I'm so disappointed, I grew up shopping at M&S snd as young adult still bought most of my clothes there. However for at least 10 years they don't seem to have anything to offer me (I'm in my 40's) apart from food.

Their Sparks card is a bad joke, I've got over 57,000 points from regular food purchases but to obtain any benefits I'm expected to log in and pick deals I'm interested in. Who's got time to do that before they go and buy a sandwich? I know Boots ask you check offers too but they also generously accumulate money on your card with every purchase which you can use to buy products. Sparks offers nothing at all, they get all the valuable data but customers get nothing of any use.
I foolishly bought school uniform for my 3 kids because it was a 20% off deal. Instead of delivering it in one or two large boxes they posted it to me with most of the items in individual bags which took up loads of space, I received 16 parcels in total! Having tried on the uniform and finding it far too large for my normal size kids I decided to return it and was amazed to find that in order to return it to the local Collect store I was expected to tear off a printed piece of paper and attach it on to each individual parcel! All the other retailers that I shop online with have sticky labels which are so easy to attach.
I rang customer services and asked if they could collect the parcels so that I don't have to use sticky tape to attach 16 labels on and they refused and were particularly unhelpful.
There was still a part of me that felt some loyalty to them and I wanted to call head office to let them know how frustrating it is to shop with them now. Well I found it impossible to contact them, there was a number online which kept me on hold for 8 mins before I gave up.
Any loyalty or wishes for them to get their act together so that I could shop with them again evaporated. I feel so sorry for their shop floor staff who will continue to lose their jobs as stores close through no fault of their own. Incompetent management teams for at least the last decade continue to treat their customer like idiots. The only way to have any contact with M&S is though the call centre and those staff appear to have no way of escalating customer concerns, certainly I was given very short shrift. If the Senior managers really want to turn the business around they need to stop tinkering and actually connect with real customers and lots of them. They need to know why so few people are buying their products now and actually ask them why themselves, maybe call 10 customers each once per week picked at random from their Sparks database.
I'm not sure why I'm offering them suggestions, I just don't care any more which makes me sad.

I love their jeans, they are a good fit for me and all my undies are M&S but they need to know who their audience is. Their clothes are, on the whole, lacking in style and by style I don’t mean frills and embroidery. I want from them good quality and classic clothes and I don’t mind paying for it. I would hate to see them go under, they are the linch pin of many high streets.

MikeUniformMike · 16/07/2018 19:15

I don't want to see them go under. I love M&S.
Could you take the clothes to a store to return them?

Theknacktoflying · 16/07/2018 19:18

I am a sucker for M&S - the food is quality, the beauty department has lovely stuff, the mens work wear suits the needs of my DH and school wear seems to fit my two ...
Returns and collections are a bit of a queue - but no worse than any other store ..

StealthNinjaMum · 16/07/2018 19:21

I think OP is having a hard time here, she has said that she doesn't want the shop floor staff to suffer but it is annoying having to tape up 16 items to send back and then being kept on hold for ages. Marks sizes are ridiculous and unpredictable and I would never buy from them online and mumsnet has had a hundred threads moaning about their bras being ill-fitting.

And don't forget they have made such a song and dance about their environmental values with Plan A - more so than any other retailer - I can't believe they can't find a greener system.

BonnieF · 16/07/2018 19:21

M&S won’t go under.

Their food is too popular and profitable for that to happen, although they need to work harder on ‘healthy’ & ‘free-from’ products. They are also still number 1 for lingerie & men’s office attire, I believe.

The rest of the clothing offer is a mess, though. M&S is still culturally obsessed with trying to be all things to all people. That may have worked for them in the past, but it won’t work in the future.

They need to decide, once and for all, who is their target customer and they need to focus on serving that customer far better than anyone else.

Eliza9917 · 16/07/2018 19:23

I love m&s. The food is lovely and their stuff is good quality. The sparks card has given me regular discounts - I read the emails and if I go in there to buy anything I log in on my phone and add them to the card. I got a discount on a rain coat and a swimming costume, as well as a couple of other things.

Dolphinswimmingupsidedown · 16/07/2018 19:24

Fair enough point to make. They’re not exactly making it easy for their customers, are they? It’s not hard. On the other hand, I used to live in the US and you could order online on a Friday and your entire order would be there on a Monday. Outstanding service. And you always get a good cup of tea in their cafes!

Undercoverbanana · 16/07/2018 19:26

Have you ever lost your job and not been able to pay your rent OP?

Donteatthekidssweets · 16/07/2018 19:28

Actually I have recently brought a few things from there after years of not even bothering to look. A few lovely bras half the price of my triumph ones and nicer and also school uniform. I found the returns quick and easy both in store and by post and customer service great.

ProperLavs · 16/07/2018 19:29

I think their shops are too big though. I can see them not being able to afford to keep those big barns of buildings afloat. If I am fed up with the pushing and shoving of the high street I always go and hide in out M&S ( Brighton) because it's virtually empty even on a Saturday afternoon.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 16/07/2018 19:29

While it’s odd that they sent sixteen separate parcels you don’t have to send them back individually. I sent back three separate items, from different orders, last week. One bag, one label, three returns forms inside the bag. I’ve got my refund already so there’s obviously not a problem doing it.

Donteatthekidssweets · 16/07/2018 19:30

Also the beauty bit is fab, they have some good brands now.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 16/07/2018 19:30

Marks & Spencer is going nowhere; I spend so much money there every week. I love shopping there, the shoes are gorgeous, the underwear is lovely and the sales are really good.

Has anyone else tried the mini cheese and onion muffins (3 for £7)? They are sublime! Grin

DonaldTrumpsDadNeededACondom · 16/07/2018 19:31

I'm in my 30's so not their target market, but my MIL loves them. She's be really sad if they closed

SoapOnARoap · 16/07/2018 19:32

What a nasty post

greendale17 · 16/07/2018 19:33

YABU- M&S are a classic British company.

Maybe try buying your clothes in the middle
aisle at Aldi

whensitmyturn · 16/07/2018 19:34

They will go under eventually as they are arrogant and have coasted along on their reputation and haven't moved with the times.
More and more redundancies are happening, I left a couple of years ago and Dh only a couple of months ago feel very relieved we are both out of there and have better job security.

CherryPavlova · 16/07/2018 19:34

They don’t deserve to go under (where would I buy my underwear) but their fashion buyer needs redeploying.

SantaClauseMightWork · 16/07/2018 19:35

I like them and wouldn't wish for them to go under. But I agree that their quality is going down considerably every year. Don't know the solution but they really do need to make an effort now.

PookieDo · 16/07/2018 19:35

I am in their demographic and I can’t afford to shop there. I love their food and they do great jeans and underwear but I have to shop in Primark and Aldi. Now and again I will buy something more special (like splash out on my favourite jeans that will last me a couple of years) for £35 but that’s about it. I just admire the food from afar!
I don’t think they should go bust but it doesn’t strike me as doing very well in my town. It’s always empty and the clothes in stock are total shit.

fairislecable · 16/07/2018 19:37

I love the food at M&S but now find it difficult to find clothing.

I found a dress that I had for 20 years ( in old wardrobe) it fitted perfectly the long length was 35 not 32 as it is now.

I think in order to keep costs down they skimp on fabric.

Whoever orders their stuff should have a look In Seasalt very little synthetic mostly cotton, yes it costs more but I am happy to pay for better quality.

GeorgeIII · 16/07/2018 19:40

Well M&S will go under like other stores because we all shop online. I’ve just bought cotton nighties from dam art. Ms don’t have cotton ones apart from minis. They are pretty crap imv nowadays.

birdsdestiny · 16/07/2018 19:42

No one shops in a place in order to keep people in jobs. So M & S needs to get their act together. I hate whsmith and the body shop, so I don't shop there. I won't be responsible if those shops go under. M & S have some positives but they need to listen to what their customers are saying or they will go. If that happens M & S will be responsible not their customers.

nooddsocksforme · 16/07/2018 19:42

The quality of their food -esp fruit and meat is miles better than anywhere else so I would hate to see them go under . Their clothes are awful however and I agree that they need to narrow their demographic there and go for it .

EdWinchester · 16/07/2018 19:45

I will agree the Sparks card is a load of shite, I ever bother getting mine out now.

But go under? Come on! It’s M&S!

I spend a fortune in there on food and flowers. My parents buy all of their clothes in there. It’s a British institution and I’d hate to see them go under.

It would be a huge loss.
