I've made a horrible mistake

So due to finish my degree employers have agreed to fund a masters all is looking well. Had my final module result and it's a fail. I've submitted my draft not my actual assignment. I can resit but grade will be capped which will drag my entire degree down outside of threshold for a masters. 6years of part time study.

Can you please tell me about your awful mistakes? I can't believe I've done something so stupid. Don't whether to laugh or cry

oh how terrible for you hun.
I know this is never easy to do but im going to use that age old line "its done now so try not to dwell" and I don't mean that in a minimising it way.i mean what can you do now to cope with this.
you actually sound really composed and being really calm and amazingly collected about it and that's a real credit to you.even though it must keep hitting you in waves of devastation your being really brave.
try not to keep going over the what if and ohhhh what coul have been.becasue it wont be.it cant be.its done.
you made a mistake non of us would be okay with.but it wasn't anything on who you are.it doesn't mean your bad.just a bad situation.
so you gotta get your fighting pants on and keep on going.if you were on your way to masters and passing with such brill grades that means your good enough and have all of it in you to get back on it.
yes it might take time and yes it will keep hitting you im sure with sorrow.but that's normal.your only human.
many things in life make us change direction.
many things mean we take more or less time over things
many thngs in life mean we want to slap ourselves in the face!
but what happens next is the big bit.its the important bit.
this doesn't change how capable you are or your smile or your strength or ambition or your laugh or how you look brilliant in flip flop hahaha it doesn't change you.it just means things happen.and you can go on.keep going.
think how much more it will mean when you get to where you want to be.
people might be cruel about it but most people will just love you and wan to support you through it.allow a bit of nobbish rigging its how people probaby want to lift for the pain for you too.

When I redid M250 the TMAs were slightly different although they were intended to test the same understanding of the same concepts.

ihoppancake · 18/07/2018 23:12

Oh OP what a shame! Sad

I work in a university and where I work this wouldn't get granted an appeal/complaint/mitigating circumstances I am afraid.

However, despite the resit being capped you may find that you still come out with a decent mark overall and that one capped module doesn't bring down your classification too much. Would certainly be worth looking into how your institution works out classifications.

I must admit that I am really shock that with the OU you are allowed to just pay for another module and that the one you failed would just be discounted and the new module counted in your classification.

In my university if you failed a final year module there's no second chance and you would just leave with an ordinary unclassified degree.

ResurrectedGoldfish · 18/07/2018 23:27

Oh OP, this is the stuff of nightmares!! You have my full sympathy. Having said that, it might be worth speaking to the uni you’re doing your masters with. I failed my one of my fourth year modules and opted to take an ordinary degree rather than an honours one. I started working in the area I wanted to, and a couple of years later when I decided to do my masters, I spoke to the course coordinator, showed him my transcripts, spoke about my experience through work and why I wanted to do the masters degree and they were happy to accept me. It’s definitely worth a punt, they may let you in anyway and accept work experience as entry requirements xxx

singadream · 19/07/2018 00:28

Hi @moominfan. I work in a uni. I would strongly advise you emailing the admissions tutor of your masters course explaining everything. They may let you in anyway especially if you can provide them a transcript so they see your other module marks. Do this sooner rather than later. They will have a lot of leeway. Once you have your masters no one will ever care what grade you got in your first degree.

As for your question. I once applied for an internship and was cutting and pasting my applications and wrote dear x, I want to work at y, and put z on the envelope. So three different organisations on one application. Doh. They wrote back and pointed this error out to me. And didn’t offer me the work exp.

kateandme · 19/07/2018 00:41

resurrectedgoldfish sounds like it worked out really well for you and maybe even better with your now experience under your belt.good on you

SemperIdem · 19/07/2018 00:44

No advice but full sympathy Flowers

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 19/07/2018 07:33

I'm doing OU. Though the system gives warnings etc this is so so easily done and I feel your pain. This could happen to any one of us.

I've just remembered a similar experience to share. I was all ready to do my driving test. Lots of practice, swotting up HC, lucky mascots, well-wishing from well-wishers, even a lovely hand-made good luck poster in the window of my sister's house who lived near the test centre. In I trotted confidently to be told I couldn't do it as I hadn't signed my sodding driving license. I'd got a new one with new address on. I thought they were joking. I cried :-( was awful. Got a right telling off from my instructor who had checked my original one was signed.

ChilliMum · 19/07/2018 07:53

Op, this happened to me. I was sick for a class and picked up a copy of the notes from another person on my course but she didn't give me the assignment we were given (my fault I should have spoken to the lecturer) but as a result I didn't submit the assignment. I was allowed to do it late but obviously I got a capped Mark for the module.

It brought my final grade to just below 2.1. However I had a viva at the end of the degree as I was borderline and it was clear I had the 1 outlier and they awarded a 2.1 so speak to your course leader and see if this might be an option.

huggybear · 19/07/2018 08:44

How did that happen chilli? Wasn't the assessment info on the module/unit outline or on turnitin or equivalent? I'm very surprised that you can retake modules for uncapped marks, that's certainly not standard practice.

Wishiwasonholiday1 · 19/07/2018 09:04

I hope you're feeling better today. I've been doing a part time doctorate for years, submitted 2 years ago and then it turned out my tutor advised me really badly, thesis got sent back, university apologised for his errors and l was given a new, excellent, tutor and am not paying for the extra time.
It was hard telling people it had failed submission, I cried for a day, picked myself up and started rewriting. I'm in my last 2 months now and although it's been a nightmare, it'll be worth it in the end.
Don't worry about telling people, they tend to be more sympathetic in RL!
It's a rubbish situation but you'll be ok and you'll get there 💐

ScrumpyCrack · 19/07/2018 10:58

Well done for getting through to student support and for submitting the complaint, OP.

Soon this will all be a distant memory and you’ll be telling the story as you await to graduate your masters Smile

For my undergraduate degree, I went through a stage of writer’s block and would use tricks to get myself started. One of them was to use a silly title, which I’d change once I’d got going. It helped it feel less formal so I could write without the pressure of knowing it would be submitted iyswim.

Anyway, one assignment was on our monarchy which was our tutor’s favourite topic. She was a staunch royalist and never missed an opportunity to tell us how we should respect our Queen. The tutor famously lost her shit when a student asked what she thought about the theory that the royals were all lizards and we were ordered never to speak of it again.

So of course I titled my draft assignment ‘The Misadventures of Queen Elizardbeth’ and forgot to change it before submission Blush

ChilliMum · 20/07/2018 09:49

@huggybear I have no idea, I assumed it was standard if you are borderline and you get a viva? A friend was also given a viva but he was just above the 2.1 mark so I just assumed that everyone on the border got one??

As for the assignment yes it was on the content sheet but not the dates. It was specific to something they had done in the class and the assignment given early on in the course and in the class. It carried 50% of the final Mark for the module. I only realised my mistake when another student said she had got 100% for the assignment and had therefore already passed the module without sitting the exam! I spoke to the module lecturer and was allowed to submit late but obviously got a capped mark.

yorkrose · 20/07/2018 10:40

I'm so sorry op. We all make mistakes some bigger than others and hopefully we learn from them.

I know it's hard at the moment but try not to let it get you down too much, take a deep breath and look forward.

Sending you lots of best wishes.

exWifebeginsat40 · 20/07/2018 11:22

i once sent a giant ship off on a round-the-world cruise without any waiters, and no way of getting any on board for the first 8 days.

the horror. do your employers know yet? because, there might not be this much stress for you about delaying your Masters for a year if you can come up with a solid plan for that year as an alternative?

Ippydippyskyblue · 21/07/2018 23:18

Oh crikey. Well, first thing. These things happen. I’d speak to student support and your tutor ass soon as possible and explain situation. In my experience you can’t hand in a note explaining mitigating circumstances or illness after you’ve been given your mark. You have to hand it in before the examine to your tutor on the day of your exam but before the exam.
Best policy is to see what student support/tutor say, then take it from there. If there is no way it can be sorted out, then honesty is always the best policy with your employer. And don’t leave it too long. Get it sorted out as quickly as possible, for your sake. Then you know where you stand. You can’t be the first or the last!
