To think my cat has a problem

My DF recently rescued a lovely cat, he's is brill [cat and DF, both fabulous] and we've been feeding him Felix which he scoffs happily. DF bought a multi pack of Sheba, well, pussycat won't touch it. It's a gender thing I'm certain. AIBU to insist that he eats it, female name or not?

No it's just a cat thing.

This week my lot love Whiskas. Last week it was the food of the devil and I threw at least a pouchworth a day away after it had sat uneaten since morning. I have only discovered this because last week they loved Felix, and today I threw about a pouchworth of that away too......

CigarsofthePharoahs · 16/07/2018 19:16

Mine randomly went off wet food altogether. Had been fine for ages, then just stopped touching it.
She had just kibble for ages but has now discovered a taste for tinned sardine.

PanPanPanPing · 16/07/2018 19:20

Are you both new to being 'cat slaves'?! If you are, then you're going to have to learn that the cat will change his/her mind on an hourly basis about what he/she will eat!

IgamOgamJones · 16/07/2018 19:40

I'm a long time cat servant but this gender food thing is silly. My man chucks it and gives him Felix! Pfft, soz puss but you'll have to either eat the girl food or let it go mouldy [or wait 'til DF gets home and chucks it, but that's not for a few days].

Your cat is training you! I've had 65 years of thorough training by an assortment of mogs. A cat won't eat something it doesn't like, come hell or high water, it would rather starve. Insist is something cats do, not their humans.

It's not a gender thing, it's a preference thing. Mine won't eat Whiskas under any circumstances, I've had quite a few who don't like Whiskas. Sheba is tolerated once in a while, but Royal Canin Renal 26 dry is much his most favourite. For wet food he prefers Felix to anything else.

Can you swap the Sheba with another cat owner, for another food? Otherwise donate it to a rescue centre via the collection bin in a local supermarket if there is one.

Ollivander84 · 16/07/2018 19:48

Mine refused to eat anything once. Except for a disgusting cheap food I tried in disgust which was tuna and egg in aspic HmmConfused
He won't eat any supermarket brands, only natures menu and Lily's kitchen
Dreamies are pure poison but pork scratchings make him howl with delight

Sheldonoscopy · 16/07/2018 19:51

Pffft! I’d tell my kitty to get stuffed and get it down her!

IgamOgamJones · 16/07/2018 19:51

FeistyOldBat If he doesn't eat it by the end of the day I'll put it out for the hedgehogs. The new puss is lovely and settled in really well. He can have Felix, I know he's not put off by Sheba's name really.

Sometimes I wonder if they would genuinely starve until they got what they wanted.
And my conclusion was YES

If a roast chicken is cooked, forget about all cat based food for days. I should probably stop giving them roast chicken bits, but she gave me the eyes
No one can resist the power of the eyes (and the little paw Wink)

PanPanPanPing · 16/07/2018 20:04

"Pffft! I’d tell my kitty to get stuffed and get it down her!"

I take it you don't actually have a cat, Sheldonoscopy?!?! Grin Grin Grin

Theweasleytwins · 16/07/2018 20:19

My parents 3 female cats wouldn't eat it. They all love Felix

Sheldonoscopy · 16/07/2018 20:19

I have two panpan 😂😂 one has just come along today, currently trying to stop my little angels from making stupid noises at each other. We’ve made progress, big kitty is now on sofa with me and this little monster 😂

Sheldonoscopy · 16/07/2018 20:21

Mine are on Felix too though- plus tuna when I’m feeling generous. Not messing around mixing it up, if it works I buys it

SauvignonBlah · 16/07/2018 20:23

Cats are sods! Ours regularly changes her mind halfway through a box or even a sachet. Current favorite is Happy Shopper cat pouches which are cheap and nasty to me but she approves! She also likes our dogs food and intimidates them into sharing it. I figure that as she's a grand old lady of 19 she can eat what she wants now!

KindergartenKop · 16/07/2018 20:25

When I got this one I hadn't been a cat servant before. I read about all sorts of cats who would only drink out of crystal bowls and only eat one specific type of food. But mine eats anything and everything. Could he be a dog?

Susikettu · 16/07/2018 20:26

My cat was a rescue cat so you would think she would be happy about any food. Nope. Only dried go cat will do. No other brand. And not the flavour with red bits in. They remain uneaten. She also like human yogurt. I eat them out the house otherwise I get hounded.

smurfy2015 · 16/07/2018 20:31

Mine started out on own brand asda / tesco / sainsbury wet food first would only eat gravy ones,

then refused gravy and would only eat the jelly ones but would eat all the jelly and leave the meat slowly refused all those,

started off on dry kitten food then turned nose up at that then adult own brand asda / tesco / sainsbury again till it was refused,

she totally refuses the gourmet tins cos im trying to poison her obviously

not keen on whiskas unless its the creamy soup but if can get a better offer will take it, wont take a normal pouch of it

refuses sheba wee cat trays in foil cos not sure what she hates about them

she has turned down asda own brand cat soup like i was trying to kill her

Thankfully over last dare i say 6 months all she has had is gourmet mon petit sachets, will knock you over in the rush to get sheba cat soup or gourmet cat soup

dry food wise, touch wood at the minute she is taking go cat again for me but if can get it and sees them coming in shopping she will stop it and refuse till she gets purina one / perfect fit (i buy all these on offers) when the bag is empty she has to see its gone by sticking her head in the bag and licking the inside and then will go back to previous dry food

She doesnt know what human food tastes like and that she might like it as would try to steal mine and its not good for her as she would like

Treats wise - asda / tesco own brand are perfectly fine cos I call them dreamies (she cant read the bag but knows the sound of it)

Wasnt keen on felix food at all and not even the fun sauces on a saucer down to her as a treat

Natural nosh treats - she would kill me to get at them if i got them again (i will for her xmas stocking) :)

So by that run down on food, you can see as a cat she isnt fickle at all and obviously as her human im trying to poison her

Malibucyprus · 16/07/2018 20:34

The Queen of our house can be a fine mouthed madam too, some weeks she loves Whiskas, others she’ll turn her nose up, she adores the Gourmet soups, but they’re a treat, won’t touch Felix, has fads on dry food (but only as a side dish of course) and God forbid if it’s been down for more than 5 minutes! In the bin it goes! How dare I serve her stale food Hmm
Anything for her majesty though.....!

Babdoc · 16/07/2018 20:35

It is Sod’s law of cats that they will go off a particular brand of food they’ve eaten happily for months, just after you have bought an expensive three month supply of it..!
All cats follow this law. Along with the one about rotating in a circle while vomiting, for maximum carpet coverage. And the one that states they must only strop their claws on the newest and most expensive piece of upholstered furniture in the house, while ignoring their specially purchased fancy scratching post.
And that any mice brought in from the garden must be released alive into the kitchen and allowed to escape behind the built in washing machine, for maximum annoyance.
And yet - we still love our cats to bits!

torthecatlady · 16/07/2018 20:41

@Babdoc "Along with the one about rotating in a circle while vomiting, for maximum carpet coverage." Had me snorting and nodding in agreement! GrinGrin

IgamOgamJones · 16/07/2018 20:45

OH hahahahah
smurfy2015 sounds like you know exactly what your cat likes, I almost cried reading that.
Babdoc those are the actions of normal happy cats omg hahahahahahahah
Jack [the cat] knows what dreamies sound like, {ha, yeah, just like all the other treats} and knows how special he is to have them, however, he is currently stalking a blackbird {which flew away[obviously]} and rubbing his scent onto the only upstanding blade of grass in the garden.

IgamOgamJones · 16/07/2018 20:46

Oh! He just came back inside to have a crap in the cat litter tray, lovely!

OP posts:
smurfy2015 · 16/07/2018 22:17

@Babdoc totally agree and yet for all the times I'm trying to poison her with cat food

She is perfectly happy to bring a small bird (to my dismay) into the house and chase it around a lot and spend the evening hissing at me and the window while she searches for what I have rescued and released as far as possible,

She will eat grass in front garden and the only 2 places there are rug/mats in shower mat and mat for muck at front door, but she is quite good at vomiting there or in my bed, which is where I am 95% of the time then licking it up (Envy not envy, and then coming up to try and give me a kiss of the head or nuzzle my ear usually after she has licked her arse too, Shock so i like swiping her with my hand and one of her new hobbies is chasing flies and/or wasps

so how dare i try and poison her with cat food, do i think she is a cat and im the human who gets to pay the bills and rent and food so she has somewhere to live?

Yeah thats it still love the wee buggar to bits

smurfy2015 · 16/07/2018 22:18

@IgamOgamJones Im under the paw

TheDairyQueen · 16/07/2018 22:31

Yep, totally agree with Babdoc. You are being "groomed" by your cat, plain and simple.
