Last night I saw a mouse run from the living room into the kitchen and under the fridge!! Only moved here 2 months ago, not seen anything in that time, no droppings anywhere cupboards etc
The back alley has communal bins, do you think it could be just one that's come in, back door has been open past few days!
I have the things!!!

Hopefully it will be outside by now as they only tend to come into house when it's cold (hope I'm right!!)

Bumble1830 · 17/07/2018 08:59

I would move... I did move, my house backed onto a farm, always had the bloody things scurrying in.. So I moved. I hate hate Hate them

Apehouse · 17/07/2018 09:00

Get a cat or put mouse poison in strategic places,

Lollipopstick1 · 17/07/2018 09:03

I'm renting so in contract or I would be moving (are mice a reasonable excuse to break contract) moved from previous house because of mice and Landlord assured me he'd never seen a mouse but he would wouldn't he!!

I wouldn’t bother with a cat they rarely work as a deterrent (google) I have them every winter I absolutely hate them too I seen one when my baby was 2 months old and had a major break down about it put various traps down around the house and the trap caught one it wasn’t very pleasant looking back I wish I would have got the kind of trap that doesn’t kill them but catches them they can be released very far away from your house. It’s possible it’s a one off but try keep your doors closed and making no judgement on your house but be sure not to make the place even more inviting for them ie no crumbs on floor etc. Try and be rational though the mouse has no interest in coming near you and is probably petrified of you atleast it’s not a rat Shock I nicknamed mine mr mouse to try and see him as cute haha

Lollipopstick1 · 17/07/2018 09:12

I have a baby, but she's 1!! What about the glue traps? DH said they work but it seems a bit mean

We had mice this year for the first time in 20 years.

We caught one in a humane trap and let it go. Other than that they were in the bedrooms where the kids were taking food in, so we’ve banned food from bedrooms. And we have dogs so they keep them away from the kitchen and they seem to have gone now.

I think it’s food their after so don’t leave any laying about.

EdithWeston · 17/07/2018 09:16

Sometimes you do get just one that has run in.

That's why I n the old days (when ''twas all fields) our council would only send out pest controllers after a second sighting or if there were droppings.

Now they seem to have cut all pest controller service for 'just' mice, so it's up to you. I probably would wait for one more sighting, but if you are more worried, then get either traps or poison down today. Or get a terrier!

No, mice aren't a reason to end a rental contract. Persistent refusal to deal with any sort of vermin might be. You need to get in with it yourself, or ask LL to sort, and give a reasonable amount of time for traps/poison to work before escalating.

implantsandaDyson · 17/07/2018 09:16

To be realistic it's quite unlikely that this is one mouse that has taken a wrong turn and ended up in your house - I bloody hate them too but it's not going to disappear itself and they are not solitary creatures. I'd be giving a pest control company or the council (they're inundated apparently at the minute) a call and get it dealt with quickly. Make sure whoever comes out, comes back to do a recheck a few weeks later.

Somewhereovertherainbow13 · 17/07/2018 09:20

Don’t get a cat, our cat actually brought a mouse into our house yesterday played with it for a while and then left it so now I have a tiny mouse trying to escape my house and 2 cats that cant catch it. I can’t bare the thought of a trap but I can’t have it living here forever

coolncalm · 17/07/2018 09:27

I hate them too.The ones that come in my house (usually in the winter) are little field mice. My dh thinks i over react because i usually scream when i see one. Yes i know "they can't hurt me"and yes i know "they're more frightened of me than i am of them"doesn't do anything to calm me.

Firsttimemum892 · 17/07/2018 09:28

I’ve read about glue traps and mice will chew their own limbs off to escape them you don’t want that, get some poison but bare in mind with poison they will find somewhere to hide and die and the smell will be bad. You can buy those plug in alarms we have one and I haven’t seen one since. Check round the house and cover any small holes with wire wool they can get in the tiniest of holes

roseblossom75 · 17/07/2018 09:32

I sympathise.
We live right by fields too and I'm always wary about leaving the back door open!

I remember when I was a child (different house) we used to regularly get them in the house and I would just scream!!
We even had one turn up in the kitchen drawer once!!! No idea how it got in there!!!

Claire90ftm · 17/07/2018 09:37

No, please don't use a glue trap. I hate the thought of the poor little thing being killed like that. Or at all, if I'm honest. Try a humane trap. Make sure you Google what they actually eat (I think some peanut butter us what I read).

Firsttimemum892 · 17/07/2018 09:41

Yeah they love peanut butter that’s what I put in the trap

Lollipopstick1 · 17/07/2018 09:44

Been looking at them plug ins.. do they work??
And I also scream, I've turned the place upside down and and find any droppings

Crazybunnylady123 · 17/07/2018 09:45

Please don’t murder the mouse. Use a humane trap and release it. There is no need to kill animals, they have just as much right to live as us!

Shumpalumpa · 17/07/2018 09:53

What about the glue traps? DH said they work but it seems a bit mean

A bit mean? Hmm

They are cruel and inhumane. What will you do with the caught mouse? Leave it to die a slow death or try and remove it from the glue, ripping its skin and flesh off?

The snap traps are better.

Weedsnseeds1 · 17/07/2018 09:56

Don't use glue boards, they'll re horribly cruel and you still have to kill the mouse yourself once it's attached.
The kindest and most efficient method is a snap back trap.
Poisons are quite slow acting and also impact non-target species such as owls if the mouse goods outside to die.

IamEarthymama · 17/07/2018 10:00

Please don't ignore the lone mouse!
DW and I did and we were overrun.
I had stocked up on Easter Eggs for the many children in our family and friendship group and hidden goodies in a bag at the bottom of the bed
Woke up to rustling and chomping, had to grab the bag, DW opened all doors and I flung bags onto the garden.
We couldn't face bedroom so slept in guest room. I was sat with cuppa and Kindle when another little bugger crept under the door. Kindle went one way, Cup the other while we dived out of the room
We spent the night on the sofas, making sure blankets and throws were tightly tucked in around us and googling methods in dealing with this mouse invasion
We chose Plug in Mouse Repeller And while waiting for it to be delivered got rid of all open packets of food, pasta, rice etc
DW opened a cupboard to see one cheeky chappie chewing on a piece of penne. They gazed at one another and DW gently closed the door.
We threw out so much food and spent so much on cleaning products.

The plug ins are great, if only they could be used on our Riverside allotment to scare away the rats.

Lollipopstick1 · 17/07/2018 10:06

Can't find any droppings*
I'm on edge sat on the sofa waiting for one hahaha

Landlord has given me the pest control number! Didn't know British Gas did pest control?!

ForgotwhatIcameinherefor · 17/07/2018 10:54

I’ve caught mice in snap traps on numerous occasions only partially - so had a mouse dragging a trap around!

LunaMay · 17/07/2018 11:21

@ForgotwhatIcameinherefor me too, not nice. I've posted before about my drama when i had baby mice literally turning up everywhere (bath, washing machine. cup of tea).

These days i still find snap traps better but i have the packets of poison theyre meant to chew through under the fridge behind the washer etc. just in case.

Have you pulled out your fridge to see if there any droppings or bits of food/rubbish dragged underneath? Not an unusual place for them to nest.
