WIBU to cut my own thumb off?

Okay, yes, I would. But still.

I have loads of tiny little hole-like things all over the tip of my thumb that explode into blisters and then go away and keep coming back :( I already have psoriasis as it is so I don't know what it could be. It isn't enough of a bother to go poke a doctor, it's just really gross.

I had this (pompholyx) all over my hands at one point it's awful. I currently have a patch on my foot. Nothing seems to work on it for me, eventually it goes and I've never been to pin point a reason why. I'm going to give vinegar a go though, I'd never heard of that so thank you PP. Very interested to see that others think that this is a reaction to stress too. It would explain a lot.

Hellbentwellwent · 15/07/2018 14:44

Holy shit brigante that looks fucking sore Shock Gin

LakieLady · 15/07/2018 14:47

I get this in hot weather, and some hand creams trigger it, too.

I use Nelson's Hypercal cream (Holland & Barrett sell it) at the first sign and it works a treat.

Maelstrop · 15/07/2018 15:33

@LakieLady can you specify which of the creams Nelson do, please? I’m desperate!

Usuallytootiredbuthappyanyway · 15/07/2018 15:49

I get this (at least it sounds the same) on the top of one finger and around the side of the same hand. For ages I thought it was fungal and was self treating it with athletes foot cream but once I happened to be at the doctors for something else during an outbreak and they told me it was dermatitis and prescribed me a steroid cream (betnovate). Clears it up a treat in a few days.

BehindLockNumberNine · 15/07/2018 15:57

I get this too.
Currently on right hand and right foot.
Horrendously itchy.
It seems to be much worse this year? My psoriasis is threatening to break out too...

Steroid cream is not doing much. Going to try the vinegar, thanks for the tip!

DaisysStew · 15/07/2018 16:03

I have this OP and it’s so awful. I was in the kitchen before rubbing my hands on a rough tea towel because it was the only thing to stop the itch.

I find mine flares up when my hands are wet or sweaty (hard to avoid in this weather). Maybe try and get a mild steroid cream from the shops today to stop the itching and then go and see your GP next week.

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 15/07/2018 16:31

Mine looks exactly like TwoFs.

Flare ups seem to occur on holiday so a UV / water link for me too. Also periods of stress and they come up immediately.

Chesntoots · 15/07/2018 16:54

I had this on my hands a few years ago. It itched so much I would spend an age in the bathroom, scrubbing my hands under boiling water with my scrubby shower thingy until they bled.

I was working in a pub at the time and it turns out that peeling potatoes and handling seafood set it off, also if I was a bit sweaty.

It's bloody awful and uncomfortable, you have my sympathy.

PugwallsSummer · 15/07/2018 17:14

I get this on my feet - exactly like TwoFs! I had no idea it wasn't athletes foot 😳

Geekster1963 · 15/07/2018 17:35

Sounds like pompholyx eczema. I get horrendous outbreaks of this from time to time my fingers and palms get covered in awful itchy blisters that get quite big, then burst leaving raw open skin. They usually end up infected. The last time it flared up I ended up on oral steroids and it took six weeks of antibiotics to clear up the infection. I would go to the Doctors.

NeverTell9871 · 15/07/2018 17:40

Oh wow I also have this! I never knew what it was and figured it was due to itching my 'normal' eczema so much! Good to know it's an actual thing and my hand doesn't just turn in to a gooey itchy mess for nothing! 🙈

Flamingdinosaur · 15/07/2018 17:54

Yes I've had this for years. Especially on my fingers. I hate it, so itchy!

Catsingangs · 15/07/2018 18:26

I used to get this all the time, oh god the itch and scrubbing hands under boiling water just to make it stop for a moment, but of course it made it worse in the end. Hands would crab up, couldn't open them out and then the fissures painful as fuck. Thankfully it hasn't come back for a fair few years now.
YY to PP mentioning peeling potatoes as a trigger, I got this too. Also stress and heat seem to set it off. I realised the E45 cream I used for relief was actually making it worse, I think it was the lanolin in it, so I cut out all products with it in. Betnovate and Fucibet from the docs had limited effect. I found sea salt water worked wonders bringing down the inflammation and itch, also Aloe Vera gel stored in the fridge is really soothing.

ThatSortOfThing · 15/07/2018 19:43

I've been getting this on both hands and my left foot for about 20 years. It's SO itchy and often comes out of nowhere. Infuriating because the blisters are so tiny and yet they itch like hell.
I find that anything that gets the areas wet (washing up, swimming etc.) makes it worse. Natural aloe vera straight from the plant seems to help a bit, particularly with healing any cracks.

ToeToToe · 16/07/2018 00:05

Lots of people have mentioned betnovate - I was prescribed betnovate when I had a nasty psorisis/eczema patch all round my neck.

It was like a miracle - it went completely in 2 days - I'll definitely try it if I get another outbreak of the maddening thumb-itch.

Brigante, I do hope you heal swiftly - I really don't know what I'm moaning about - you can barely see mine with the naked eye. Your's looks like something out of a horror film Shock Thanks

Maelstrop · 16/07/2018 21:45

@ToeToToe ha, thanks, it’s the itch that drives me most nuts. Loving how my Gp said ‘Just take the rest of the week off, you finish on Friday anyway’. (I’m a teacher) He’s hilarious! I told him he’d feel sick if he looked, he refused to look at the big wound a few years ago when signing me off. Funny guy!

LakieLady · 16/07/2018 21:45

@ Maelstrom

It's hypericum (St John's wort) and calendula (marigold), in an orange and white tube. There are other makes, too, but Nelsons is the easiest to get hold of.

I use a tiny dab at the first sighting of a blistery bit, and it seems to stop it in its tracks. It's good for cuts and burns too, and for the residual redness from zits.

Sadly, it's not doing anything for the dreadful prickly heat on my collarbone ...

LakieLady · 16/07/2018 21:49

Brigante, your poor toe! That looks agonisingly painful. I had no idea it could get that bad. Flowers

LifeofClimb · 16/07/2018 21:59

Cetaphil works well. Wear cotton gloves to sleep (and in the day if you can til it calms down) and wear cotton lined washing up gloves if you need to wash up. Avoid detergents and soap and try to avoid washing hands too much.

It happens in the heat / humid areas.

Lots of gps aren’t aware of the condition, if you go to the docs be prepared to do your own research. Steroids don’t really help in my experience.

Snowysky20009 · 16/07/2018 23:18

Brigante9 you poor mite! That looks so unbelievably sore. Hope it heals quicklyFlowers

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 19/07/2018 07:09

Wouldn’t help with hands, but my feet are better if they don’t get sweaty - flip flops and talc at this time of year.
