WIBU to cut my own thumb off?

MsFrizzle · 15/07/2018 01:12

Okay, yes, I would. But still.

I have loads of tiny little hole-like things all over the tip of my thumb that explode into blisters and then go away and keep coming back :( I already have psoriasis as it is so I don't know what it could be. It isn't enough of a bother to go poke a doctor, it's just really gross.

This sounds extremely familiar! I think I have it on my feet, the itching drives me mad. The only thing I found that works is neat tea tree oil. Stops the itching and seems to help heal it quicker. Mines definitely heat/ sweat related too.

LotsToThinkOf · 15/07/2018 09:00

Oh my god thank you mumsnet!! I've been hiding my feet for the last 6 months, I've tried every fungal foot treatment out there and nothing has worked. I used a footner foot mask and after that all the little bubbles appeared under the new skin , I thought I'd unearthed a fungal problem which has been getting worse and worse. I have a nail issue so I thought it must have spread. I also have a patch on my hand which I thought was the same fungal thing. It makes my skin crawl.

Watching this thread closely, I need to get rid of it!

ChipInTheSugar · 15/07/2018 09:06

I used Betnovate on the patches on my fingers and feet yesterday and it's worked miracles! Think it's prescription only though.

SharronNeedles · 15/07/2018 09:11

I get this! Pompholyx!
Mines as a reaction to strong UV light so worse in the summer or when I've tried to cure nails

bestbefore · 15/07/2018 09:13

I she. This too! Horrid - am seeing a dermatologist again this week and will mention this to her. I find it so depressing and debilitating. My fingers are all bent because the skin breaks means I can't straighten them Sad

bestbefore · 15/07/2018 09:14

No idea what the start of my post means!

Thishatisnotmine · 15/07/2018 09:14

I have something very similar. They are like very small blisters which dry into a sort of psoriasis looking patch. I only get it in summer on my hands and it flares up after a couple of sweaty nights. Steroid cream gets rid of it.

EatTheChocolateTeapot · 15/07/2018 09:18

It could also be verrucas from your description. Go see your GP or pharmacist, to take the guess work out. Verrucas need treatment, eczema can also be helped with treatment.

Schroedingerscatagain · 15/07/2018 09:23

Just a thought for all of you sufferers, I was treated for this for years until by chance I was diagnosed coeliac the blisters stopped and it was then confirmed that it was actually dermatitis herpetiformis which is coeliac disease of the skin

The two present in a very similar way, anyone with an autoimmune condition is at greater risk of it being dh

DailyMailBestForBums · 15/07/2018 09:23

I've had it on my feet since I was a teenager. It always develops in response to stress, and the more I'm stressed, the larger the area that's affected. My GP used to prescribe a strongish hydrocortosil ointment but that only stopped the itching, not the blisters.

Fruitflylady · 15/07/2018 09:25

I have had this on my left foot for a few years; unbearably itchy bits of akin that turn into blisters. I’ve tried steroid creams etc. but recently read about vinegar and it worked! My foot is almost back to normal for the first time in years.
Make up a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts warm water, then soak the afflicted body part for 45 mins, twice a day. After soaking I used athletes foot powder (I heard that pompholyx excema has a fungal element). The itching was soothes straight away and the blisters gradually disappeared after a week or so. Give it a go; nice cheap remedy!

Thishatisnotmine · 15/07/2018 09:25

Thought I'd add a pic. Doesn't show the redness but you can just see the small pimples round the edge which will turn into dry thick patches like around my knuckle. I have to dry my hands really well, keep them moisturised. GP gave me Eumovate or something and didn't seem very concerned. So itchy though!

EduCated · 15/07/2018 09:30

I’ve had it worse than ever this year - normally get a few on each finger, but it all seems concentrated on one little finger this year, in a massive clump. It’s grim. Also had it on my little toe for the first time.

Mine seems to be worse when my hay fever is bad. Best thing is to moisturise the shit out of it.

LadyFidgetAndHerHandbag · 15/07/2018 09:32

Sounds like pompholyx to me too. Go to your GP for some steroid cream and ask for some softening cream such as epaderm too.
To help you should avoid getting your hands wet and soaps, shampoos, etc, as much as possible - buy some gloves to wear when washing your hair (disposable gloves are pretty cheap on Amazon) and use washing up gloves when cleaning.
It is itchy, painful and unpleasant but it is manageable. Try not to burst the blisters, they'll dry of their own accord.

haverhill · 15/07/2018 09:42

I had this as a child! On my palms mainly. I had no idea what is was. It eventually cleared up on its own.

ToeToToe · 15/07/2018 09:49

Yes, I get this too. It is so agonising that I want to chew my own thumb off. Occasionally I get a patch on my palm, but mostly it's my thumbs.

It comes and goes, and has eased a lot over the past few years (I think my case is relatively mild anyway) - heat and stress make it worse. If I have a very stressful time, it always erupts.

NormaNameChange · 15/07/2018 09:59

Eumovate is a steroid! You should get some relief with that, if not go back and ask for some Betnovate (stronger I think) or I use Elocon which is marvellous - they dont like prescribing that much as I understand its quite expensive. I get this on my hands and often have a strange patch on my neck. Definitely heat related for me

TwoFs · 15/07/2018 13:01

Oh my goodness - I have this too. It usually lasts a couple of weeks and any time I’ve tried to go to the dr about it it’s cleared up before my appointment. I have seasonal allergies so take antihistamines regularly and find they really help the itching to stop. It definitely only occurs in the summer months for me

Thishatisnotmine · 15/07/2018 14:16

Yay, other itchy, crusty skinned people!

TheSpottedZebra · 15/07/2018 14:26

I had this too for the first time this year. I've had normal eczema before but never this. And I tried all the usual suspects to help - e45, cetraban, hydrocortisone etc but nada. What I think helped, although obviously I can't be sure, is child's farm baby lotion. At least I could slather slather it on and it stopped the itching for a bit and it healed up soon after.

missmapp · 15/07/2018 14:28

I had something similar. I dabble them in a small pot of warm water with a bit of tcp. Stinks the house out but works every time

Brigante9 · 15/07/2018 14:33

Warning! Very bad pictures coming up! The ball of my foot was one big blister which kind of slid half off. The side of my toe was infected. I ended up in A&E where they took one look and admitted me and gave me IV antibiotics. I’ve never had any sort of eczema before so was clueless as to what it was. Now it’s all over my hands, itchy as hell, driving me nuts. So far, O’Keeffe’s Working Hands cream helps. I’ve just spent an hour showering and getting everything very clean, popping blisters and rebandaging the foot.

Brigante9 · 15/07/2018 14:34

Sorry, particularly horrible pictures.

zeeboo · 15/07/2018 14:34

Definitely sounds like Pomphlox. I have it and know exactly what you mean about genuinely wanting your digit chopped off.

TwoFs · 15/07/2018 14:38

Holy crap Brigante9 - that looks truly awful and painful Cake for you!
