I've made a horrible mistake

So due to finish my degree employers have agreed to fund a masters all is looking well. Had my final module result and it's a fail. I've submitted my draft not my actual assignment. I can resit but grade will be capped which will drag my entire degree down outside of threshold for a masters. 6years of part time study.

Can you please tell me about your awful mistakes? I can't believe I've done something so stupid. Don't whether to laugh or cry

oh bollocks, :(

BastardGoDarkly · 17/07/2018 09:59

No!? Is there no one you can talk to? That seems very harsh Sad

StealthPolarBear · 17/07/2018 09:59

Do you have a tutor? Surely there must be something that can be done

testingmitb · 17/07/2018 09:59

Can you appeal the result? Take a look at the course guidelines and the University's ordinances and regulations and see if you have grounds for appeal.

ShapelyBingoWing · 17/07/2018 10:02

Can you pay to retake the module so you can submit it without a cap?

EmmaGrundy · 17/07/2018 10:07

Can you apply for a concession/mitigating circumstances (bit different to an appeal) so that this attempt is disregarded and your mark on the next attempt is not capped?

Check your regs, there may be a time limit for these applications (ours is ten working days from publication of results).

Moominfan · 17/07/2018 10:09

From the guidelines my circumstances don't quite meet resubmit without capping. Tried student support but there systems were down. Going to try call in the evening. I'm hoping I might have some joy going down special circumstances route or pay for another module entirely

ferntwist · 17/07/2018 10:12

Is it Open University? Definitely try to talk to your tutor and student support. This is a case for special circumstances to be invoked.

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 17/07/2018 10:15

Oh love. What a nightmare. Student support may well be able to help as mistakes happen and you should be able to prove from time and date stamp that your assignment was finished in time. If you've been very stressed make sure they know as that will go in your favour as mistakes happen under pressure.

This will be massively outing to anyone who knows me but I was sacked from a job during my probation period for accidentally sending an email with an attachment including confidential pricing to a competitor. It was just after we'd bought our first house and 4 months before our wedding! I honestly thought it was the end of the world. 11 years on, it's the best thing that could have happened to me as I wouldn't be where I am now. You've just gotta pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick and pull yourself together. You'll get through this. Fight for it! It was an honest mistake.

Bombardier25966 · 17/07/2018 10:22

Are there any mitigating circumstances, and is there a good reason why these were not submitted within the usual time frame (before your result)?

Onesqueakywheel · 17/07/2018 10:23

This happened to my daughter. She appealed under mitigating circumstances and it was approved. As I remember she submitted a letter with some doctors evidence showing stress.
As a result she was able to resubmit with no cap and passed with a good grade. It's certainly worth trying if you think you have mitigating circumstances.
Good luck.

Justtheonequestion · 17/07/2018 10:27

I got a masters resubmission second attempt treated as a first attempt for extenuating circumstances, which let me receive a distinction. But I had to provide evidence, which they let me do AFTER the first marking. Go and talk to them and think of anything you can do.
Word documents are dated so you can prove through the IT department that you finished it on time. Don't take no for an answer.

pippistrelle · 17/07/2018 10:27

Your tutors/institution want you to do well too as a good result for you is a good result for them. The extenuating circumstances/mitigating factors route is successful more often than not, ime.

EmmaGrundy · 17/07/2018 10:40

Bomb, mit circs are not always apparent before results are released. The usual period where I work is ten clear days after release of results.

Agree with Pippi, ime these applications are usually successful

AbsentmindedWoman · 17/07/2018 10:41

Not sure I understand - if it's only a draft you've submitted, can you not edit the final paper before handing it in?

Someone mentioned paying to resit so as not to be capped at a pass rate, is that actually a thing?! You can just pay to have another crack?

Summersup · 17/07/2018 10:45

I am hoping for you that you can resubmit.

If you can't, though, many Masters courses will accept you with a lower grade if you have evidence/can explain why your grade doesn't reflect your true ability e.g. references from tutors, transcript showing much higher marks and so on.

Definitely seek redress in the first instance, but there may be more wiggle room than you think for the Masters, if you phone or email the module convenor and get advice on how to proceed.

StealthPolarBear · 17/07/2018 10:46

She handed in an earlier draft of the assignment bt accident, rather than the final document, is my understanding

BentOutOfShape · 17/07/2018 10:46

I think it’s really shady to use ‘mitigation circumstances’ unless there are genuine mitigating circumstances but in this case I would do so.

Unfortunately for the many honest students around there are plenty of students that use mitigating circumstances as a free pass. I know this because so many of my kids friends used it. It’s a simple as going to the doctors and telling them you are stressed, which won’t be a lie because you are stressed! and emphasizing that you were so stressed that you didn’t realize you were stressed before submitting your final module.

I would do this in your circumstances. I wouldn’t feel great about it but I would do it and I wouldn’t look back.

Good luck. I really hope you can get it sorted.

clippityclock · 17/07/2018 10:46

I'd use mitigating circumstances too. Put down stress etc. I was able to sit my physiology exam 4 times due to stress.

Also I do not have a degree with Hons only a BSc due to time limits running out (top up from diploma, with courses spread out over too many years and would have had to take 2 more courses to be in the time frame to then be able to do a dissertation). I am still able to do a Masters after speaking to the Uni. I really wouldn't be put off by that because they will look at all your other grades.

soulrider · 17/07/2018 10:49

I think universities must differ widely in what they accept as mitigating circumstances. I was late handing a final assignment in as was giving statements to police after my friend was found dead. Wasn't mitigating enough apparently (still bitter!)

susurration · 17/07/2018 10:49

Ahhh, i'm sorry. I have no words of wisdom but you're not alone in this silly mistake.

I did exactly the same in History A Level. Submitted the draft copy of my final essay paper (no annotations, no footnotes, no quote citations) instead of the final paper and ended up with a D overall instead of the B I was predicted.

StealthPolarBear · 17/07/2018 10:50

Soul that is awful, do sorry :(

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/07/2018 10:52

Oh dear. It’s just one of those things. I left a job with real potential for one, that I knew I’d hate because it paid more money and dh - then dp and I needed money pretty desperately. If I did it all again I’d stay. I never got a job that I liked that much again so that was a very big mistake. On the plus side my life would be very different now.

AbsentmindedWoman · 17/07/2018 10:54

Oh! Oh god that is horrendous. I thought you meant for example you had submitted a dissertation draft to supervisor and they were giving an estimated mark.

I hope you can still get on your Masters OP. So sorry you're in this situation, it's truly shit.

BentOutOfShape · 17/07/2018 10:56

That’s awful. Was it recently? I suspect if you had gone down the too stressed route you might have succeeded.
