Jilly Cooper time

It’s that time of year again - when I want to be a character in a Jolly Cooper novel - and only eat orange and steak for a week so I can squeeze into a too tight dress with a stain I’ve artfully covered with a brooch, after I have drenched myself in scent so I can get off with a dangerous drunk mysterious man who is loaded with cash and will whip me away to San Tropez, where I will only have an old bathing dress with moth in the seat which I keep falling out of. There I will meet a loveable old lech covered in Man Tan and flirt wildly while getting tight after too much gin.

My favourites are
Rivals
Riders
and Harriet

I probably like the girls names one best but they are not long enough to absorb oneself in for a week. And they don't have RC-B in

0range99 · 17/07/2018 18:08

And IRL I deliberately bought myself a new massive navy blue bath sheet

holycityzoo · 17/07/2018 18:36

Grimbles poor Tory and her 11 stone bulk she must have been huge!!!Hmm

Thisnamechanger · 17/07/2018 18:37

Perrier don't make you Merrier.

Thisnamechanger · 17/07/2018 18:39

Imogen was an awful drip.

PineappleLava · 17/07/2018 18:42

I got into uni on the basis of my love of JC.

Storminateapot · 17/07/2018 18:44

A ravishing man will sweep you into his arms, groan 'Christ, you're beautiful' into your hair.....

..... then spoil it all by calling you 'Buttercunt' 🤮

Storminateapot · 17/07/2018 18:46

I re-read my ancient & battered 1980's copies of her 'name' series for the nth time again recently. Delicious but oh my word so sexist & dated! My favourite is Octavia even though she is awful.

perdiesmum · 17/07/2018 18:59

Love this thread!

She says purrr - d - it- uh. Not Purr- deee- tah.

Just for the record - the audio book pronunciation is right. I won't flounce from the room tossing my glorious blond mane of hair about it though. I'll just toss back another glass of chilled Chablis whilst waiting for my handsome and rakish husband to come home instead! Smile

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 17/07/2018 19:05

I liked Bella best. And Rivals. Scared to re read incase I don't love them quite so much.
Am gutted about rcb cheating on taggie. Think she should officially cancel that book and have another crack at it.
What exactly is fernet branca? From my childhood reading, all I know is yhat ot cures hangovers.

I longed to be a grown up and live in a Jilly Cooper world - have to say that adilt life has proved disappointing! Grin

Storminateapot · 17/07/2018 19:17

I always assumed fernet branca was like posh alka seltzer, but it's actually a sort of liqueur I think.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 17/07/2018 19:31

I feel I should buy some to test it Wink

toomanycompartments · 17/07/2018 19:46

She does write invitingly about getting drunk, doesn’t she? Off to google fernet branca!

vampirethriller · 17/07/2018 19:52

I'm sure there's a book called Cooking with Fernet Branca...

DeepInFrance · 17/07/2018 19:54

Fernet Branca is a massive-thighed, hair-tossing, Argentinian polo player.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 17/07/2018 19:54
Grin
Pinkyponkcustard · 17/07/2018 19:56

How do you even give someone an old fashioned look? Wink

I shall also never forgive her for letting Rupert cheat on Taggie and while she was ill!

I’ve defo read too many threads on the relationships board here cos when Taggie just forgave him I was screaming WTAF!! LTB Taggie!!

WittyJack · 17/07/2018 19:58

Personally I don’t need jilly time to look ravishing, with my mane of white blonde hair flying around my narrow tanned shoulders, and my glittering sapphire eyes flashing on both sides of my long Grecian nose.

DP is the same, with his treble barrelled surname and his broad shoulders tapering to his narrow waist and snake hips, which thrust erotically as he drives rebellious stallions around the estate that he inherited from his grumpy and disreputable father.

bookworm14 · 17/07/2018 20:01

Be right back - just spraying some Amarige on my bush.

bookworm14 · 17/07/2018 20:03

Must be prepared in case my rakish French-horn-playing lover decides to bonk me on a glockenspiel.

Sofiathefirst2346 · 17/07/2018 20:06

Eeek I’ve not read mount yet so I’ve just downloaded it on audible!!!!

vampirethriller · 17/07/2018 20:06

Heavens, is that the time? I was supposed to have exercised the greyhound, made chutney from mounds of onions and bonked the stable hand by now. Looks like it's going to have to be the local pub for dinner, where thankfully the chef is amazing and will whip us up beef bourguignon in no time.

Spudlet · 17/07/2018 20:09

If anyone needs me, I shall be hosting a dinner party and pretending that I cooked the food when actually I hired a caterer. Hope she doesn't get goosed by a guest!

Sallycinnamum · 17/07/2018 20:09

Oh lordy I love JC. The heat reminds me of The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous when it rains on Paradise after a heatwave and Lysander and co are drunk dancing in the resulting downpoar. Bliss!

Waitingforsherlock · 17/07/2018 20:10
