Help, dh and I can't agree, who is bu?

Dh and I can't agree on a holiday.

He has decided last minute that he wants to do a package holiday abroad. I'm fine with that, but having researched I don't believe that we can afford anywhere decent.

Dh is talking about going to a 2* in Benidorm because it's cheap, I don't want to.

We usually go to a nice cottage in the UK in a beautiful location and I don't want to trade that for somewhere crap abroad.

It's not that I don't want to go abroad, I want a peaceful, family orientated destination but everything I find he says is too expensive.

Oh. He thought Majorca was in Greece?

And he wants to avoid partygoers but is stuck on Benidorm?

Greece isn't full of party goers. Certain resorts are, but not the whole country!

North east and south west Corfu are lovely.

You haven't really said what you are looking for apart from a walk to the beach.

What do you want to do in the evening, for example?

Majorca is also fabulous, away from the party resorts like Palma Nova. And is a short flight.

Undercoverbanana · 14/07/2018 13:46

What are your family hobbies OP? Do you trek? Run? Dive? Cycle? History? Architecture?

What is it that DP is so keen on about Benidorm?

Maybe there is a travel agent on here who could point DP in the direction of alternative options that suit what you all want.

pennycarbonara · 14/07/2018 13:53

Depends on age of kids but if they are well past toddler stage and quite easy to look after would do the Benidorm thing as a life experience to see what it's actually like. But take earplugs.

You will probably find there is more cultural stuff than you expected because you don't hear about that side of things. You can go and see stuff in the surrounding area, you don't have to spend all the time on the beach.

Supercali123 · 14/07/2018 13:53

We can't afford much and even Butlins ends up seeming expensive but the last few years we have got cheap flights to the South of France such as Nimes with Ryanair and then either booked an apartment through AirBNB or a mobile on an Al Fresco Campsite in Languedoc or Roussillon by the beach. www.alfresco-holidays.com/campsites/roussillon/

speakout · 14/07/2018 13:58

We have found family run 2 or 3 star small all inclusive in Turkey or Greece to be cheaper than holidays in the UK.

Plus I want sun on holiday. My kids love swimming, so a hotel with a pool and near the beach in a quiet resort is perfect.

I don't do self catering at all.

KokoandAllBall · 14/07/2018 13:59

Why are you against a holiday in the UK this year? If passports get held up, and summer is the worst time for renewing them, you may not get to go anywhere. Have a beach holiday here while we are having the weather for one!

Celebelly · 14/07/2018 14:02

Honestly, Benidorm would be my worst nightmare. Can you compromise and go somewhere else? Some parts of Canary Islands are really nice - we've been to Meloneras in Gran Canaria a few times and it's more about restaurants and nice walks on the esplanade rather than boozing and stag dos. It is a bit pricer but it's worth spending more money to go somewhere nice, I think.

We had a lovely holiday in Zante too that was all inclusive, £400 each for a week in Tsilivi, which isn't a club destination. Hotel was right on the beach and was very clean and quiet.

NicolaMarlowsMerlin · 14/07/2018 14:08

Your husband is BU. All those limitations are making it very hard to find something you would all enjoy.

FWIW, we went here last year www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g1438508-d1416565-Reviews-Lapida_Hotel-Lapta_Kyrenia_District.html

The rooms are basic but do have working air con, the owners are great, the food is good and it is CHEAP! You need a car to get into kyrenia or to the beaches to break things up a bit (can get taxis if you mostly want to laze by the pool). But it was, for what we paid, a brilliant holiday.

Notasunworshipper · 14/07/2018 14:15

I don't think dh particularly wants to go to Benidorm, I think it's more it's so cheap, he's decided he wants to go to Spain and Benidorm is the cheapest.

As for hobbies, we don't particularly have any exciting hobbies, when I'm on holiday I just like good food, nice walks, letting the kids play and run about.

Dh wants a pool and nice weather.

My eldest ds I think would very much like to do a bit of sightseeing, Paris, Barcelona, New York, dh isn't interested in any of that.

Dh wouldn't go to Eurocamp because of all the driving and he's worried about the ferry.

I very much feel like he just wants to go o a cheap sticky dump just so that we can say we've been abroad.

I loved Zante, dh wasn't keen.

Get budget flights to Girona, book a hotel or apartment separately in a nice coastal town or village.
There is a train line all the way down the coast that is easy to navigate.
You and eldest DS can do a daytrip to Barcelona.

Sparkletastic · 14/07/2018 14:40

Oh yes Girona is lovely and close to Barcelona. Malaga is also gorgeous.

Tell your dh there are no bragging rights in Benidorm unless you are seventeen and single.

So many other options op, you sound defeated already tbh I can see you ending up there unless you start to influence the discussion with a few no ways of your own.

Compromise with going to another resort in Spain or Mallorca.

Vickyyyy · 14/07/2018 15:15

Vickyyyy - you're not 'sticky Vicky' are you?

Heh no, and we also avoided her shows when we were there (and her daughters shows, family business it seems) as really don't want to see that Grin

babybrainusedtobesmart · 14/07/2018 15:19

Yuck. 2* Benidorm sounds a nightmare, especially with kids!

justaweeone · 14/07/2018 15:20

Flights are cheap to Algeria with Ryanair end of Aug
Then book accommodation separately
https://www.holidaylettings.co.uk/almeria-province/adate1.6810/adate2.6817/homsleepssmax.4/nocarryn.1/orderby.price/pool_yn.1/
Find central accommodation that you don't need a car, get cab from airport if you don't want to hire a car. Plus find accommodation with a washing machine and just take one checked in bag.
Eat in breakfast and lunch plus a couple of evenings then eat out for the rest of the evenings.

llangennith · 14/07/2018 15:21

Stay in the UK. With the weather we've been having recently what could be better?
Btw, have you seen how much it costs to renew passports?!

justaweeone · 14/07/2018 15:21

Almeria Blush

susurration · 14/07/2018 16:08

When we did the last camping trip, we flew into Rome and stayed at Camping Fabulous with Canvas. There was a bus right outside the campsite going straight into Rome and towards the coast as well for sightseeing.

GruffaloPants · 14/07/2018 17:10

Try sky scanner for cheap flights, and go to a holiday camp (eurocamp/canvas/allcamps).

Undercoverbanana · 14/07/2018 17:39

If all your DH is interested in is a pool then just find your local lido.

You can sit around doing nothing and some serious swimming locally. The weather is still fab here.

I can’t understand why he wants to go anywhere based on these requirements.
