airlines should rethink cabin bags situation

AIBU to say I'm finding these days when I go on a plane;
-people bring too much cabin baggage and get arsey with the staff about it if told it's too much/suitcase too big etc

  • there's not enough space in all the overhead lockers for all the bags
  • people swing the cases around to get them in and out which makes it feel more cramped and dangerous that bags hit people on the head etc

I think airlines should go back to one charge for seats and that includes checking in a suitcase if you wish. So people can still bring cabin bags but have the option to bring a suitcase/check in luggage etc.

Hair straighteners - electric flat irons for flattening hair

Oh! I'm not sure if you can take them or not.

My hot tip is to see if Air France allows pre-purchase of hold baggage for the way back :).

I'm sure you will have a wonderful time. Will your son be meeting you at Paris CDG?

One tip is that all the toilets are on the ground floor in arrivals, so if you need to go, go before you go upstairs!

seasure · 16/07/2018 12:26

On the last few shot haul flights I've been on they've put my hand luggage with the checked in bags because of lack of space

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 16/07/2018 12:46

Planet Plug in straighteners will be fine, (not sure about the gas filled ones, never used them). I bought a pair from Babyliss with dual voltage especially for travelling. They have served me well.

I use one of the four wheel drive cabin bags as they are so easy to manoeuvre. I’ve also used softer type bags which are very squishable but they do require a bit more heaving about. Either will do if you’re travelling light.

I think your flight will be fine, Air France isn’t Ryanair. Have a wonderful time in Paris!

ThePlanetGoesOnBeingRound3 · 16/07/2018 13:16

Blush I didn't even think about dual voltage or travel adapters. Found a Babyliss pair in Argos, shall get those and an adapter plug Blush
I'm going to be an embarrassment abroad.
Don't need hairdryer or toiletries as stealth boast staying in vair, vair naice Hotel.
But I'll be brave and get a wheeled cabin bag leaving space to bring home goodies.

I have just checked ticket again, dear God, I'm hopeless!
I can take 12kgs hand luggage, 23kgs checked luggage and a handbag.

And sorry for hijacking (!) your thread @aaatozedd

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 16/07/2018 13:24

Planet just checking you don’t get the teeny weeny travel nano straighteners, I made that mistake, no good for anything but fringes! Grin

Mine are Babyliss Pro Digital 230.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 16/07/2018 13:26

Me too OP Blush

Ooooh yeah! That's a LOT of loot.

I gather you are primarily going to see your son, but now's the time to start researching the kind of shops you like :). These do not have to be all designer - some of the best shops are indeed markets, or supermarkets for foods or second-hand shops ...

aaatozedd · 16/07/2018 13:35

Hope it goes well theplanet Smile You could always take a rucksack, with a small handbag which will fit inside it if necessary?

I'm in the process of complaining to easyJet about the chaos that was the boarding process at both Gatwick and Prague last week. We paid for priority boarding and didn't get it due to ground staff incompetence. End result was that our hand baggage - all we needed for a four night stay - was miles away and the fast exit we should have got from being in row 1 was completely negated. £70 up the swanee.

aaatozedd · 16/07/2018 13:38

One thing that stands out from the thread is that some people now are taking a bring-on case but hoping it gets checked into the hold for free. Which might cause delays and means it feels unfair to those who've paid to bring a case in the hold, which is a bigger charge than carry on luggage. At least airlines could make it the same charge for either? then set strict limits on hand luggage and anything else goes in the hold. Or just a fare including a case like used to happen.
I'm amazed at the amount of people saying they've lost suitcases - I've never known anyone irl this has ever happened to except one where it was back in a few hours.

One of the main problems imo is that all of this causes the plane to miss its slot and therefore causes delays

People will always find a loophole.

AlpacaLypse, paying for Speedy Boarding is a waste of money many times. In Milan for example you have to board a coach from terminal to plane. The speedy boarders sometimes don't even get onto the coach first, let alone the plane and first dibs on the overhead lockers. And on one occasion there were more Speedy Boarders than there were ordinary passengers, so they were all in a long line to board the plane and I whizzed through the "plebs" line all by myself and was sitting there on the plane waiting for them!

LoniceraJaponica · 16/07/2018 15:28

“then I ended up paying more again for the Priority passenger thing so we could get some hand luggage on the plane - the size of the bag you're allowed to take on without buying the priority tickets was just too small for all the stuff we'd need for us and DD.”

I bought a bag to the exact maximum specifications for Ryanair under seat stowage, and it was pretty roomy. What exactly do you need to take that is too large to fit in such a bag? You can easily fit an iPad in one of these bags. If you are waiting for hold luggage at the other end anyway it seems pretty pointless to pay for priority boarding.

Amazon has some really good luggage that exactly fit Ryanair specifications.

Twotabbycats · 16/07/2018 16:16

It would make my job, the job of the cabin crew and security staff, and your experiences as passengers so much more pleasant if everyone would just put their damn stuff in the hold! But it won’t happen, because everyone thinks that they have a special reason for keeping everything they need for a fortnight in Greece with them at all times.

I have a lot of controlled (prescription) drugs in my (correctly sized) hand luggage, is that a special enough reason to want my bag near me and not to risk losing them in the hold? And is it unreasonable to want my crutches in the locker above my seat rather than down the other end of the aircraft, so I can go to the loo if I need to?

I hate the random bag snatching at the gate, I hardly want to justify retaining my bag by broadcasting its contents to every passenger in earshot at that point either...

Not at all. But you are the exception and not the rule.

I agree with you about cabin baggage. I fly long haul a lot and always marvel at people with loads of cabin baggage. As much as anything else, it just looks like a pain in the arse esp with all the security to-ing and fro-ing.

My absolutely favourite airline moment was when we use to travel in the bulkhead seats with babies, and we noticed people would stow their cases in the first overhead bin, then walk back 4-5 rows to their seat. Then when the seat belt light was turned off on arrival, they'd bolt to the front and be first then in the queue to get off. The only issue with that of course is that being in a bulkhead seat, there's no seat in front to stow stuff so you have to use that overhead locker. Flying on Singapore AIrline, the air steward saw us struggle to find a place to put our bags, and she pulled out the cases that were there and loudly asked who's they were and asked they put them near their own seats! It was a golden moment, I could have actually kissed her.
