedgeree, for eg, which I make with smoked mackerel. Omelette is one of her staple foods! As long as she can gum it into submission, it's fair game. Why not?

NotTakenUsername · 18/07/2018 18:58

Wow, no wonder so many new mums are overwhelmed. So much conflicting advice.

CraftyGin · 18/07/2018 18:59

My youngest child foraged off everyone else’s plates, or crawled on the floor and fed on what her messy siblings dropped. Once she was past that stage, we got a dog.

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 18/07/2018 18:59

The allergy thing has been pretty much debunked, in fact it appeared to make things worse I believe. Honey is avoided because of a small risk of botulism. Swordfish due to mercury. Otherwise I crack on, cutting things like grapes of course, and making milder curry and chilli than usual, but otherwise they've had the same as us.
