airlines should rethink cabin bags situation

AIBU to say I'm finding these days when I go on a plane;
-people bring too much cabin baggage and get arsey with the staff about it if told it's too much/suitcase too big etc

  • there's not enough space in all the overhead lockers for all the bags
  • people swing the cases around to get them in and out which makes it feel more cramped and dangerous that bags hit people on the head etc

I think airlines should go back to one charge for seats and that includes checking in a suitcase if you wish. So people can still bring cabin bags but have the option to bring a suitcase/check in luggage etc.

If everyone just put bags in the overhead lockers wouldn't that make the plane top heavy?
I try to take as little as possible into the cabin - I find it fascinating/irritating when people jump up straight after take off to drag all manner of shit out of the overhead lockers.

CocoaGin70 · 14/07/2018 15:39

They are the biggest pain in the arse known to man, OP. I agree wholeheartedly. If they are going to insist on these suitcases going in the hold, then the lockers need to be locked upon take off and unlocked after touching down the other end. I nearly had my head taken off by a falling suitcase once and was furious - the man had got up about 15 times to rummage in it. They are deaths waiting to happen.

CocoaGin70 · 14/07/2018 15:39

*going on board" even

greendale17 · 14/07/2018 15:39

I take my valuables in hand luggage like my expensive professional camera and equipment. No way would I want to put them in the hold.

greendale17 · 14/07/2018 15:40

don't really understand the problem. If you only have a handbag or small rucksack, why not put it under the seat in front?

Er because that is where my feet go

lifeisabeachsometimes · 14/07/2018 15:42

If you are going on any city break in Europe the atmosphere is febrile, as passengers are trying to get on first so they can place their bag in the overhead locker.
We travel alot and have seen several times arguments breaking out and extra bags with nowhere to store them. It is putting the cabin crew under a lot of pressure.
Some people really take advantage by having one carry on bag and then a huge rucksack strapped onto themselves. There is nowhere to put it all. I have a very low opinion of cheapskates, if they can afford to fly they can afford to for one suitcase.

elfies · 14/07/2018 15:42

I think cabin staff on planes , and drivers on long haul bus trips ,should have lockers elsewhere and not be allowed to stow their gear in the overhead passenger lockers , then passengers bags may have more chance of fitting in

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 14/07/2018 15:43

It's not because people don't want to pay for checked baggage - they don't want to wait for it to come through at the other side.

camelfinger · 14/07/2018 15:43

My bag fits under the seat. I wish airlines would let people who don’t use the overhead lockers get off the plane first, so you don’t get held up by people faffing around with their heavy bags.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 14/07/2018 15:43

I only ever fly with hand luggage, if I can help it.

I hate waiting for the carousel and faffing around at the airport.

Mummyoflittledragon · 14/07/2018 15:43

I didn’t know Ryan air had started charging for cabin bags. Very good. The poor woman being hit by the champagne crate is ridiculous. Far more dangerous than a case. How can someone not realise this is a hazard and place in the hold?

FangAchePartDeux · 14/07/2018 15:43

Er because that is where my feet go

Wow, you must have huge feet then because I manage to put my handbag and laptop bag under my seat and still have space to stretch my legs!

Mummyoflittledragon · 14/07/2018 15:44

elfies
😂😂 the cabin staff are shit on enough.

mrscampbellblackreturns · 14/07/2018 15:45

I totally agree OP. Flew this week with easyjet and we actually missed our air traffic control slot and had to sit on the plane for 1.5 hours. The reason we missed our slot because of people taking so long to put all their bags/cases in the overheard lockers. It was infuriating.

I also worry when people are putting their cases up about getting hit on the head.

borlottibeans · 14/07/2018 15:45

Fine if it could be done without fares going up, but presumably Ryanair etc are making money from selling that hold space to people willing to pay for it which allows them to keep the cost of the seat down.

I had my first foreign holiday for over 5 years this spring in a European city. I'm not saying we're living on the breadline and I'm aware this is a first world problem if ever there was one, but it was a big stretch for us and without the budget airline hand luggage option we'd have spent our honeymoon freezing in a North Wales caravan park instead.

If you want to pay more for space and comfort and can afford to, please do that and leave the budget airlines to the rest of us who are willing to put up with a bit of inconvenience in return for the opportunity to travel.

lifeisabeachsometimes · 14/07/2018 15:47

It's not because people don't want to pay for checked baggage - they don't want to wait for it to come through at the other side.

So the flight is delayed or can not take off at all because you have crammed a week's worth of packing into a 'small' carry on bag and a rucksack just so you are not inconvenienced waiting a short time for a suitcase to arrive into the baggage area.

That is called entirely inconsiderate and selfish. You are the same person I guess with elbows out barging small toddlers out of the way to get to there first too so you can find a place for it all. I have got you. Well done you. Delightful.

FangAchePartDeux · 14/07/2018 15:48

I haven't heard that story but I'd never trust putting something delicate like that in the hold! I've had 4 expensive suitcases broken in the hold, not to mention the number of metal padlocks that were smashed off in transit. The airlines paid to have the suitcases fixed/replaced but it just goes to show how they treat hold items.

borlottibeans · 14/07/2018 15:49

if they can afford to fly they can afford to for one suitcase.

Hold luggage can double the cost of the flights. We'd have had to cut our holiday short by a night to fund that. Forgive me if doing exactly what the airline has advertised I can do has inconvenienced you slightly.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 14/07/2018 15:52

Really? I don't think it cost much more than 20 Euro or so for cabin baggage? The flight was actually cheaper than the train connection.

FangAchePartDeux · 14/07/2018 15:53

Not directed at me but I'll bite. How is it selfish not wanting to wait an hour and a half for your luggage to come out when you flight lands at 10pm? Surely you are just as selfish for not wanting to be slightly delayed if they have to put a few bags in the hold at the last minute.

Also, fyi, people with small children get priority boarding (i.e get on first) so there is no "barging them out the way"!

FangAchePartDeux · 14/07/2018 15:55

Really? I don't think it cost much more than 20 Euro or so for cabin baggage

It actually costs €30 per flight (at least that's what I paid 2 weeks ago) so for a family of 4 that would be an extra €240 in total just for luggage!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 14/07/2018 15:55

Ryanair has definitely improved since they introduced the two bags only if you pay for priority boarding.
I will check my little bag for free quite happily.

My biggest gripe is the eye watering price of hold baggage. £40 per bag, each way

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 14/07/2018 15:56

I don’t think I’m inconsiderate by flying with hand luggage.

I take one handbag and one hold-all, which is nice and squishy and fits perfectly in the overhead locker.

I’m well organised and only take what I need.

BrexitWife · 14/07/2018 15:57

Unfortunately, it’s not new.
When I was travelling a lot 20 years ago (so no added cost for suitcases at that time) people were already taking a suitcase with them in the plane. And there was already issues with space in the overhead compartment.

So I suspect that coming back to a single price wouldn't change that.

However, I do think that at some point there will be more restriction on size. Each time I’ve been flying recently, the airline has asked passengers to drop their suitcase in the hood for free when they board to try and ease the situation.
The biggest issue of course is that, if there is no space in the over head compartment, you can’t actually put said suitcase unde the seat in front of you. A bag yes, but a suitcase would be nearly impossible. Add to that your ‘handbag’ and I suspect things could besome very tight and actually a safety issue.

Bibesia · 14/07/2018 15:58

Given the problems caused by so many people bringing on maximum size cabin baggage, I'd have thought the answer is to reduce the maximum size allowed.
