To start being a Spurs supporter?

In my mid-twenties now, and so far, I’ve never really been into football. Neither are my friends or any of the rest of my family, apart from my Dad, who’s a particularly passionate Spurs supporter.

I loved watching the World Cup this year although, and this year was probably the first time I’ve ever got into it properly.

I’m really proud of the England team and thought they did particularly well to get so far this year. I definitely got caught up in how excited everyone’s been about the World Cup and reckon that this year is the first time ever I’ve probably watched a football match from start to finish. Sounds silly, but it’s really made me realise how exciting football is, and why people get so into it.

I used to be a (very) half-hearted Chelsea supporter (I can’t even remember why I started supporting them Blush) but lost interest a couple of years ago.

Would I be unreasonable to now start supporting Spurs? I think it would be a really nice thing to share with my Dad and I think they’ve become a pretty good team now.

Well it's up to you. It depends if you are likely to keep supporting them when they're not doing so well...

I love football; but I'd choose a team that you support for your own reasons; to be honest. It can be trying!

ginghambox · 14/07/2018 18:33

Yes Spurs have a losing mentality, stick to Chelsea.

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 14/07/2018 18:37

Support who you like! It makes zero difference to how the team does.

Babybearsporij · 14/07/2018 18:41

The Spurs lads did great for England. There are much worse teams you could support like Aston Villa, like me. DH is a Spurs fan, so COYS!

buildabear · 14/07/2018 18:42

Ywbvvvvvvvvvvvvu to support spurs😂 Man U would be a better team to pick but at least you didn’t suggest Liverpool... joking aside, go for it, football is fantastic and amazing to go to and/or watch from an armchair

HazelBite · 14/07/2018 18:43

This is an excellent idea!
(Can you tell what part of North London i grew up in? Grin)

Just to add I have been married for 41 years to an ardent Arsenal supporter, but we often go to each others games, I love watching live football its so exciting and the atmosphere is great.

Op check out the Tottenham new stadium online!

ConstanceVigilance · 14/07/2018 18:43

As a spurs season ticket holder, I would say yes, do it ! But you are condemning yourself to a lifetime of disappointment and what ifs!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 14/07/2018 18:46

Yes! Come join us Grin

Snickerdoodles · 14/07/2018 18:56

Aww thanks for your replies!

I had a feeling that people wplus probably say that I should stick with Chelsea 😂

I’m surprised that Spurs come across as the underdogs in British football when so many of their players did so well in the World Cup this year (Harry Kane, Kieran Trippier, Dele Alli, Hugo Lloris...). Can anyone explain this?

Also, I know this sounds a bit cringey, but my main reason for wanting to support Spurs (apart from having something to share with Dad) is that the team members all sound quite nice! They sound like a lovely team. And that’s something that I didn’t really feel with Chelsea. I know that sounds really weird to say!

Urgh Spurs. Team of bottle jobs and nearly men as proven in the World Cup. How that was an advert for the Spuds I don't know.

Sure, support Spurs but prepare for no cup finals or trophies, and the annual St Totterigham's Day!

Go for Arsenal. New team, new manager and goinf to be a way better team.

Poor OP having a Spuds supporting Dad!

ConstanceVigilance · 14/07/2018 19:29

What day was St Totterigham's Day this year, I’ve forgotten? Grin

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 14/07/2018 19:32

I had a naughty dream about Dele Alli. It felt a bit wrong since he's 13 years younger than me. But I might start paying more attention to premier league now.

Amanduh · 14/07/2018 19:36

Ew.

Amanduh · 14/07/2018 19:36

Just be prepared to be Spursy. Grin

HolyMountain · 14/07/2018 19:39

Spurs fans here, great to watch with brilliant players but my lot have , at times, wanted to kick the telly because Spurs can lose a game in the last two minutes.

I agree about finding a team that you enjoy watching , doesn’t have to be Spurs.

gunnergirl · 14/07/2018 19:40

be prepared to lose in a semi final then!!!!and never win anything loool

Amanduh · 14/07/2018 19:42

Seriously though, being a glory hunter is never reasonable. And Dele Alli is not ‘nice’ have you ever watched a game?! #dive

PsychedelicSheep · 14/07/2018 19:49

My dad is an ardent spurs supporter, as are my sister and brother. I personally don't give a fuck but I think you could do a lot worse, former underdogs with a bit more to them these days but not a big 'glory hunter' team like Man U or Chelsea.
