To keep leftover takeaway food from the indians?

princesspeppax · 17/07/2018 16:03

Our local regular takeaway is doing a great deal with a large amount of food for £20 - but its way more than we will be able to eat so will be left with extra lamb and chicken curry, chicken pakora, rice and nan. I think we should order something else rather than having to much but dp is adamant we should get this deal and can use the leftover for the next few days? Aibu to ask is this safe or is it totally gross BlushHmm

blackwatchbelle I’ve also never had any problems with reheated rice.

However, I understand that the food poisoning you can get from it, while uncommon, is really really awful. Since learning that, I’ve decided not to take the risk.

mumeeee · 17/07/2018 16:15

It's fine to eat left over Indian Take away the next day. I've done this. Also you can reheat rice if done properly

lastnamefirstfirstnamelast · 17/07/2018 16:16

I thought you had some chippewa tribe coming round and they hated takeout food

princesspeppax · 17/07/2018 16:20

Apologies about the title im unsure how to edit it SadBlush

It didn't come across as racist to me- but it's very common to add random Ss on to the end of shops in our local dialect.

Tescos, Asdas, the chemists, the butchers, the greengrocers, yadda yadda yadda.

People are just having a shitfit for no reason.

VickyEadie · 17/07/2018 16:23

Rice you buy from the supermarket in a plastic tray and microwave - THAT's reheated, isn't it?

wellBeehivedWoman · 17/07/2018 16:24

It's pretty obvious you weren't being racist OP, and I bet the PPs criticising you would happily say 'I've ordered from the chinese' which is exactly the same! It's a dialect thing, not a sign that you're secretly a Nazi Hmm

AutumnMadness · 17/07/2018 16:28

I would keep the takeaway food from people of any nationality, not just the Indians. Keep off my curry! It's mine!

But more seriously: Unless your local takeaway is spectacularly dodgy with its hygiene practices, why would you not eat the food the next day? Do you chuck any leftovers from your cooking? I just fail to see an issue.

BarbaraofSevillle · 17/07/2018 16:29

Well, I have been reheating left overs (including rice!!) for a very long time and never suffered ill affects. I have even (gasp!!) re-heated 2 days later

Me too. I dread to think how much perfectly good food has gone to waste because so many people seem convinced that reheated rice will give them food poisoning. I've been doing this regularly for decades with no ill effects. The actual risk must be tiny.

krustykittens · 17/07/2018 16:29

We do this all the time - it means a weekend of no cooking, WHOO HOO!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 17/07/2018 16:29

In all my life I have never had an issue with leftover rice.

And IMO leftover Indian take-away is better on day 2 than when 'fresh'.

Enjoy!

AutumnMadness · 17/07/2018 16:31

krustykittens - exactly! That's one of the reasons I love takeaways. It's usually two or sometimes even three meals for the price of one!

FlyingDandelionSeed · 17/07/2018 16:31

Glad people have already corrected that odd 'you can't reheat rice' myth.

Basically a long time ago people were treating cooked rice like a loaf of bread (i.e. keeping it out on a kitchen worktop for days then reheating it) which was dangerous. But treat it like you would meat (i.e. stick it in the fridge) and it's fine to eat cold or reheat later for a few days.

BarbaraofSevillle · 17/07/2018 16:31

If we're being pedantic, the title suggests that the OP doesn't want to share her leftovers with some unspecified Indian people.

Which is a shame because Indian people are famously generous with food and most will have shared their leftovers on many occasions.

DiscoMoo · 17/07/2018 16:32

There are umpteen chilled rice based meals that you can buy from supermarkets and reheat. They wouldn’t be on sale if the risk was that high. Just make sure the rice is reheated until it’s piping hot.

speakout · 17/07/2018 16:34

We regularly reheat Indian leftovers- including rice.

I have even been know to freeze it.

haven't been ill in 20 years doing this.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 17/07/2018 16:36

Ignoring the Wannabe Offendeds...

We often order a big meal and then freeze most of it back. If we buy an ordinary meal for 2 we can get 3 meals for 2 out of it just by adding fresh naan and/or rice later.

And we put leftover rice in the fridge to cool immediately and freeze it when it is stone cold. Food hygiene certificate and all that!

Storm4star · 17/07/2018 16:38

I've also frozen take away rice, well take away all sorts actually! Never made me ill either. I probably wouldn't feed it to someone with any kind of health issue, very young etc but a robust adult should be fine!

TattyCat · 17/07/2018 16:38

We always freeze leftovers, including rice (but not bread!). It's always been absolutely fine as long as it's reheated to a high enough temperature.

Stephisaur · 17/07/2018 16:43

Freeze the curries for a cba to cook day, the rest (except the rice) should be ok to eat over the next few days :)

Nolagerformethanks · 17/07/2018 16:44

Yes you can reheat rice but in all honesty the restaurant has probably pre cooked it and reheated it to send to you, even with cooling it safely and keeping it when you come to reheat it may well be the second time it's been reheated which is bacteria thriving territory.

ineedwine99 · 17/07/2018 16:50

I always have leftovers, mostly from the chinese, i reheat for lunch the next day, just making sure it is nuked in the microwave

Oldraver · 17/07/2018 17:06

I love cold leftover curry and rice stuffed into the nan

Happyhippy45 · 17/07/2018 17:08

You can reheat rice..... but shouldn't to it multiple times. The takeaway would reheat the rice for your meal.
Personally I wouldn't reheat it. cold curry is surprisingly tasty You don't know when the curry etc was made. No guarantee it was made fresh that day.....and they may have reheated elements of the dishes.
It most likely will be fine but there is a bit of a risk.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 17/07/2018 17:11

Oh oh oh ineedwine99 said 'chinese' shoot her now!!!
