First England Hosepipe Ban! AIBU to think that some people are really selfish?

The first England hosepipe ban this year comes into force for United Utilities users from this Sunday. Despite this ban nearly all the comments on one post are saying if their kids want a swimming pool they will use the hosepipe to fill up the pool! AIBU to think that this is really selfish of people to fill up a swimming pool for their kids when the water will be wasted soon after the kids have used it?

All these posters condemning those selfish water-wasters - and how many threads are there on MN where the posters brag about having the washing machine on 3 times a day? Washing sheets and towels every single day? Anything even breathed on gets chucked in the washingmachine.

And the thread about showers v baths - so many posters have both! A bath then a shower - to 'rinse off the residue' Angry (in which case, why not just the shower?)! We have NO IDEA of the value of fresh and clean water in this country.

So no, the selfishness of twats 'needing' a swimming pool/paddling pool doesn't surprise me.

Water is liquid gold! Don't throw it away.

there's a slight difference between an unnecessary green lawn and having clean laundry.

I know there are some posters who manage with 1 load of laundry every 2 weeks for a family of 8 probably the ones who can make a chicken last for the same amount of time but we are not all in that desperate stage just yet Grin

Re: brown lawns -

Grass goes dormant. Don't worry if your lawn has gone all brown and dead looking - just leave it alone, don't mow it or put anything on it. When it starts raining again it will re-green. Mine was completely crispy and awful looking, after 2-3 days of rain (am in the NW) it's come back to life again.

LizzieSiddal · 18/07/2018 08:41

People should take photos and report those who regularly use a hosepipe, when there’s a ban.

Sundance65 · 18/07/2018 08:51

I always have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand we are all part of the natural world and need to preserve water etc etc

However whilst water companies fail to stop leaks and invest in good water management in order to maximise profits to shareholders.....

Plus whilst what water we have is prioritised to industries to make commercial crap we use and dispose of and could all live without....

Some industry of course should get priority but this seems another typical case of blame the individual for being selfish whilst allowing business to keep behaving however they like under the guise of keeping the economy working

GameOfMinges · 18/07/2018 09:10

There is a middle ground between one load of laundry every fortnight and clean sheets every day though...

AlphaBravo · 18/07/2018 09:16

The NW has such big issues because the local councils are all c*nts and allowed reservoirs to be used as brownfield sites for new houses. Without replacing them.

Everyone in the country should be on a water meter and the water companies should be fined for the amount of water lost through shit infrastructure.

glueandstick · 18/07/2018 09:23

My water butt is dry. We’re saving water in the house but I’ve filled our paddling pool right up. It means the child can play in it whilst it’s left for a couple of days to dechlorinate before I use every last drop for the vegetables over several days. I’ve even had tk fill the water butt from the hosepipe too. I’ve used no more water than if I had used a bucket but it took a fraction of the time.

The lawn is fucked apart from a patch that I tripped and poured a bucket full over.

Next door is washing his car every other day. And watering the lawn. 🙄 thankfully no hosepipe ban here but heading that way.

have you really read about posters washing their bedsheets every single day? I suppose it's not impossible, but who has time for that. I already run 2 or 3 loads a day, that's more than enough Grin

Jorah · 18/07/2018 09:52

People that water their lawns are idiotic. Grass always comes back.

MyDcAreMarvel · 18/07/2018 09:57

No read the whole thread but it’s not from
this Sunday it’s from the 5th of August.

GameOfMinges · 18/07/2018 10:21

I've read people on here claim to katri0na, although one never knows who's bullshitting and maybe I just walked into a competitive cleanliness/filth thread! I'm intrigued to hear how you get 3 loads a day though? Do you have a bed wetter or someone in the household whose work involves getting minging? Or lots of children!

FeralBeryl · 18/07/2018 10:42

Wow did anyone hear in the news yesterday that UU are losing 430 MILLION LITRES A DAY in unrepaired leaks?
I do my bit, I will continue to do my bit but fucking hell thats a lot of water to be in the wrong places Shock

Katri0na · 18/07/2018 10:53

GameOfMinges
laundry adds up quickly, roughly it must go like this: bedsheets are at least 3 loads a week (all changed only once a week, but don't all fit in one machine), towels 3 loads a week (again, i don't have an industrial one)
Add at least a couple of black, a couple of white, a couple of colour loads for uniforms/clothes/sport gear and that doesn't include the dog baskets.

Any child sickness and it's a couple more loads. Then you have sofa covers 2 or 3 times a year, curtains ... I only sent suits to the dry cleaners, everything else go in the washing machine at some point.
Not competitive laundry, just day-to-day stuff.

TheSerenDipitY · 18/07/2018 11:27

for those of you with gardens you can get an extension for the outlet pipe and direct it to buckets or drums and then use the grey water for the garden, here in NZ and i think Aus does it too, you can have a rainwater tank connected to the down pipes to collect rainwater for gardens and you can also have a grey water tank connected up for the washing machine and possibly even baths and showers, some folks have a set up with soak hoses over the lawns and along garden beds and its set so when the tank gets to a % full it auto drains thru the soak hoses until it is at % level ( all decided by where they place the outlets etc) so it is an option if you are having regular water shortages, my mum has 4 set up and my aunt has 2
