I am upset by it and it was rude.

I got told I’d be a knock out ‘if I lost some weight’ Hmm

I have gained weight and I’m not happy about it at all. I’m not very tall and to get to a healthy BMI I need to lose three stone.

I have decided to sign up for a VLCD as a starting point.

Aibu to ask for your support Smile

Don’t let the comment upset you but if your weight bothers you loose weight but not by VCLD.
I have let my weight get out of control these past 5-10 years (pretended it wasn’t happening and felt really miserable about it made excuses) and I was awkward about social invitations and moody about what I would wear etc.
Bottom line was I hated looking in the mirror and as I am also very tall and plus sized I struggled to get any clothes to fit. Anyway earlier on this year I booked a holiday aboard with some old friends (who are all very slim) for next summer. I don’t want to be a size 10 I would look like a skeleton but if I can shift 3-5 stone before next summer I know I will look and feel a lot better and be happier. I’ve joined a gym, got a FITBIT and I am watching what I eat and doing it on my own with sensible smaller healthier meals. I have now slowly lost almost two stone since feeling very fat and unhealthy in December. I still have a long way to go but I am feeling better and I have a bit more energy have bought some new clothes that aren’t black or navy blue for the first time in years and I am starting to accept more social opportunites and I am enjoying life.
You only get one life if you want to loose weight and the time is right for you do it sensibly for you.

ciderhouserules · 15/07/2018 13:47

Don't go on a VLCD - you'll just fuck up your metabolism and in a year you may be lighter, but I'd be surprised if you are not heavier.

Low carb, or low calorie. Not extreme low cal. Your body goes into 'starvation' mode and holds onto every calorie and gram of fat it can, thinking it is in famine. Then when you add a few more grams and a few more calories, they go straight into fat storage. And you are heavier than ever...

Do it slowly - after all, you put on the weight slowly; it's not going to come off overnight.

LauraMipsum · 15/07/2018 13:47

I'd be very nervous about a VLCD, a group of my friends did it together a few years back and all of them ended up with serious health problems ranging from gallstones to hospitalised with kidney issues. If it had just been one I'd have thought it was coincidence but it was five out of five of them.

I lost quite a bit on the Forks Over Knives whole-food plant-based approach and would recommend that, I lost weight and kept it off, and I felt fantastic.

AcrossthePond55 · 15/07/2018 13:49

Use a VLCD to 'jump start' your weight loss, maybe for the first 5-10 lb. Then slowly increase your calorie intake to a healthier weight loss amount.

NaiceHamble · 15/07/2018 13:52

This is the comment to kick start a healthy eating plan: I have gained weight and I’m not happy about it at all.

That is a fact. This - I’d be a knock out ‘if I lost some weight’ is just the opinion of someone pretty crass.

TwoBlueShoes · 15/07/2018 13:52

If you want the change your life for the better, focus on healthy eating and exercise. Being healthy is a lot more important than being slim.

I understand you’re upset by the comment, but whoever said that is an ass, and it’s not worth making yourself sick for the sake of someone who’s an ass.

Seasawride · 15/07/2018 13:54

You don’t want any fancy diets op.

Cut out carbs especially bread. Eat mainly salads with fish or chicken.

No treats at all or alcohol. Thats tough Wink

Exercise every day be that cycling running swimming etc. Build it up from 20 mins start.

It will fall off you.

ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 15/07/2018 13:56

Been there, OP!

Due to work stress I had very high - excessively high - blood pressure, which came to light in a routine check at work. I was sent to my GP right away. First thing my GP said was 'have you thought of losing weight?'

I was about 1.5 stones overweight , ie which I didn't think was a lot, but boy did that make me sit up and take notice. I made some lifestyle changes straight away, which I have sustained. I lost weight, but not quickly.

pinkdelight · 15/07/2018 13:58

"Today 13:19 changelife1607

Well, I’m planning on losing the weight quickly - that’s the point, really. Thank you."

Other people's point is that it's not a good idea - losing the weight quickly usually means putting it back on quickly too and can have bad side effects. But yanbu to ask for support to make a change in your life if this comment has galvanised you. The weight loss sections on here can be helpful.

Loonoon · 15/07/2018 14:00

I agree with people saying don’t ‘sign up’ to a VLCD. You will pay a lot of money to lose weight quickly and then put it straight back on again. If you no longer wish to be fat the way to achieve that is to make long term, sustainable lifestyle changes.

I speak from bitter experience, I’ve done it all over the last 30 years. Every diet fad you can name I’ve tried it only to end up up a year after each one, a few pounds heavier than I was when I started the last craze. At age 50 I ‘gave up’. I decided to eat and exercise for a healthy old age, not weight loss. I gave up weighing and measuring food and calorie counting, I ditched the 4 times a week gym habit and binned the bathroom scales.
Now I eat what I want but include full fat probiotic yoghurt every day and strive to get my five veg a day. I walk places instead of driving, I do a very slow yoga class every week and do 5 minutes of planking/press-ups every day. And guess what? With very little effort, zero stress and minimum expenditure I am looking better than I have for years. I put on a dress that I wore last year with Spanx and discovered the Spanx are no longer needed. Bikinis that I bulged out of a couple of summers ago are loose on me now.

Hillstreamloach · 15/07/2018 14:00

I'm not against it, but at 800cals a day the blood sugar diet is just a real food version of a vlcd. Most of the branded meal replacement vlcd are low carb, its just the same. Of course the difference is you get to eat real food and long term you could stick to the same recipes, just add more food, something most people wouldn't do with shakes.

TatianaLarina · 15/07/2018 14:00

To lose it and keep it off you need to a) lose it slowly and b) change your diet for good. Otherwise it will just pile back on.

bellinisurge · 15/07/2018 14:04

Lose weight because it's right for you. For what it's worth the most beautiful assertive woman I know happens to be obese. If she wants to lose weight, that's up to her.

Eesha · 15/07/2018 14:04

Tbh a comment like that would really spur me on. I do look so much better with less weight on my but I agree with other posters, try a slow, sustained route and you’re more likely to stick with it. I looked for tips on this site, so made my one meal a delicious one, drank tons of water, which in turn suppressed my appetite. I’m never going to be stick thin but it’s a journey. You should go for it and be the best you can be.

VanillaSugar · 15/07/2018 14:05

I did VLcD to lose two stone and I ended up putting back on 5. It was the worst thing I ever did. It's taken years for my metabolism to stabilise again. A school mum has recently dropped a lot of weight and I was worried that she'd done the VLCD. She has now told us that she has been doing Slimming World which is much more sustainable. She has lost 3 stone since January and she looks fab.

Time to get the Frylight out!

MinaPaws · 15/07/2018 14:07

People are saying no to a vlcd but suggesting Moseley's blood sugar diet instead. I thought that was a vlcd? Have I got it mixed up with the newcastle diet - 600 cals a day.

MikeUniformMike · 15/07/2018 14:09

OP, I think the person commenting was probably meaning that you are very attractive and have a good figure but could do with losing a bit of weight. It was tactless but some people are like that.
VLCDs generally don't work. You need to change your lifestyle.

Nothisispatrick · 15/07/2018 14:15

Well, I’m planning on losing the weight quickly - that’s the point, really. Thank you.

But everyone else's point is that you'll put the weight back on and potentially make yourself ill.

PeckhamPauline · 15/07/2018 14:26

Blood Sugar Diet is a VLCD. That's why people shouldn't take advice on such things from forums like this one!

PeckhamPauline · 15/07/2018 14:27

... Anything 800 calories per day or below is a VLCD.

Hillstreamloach · 15/07/2018 14:46

As I said in my comments earlier BSD is a VLCD and Dr Mosley freely admits it. He addresses the dangers of VLCD in his book and points to new research that shows they are less harmful than previously believed and can be useful especially in reducing the fat on the liver that leads to diabetes.
Another plus to BSD over the shake or meal replacement VLCDs I have thought of is that MM has already had great success with the 5:2 diet and he suggests this as a good next step for people having finished the 8 weeks at 800cal a day, but still wanting to lose more weight. So you have a good programme to move onto and one that can become a lifelong way of eating as many who have lost weight on 5:2 find they come to enjoy fasting and continue to do regular fasts for health and to maintain their weight.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/07/2018 15:14

The blood sugar diet does ‘t have to be 800 calories a day. I have done it since January and almost never do 800 calories, most days I have 1100-1200 and I’ve still lost 2.5 stones. The 8 weeks at 800 calories is for type 2 diabetics who want to reverse their diagnosis. Anyone else can just adopt a med style eating plan, 5:2 style or not calorie count at all. It’s the removal of certain key foods that will result in the weight loss.
