AIBU to think Marks and Spencer deserve to go under

I'm so disappointed, I grew up shopping at M&S snd as young adult still bought most of my clothes there. However for at least 10 years they don't seem to have anything to offer me (I'm in my 40's) apart from food.

Their Sparks card is a bad joke, I've got over 57,000 points from regular food purchases but to obtain any benefits I'm expected to log in and pick deals I'm interested in. Who's got time to do that before they go and buy a sandwich? I know Boots ask you check offers too but they also generously accumulate money on your card with every purchase which you can use to buy products. Sparks offers nothing at all, they get all the valuable data but customers get nothing of any use.
I foolishly bought school uniform for my 3 kids because it was a 20% off deal. Instead of delivering it in one or two large boxes they posted it to me with most of the items in individual bags which took up loads of space, I received 16 parcels in total! Having tried on the uniform and finding it far too large for my normal size kids I decided to return it and was amazed to find that in order to return it to the local Collect store I was expected to tear off a printed piece of paper and attach it on to each individual parcel! All the other retailers that I shop online with have sticky labels which are so easy to attach.
I rang customer services and asked if they could collect the parcels so that I don't have to use sticky tape to attach 16 labels on and they refused and were particularly unhelpful.
There was still a part of me that felt some loyalty to them and I wanted to call head office to let them know how frustrating it is to shop with them now. Well I found it impossible to contact them, there was a number online which kept me on hold for 8 mins before I gave up.
Any loyalty or wishes for them to get their act together so that I could shop with them again evaporated. I feel so sorry for their shop floor staff who will continue to lose their jobs as stores close through no fault of their own. Incompetent management teams for at least the last decade continue to treat their customer like idiots. The only way to have any contact with M&S is though the call centre and those staff appear to have no way of escalating customer concerns, certainly I was given very short shrift. If the Senior managers really want to turn the business around they need to stop tinkering and actually connect with real customers and lots of them. They need to know why so few people are buying their products now and actually ask them why themselves, maybe call 10 customers each once per week picked at random from their Sparks database.
I'm not sure why I'm offering them suggestions, I just don't care any more which makes me sad.

Just don't shop there again.
YABU- think of the unemployment! People need their jobs to pay the bills and put food on the table and just because you had a dodgy time with them, doesn't mean you should want them to go under.

Excellente · 16/07/2018 18:43

I always say that if I emigrated the one thing I’d miss most is the big Food Halls. I just love everything about Marks. Granted I don’t buy their clothes (underwear and baby clothes are lovely though) but I would genuinely be devastated if it went under.

ProperLavs · 16/07/2018 18:43

When you are in trouble as a business and competition is fierce you can't fuck about with customer service.
I will only buy from online stores that make it easy for me to return goods and are easy to contact if i have a problem.
M&S will go under unless they can get their shit together, but suspect they won't and will head the same way as BHS. They are way over-priced too.

SheSparkles · 16/07/2018 18:44

YABU for signing up for the sparks card...when it was launched I wondered if I was missing something because I couldn’t see it being of any advantage to the customer

Fintress · 16/07/2018 18:46

YABU. I use the Sparks app on my phone, very easy to load the offers, no logging in required after the initial one. I mainly food shop.

slashlover · 16/07/2018 18:47

I used to like M&S for longer length trousers. They launched a Curve range with longer length available, bought one pair and went to buy more but they were out of stock for almost two months.

Just went to look now and a few different styles are still out of stock in various sizes.

user546425732 · 16/07/2018 18:49

The Sparks card is a complete waste of plastic - i get points at my local M&S but it's a small one and I can't use the offers there so I've stopped using the card as all it does is give market research data in return for no benefit to myself.

Having a poor value for money loyalty card isn't a reason to want them to go under though.

swimlyn · 16/07/2018 18:50

YANBU OP

…no business deserves to go under…
Oh yes they do if they are as bad as M&S have been for many many years. They do not listen to customer feedback, and they run the company as if we are obliged to shop there.

I worked there for quite a while, and they were bad employers too. Awful petty people.

‘Tis for shame…

SilverySurfer · 16/07/2018 18:50

YABU. i love their food and re the Sparks card, how long does it take to log on and choose which if any offers you want? I've had some great bargains because of it.

I'm not a fan of a lot of their clothes but for things like t shirts and cashmere or wool cardigans, they are great.

The people who work in my local M&S are really helpful and kind and i don't want them to close for their benefit or mine.

Mumminmum · 16/07/2018 18:51

I don't understand the Sparks card either. We were in M&S to do a large shop and they persuaded us to get the card. So I went home and activated it and all of the welcome offers, which were quite good, were all only available for two weeks. I am not a effign shopoholic! If I have just shopped for clothes it will be couple of months before it is necessary again. So I just sat in front of my computer thinking "Thank you for nothing".

bigKiteFlying · 16/07/2018 18:51

I've order some school uniform and teenage bras from them - as only place I can get that sized bra for DD1 at any kind of reasonable price and only place that does cottonschool trousers and shirts for eczema prone DS at a reasonable price.

I've never had them send out multiple parcels and only time I had to send on-line brought clothing back - bras - they were very efficient.

So while I do think they could do better in many areas - I can't buy decent bras with them and can't find many clothes I like with decent quality - I'm very keen they don go under as I'd currently be stuck.

so YABU.

pumpkintree · 16/07/2018 18:52

Did you order separately? or one whole order?

BarbaraofSevillle · 16/07/2018 18:56

I use the app too. If you have time to write an essay ranting about the failings of m&s you have time to open an app every couple of weeks to look at the offers.

I mostly buy food in m&s and get money off all sorts of things I normally buy, free extra sides with the Dine In deal, that sort of thing. Definitely worth a few seconds effort IMHO.

Parker231 · 16/07/2018 18:56

M&S is no different from any other shop. If they don’t make money, they will close. I imagine the store closures announced are just the start. Some of the food is ok, although getting boring but it’s convenient to get milk and bread on the way home. The clothes are a joke!

StealthPolarBear · 16/07/2018 18:57

She you get to go to events and see the clothes before they're released to thw masses. I'd love to know if anyone actually considers that a treat

toolazytothinkofausername · 16/07/2018 19:00

YANBU! I'm with you OP! I think M&S quality is disgraceful and I cannot believe they are still on the high street!

m0therofdragons · 16/07/2018 19:02

I love M&S for dc and me. No idea why people are so down on it. They have good work wear, clothes for a variety of ages and great staple wardrobe items. My most flattering swimsuit came from their this summer. It's my go-to place.

Davros · 16/07/2018 19:02

I love M&S and would hate it to fold. I know lots of the staff in my local shop who've been there for years and remember my kids. I get emails from Sparks with offers and it's easy to choose offers, check them when you're out and about and use them.

FapandSnart · 16/07/2018 19:03

YABVU

If you have been lucky enough to have never been an employee of a retail business going under then you have no idea how horrendous it is to suddenly lose your job and your livelihood.

I think it is so wicked and spiteful to wish for this to happen and as a consequence thousands of people going through the misery of redundancy.

Redundancy1 · 16/07/2018 19:04

I've noticed a lot of shops pack this way, it's a problem and when I ask, they say the items are sent from different depots.

so bit harsh to have a go at M&S specifically for this, I think.

UbercornsGoggles · 16/07/2018 19:05

While I don't want to see them go under I do agree with OP about there being nothing for me clothes wise. I too grew up wearing a lot of their clothes, and shopped nowhere else for underwear and nightwear, but now find in my 40s that none of their various ranges are suitable for me. Autograph is ok, per Una is downright weird, everything else seems frumpy. I bought shoes there recently but only because they were quite cheap.

Kids wear is great, but very pricey compared to rivals.

And don't get me started on the amount of plastic packaging the food comes in (Plan A my arse).

There are definitely some issues, can't comment on customer service for online purchases, but I spend very little in there now compared to the past.

Angrybird345 · 16/07/2018 19:07

The app is good for choosing offers, though they can be hit & miss.

Parker231 · 16/07/2018 19:08

Overall I think the customer service and staff at M&S are good. Their problem is the quality of their products is now so poor, that shoppers are turning to places like Primark for lower quality clothing.

MoonsAndJunes · 16/07/2018 19:10

This is what you do -

  1. Put all items back in bags
  2. fill out returns form/s and put in top bag. Write note on form saying items are in separate bags.
  3. Tape all bags together up and down and across.
  4. stick one label on front

Alternatively, return to store for immediate refund.
