People shortening your name

I don't think I'm being unreasonable but it's happening so much that I'm wondering if I am!

For example, you introduce yourself to someone as "Katherine" and they reply with "hello Katie". It gets my back up. When I've politely corrected them and said "It's Katherine" they appear to get irked that you've corrected them.

Katherine isn't my name but it's a similarly long name and I just don't like the shortened versions so prefer my given name.

Mine is always made longer by people as that's the more common version. Drives me mad. A really good friend does it, I always pull her up on it, she apologises then does it again five minutes later.
It's such as short easy name, albeit one that Spanish people struggle to pronounce.

I hate this. I often find on introducing myself as Elizabeth I get "so is that Liz or Lizzy or..." to which I tend to reply "...It's Elizabeth". It's the automatic assumption that I shorten my name that irritates me.

ThePartyArtist, surely everyone in South Wales cannot be that rude? To shorten a name to just one syllable is just silly.

SparkleSoiree · 18/07/2018 10:02

I don't understand why people do it.

I'm an Elizabeth. People automatically shorten it to Liz/Lizzy. Doesn't bother me at all, but nicknames/shortenings are just the done thing in Australia, so I accept that there is a cultural element to this.

Mousefunky · 18/07/2018 10:10

Some people do it the other way and call you by your full name when you introduce yourself as the shortened version, equally irritating.

I have a name that could be shortened but nobody EVER has!!

I have a hyphenated name, I hate my full name though. My family hate my name being shortened, so they always use my full name, and in front of my family my full nam is used by everyone (it saves so many arguments). But when my family aren't around (which is most of the time because they live 250 miles away, and I'm NC with my mums side, so it's only ever my dad anyway), everyone shortens my name. I tell them to.
