To be worrying about the size of the spiders that will be coming in when autumn comes

Do you think all this warm weather will have made them grow? Do I need to expect tarantula sized beasts? 😫

Well I had not thought about it but your right. Shock

RhinoGirl · 14/07/2018 10:24

shudders i’ve had two decent sized ones already, i’m dreading september

SeagullsStopItNow · 14/07/2018 10:27

There was a monster on my front door a few days ago. I couldn’t go in my house, I stood on the drive contemplating setting up camp there till it moved.
I can’t expain why I feel the fear I do when I see a big spider. I know it can’t hurt me but the thought of it touching me and feeling it’s legs on my skin give me the shivers.

Frosty66612 · 14/07/2018 10:32

I had a few monsters last November so I’m really not looking forward to the end of autumn this year. I’m fully expecting them to be huge!

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/07/2018 10:42

There are 650 species of spiders in the UK, all with their own particular maximum size. Species with a small size aren't going to suddenly grow into huge spiders just because we're had a hot summer.

As to whether there'll be more spiders this autumn ... it depends. They feed on a variety of insects (not just flies). So it rather depends on how the prey insects have fared this summer ... and some of them will have found the dry conditions very trying.

Ifailed · 14/07/2018 10:44

They are probably already in your house, it's just that you haven't seen them yet as they are nocturnal. Once the days get a lot shorter, you'll start noticing them.

Frosty66612 · 14/07/2018 10:45

My DP told me that the big house spiders we get are actually living in our homes all year round and only start coming out from hiding during
Autumn to find a mate. Is this true? The thought of them being here all the time fills me with terror

Rebooting · 14/07/2018 10:48

Frosty the truth doesn’t matter. You need to tell yourself whatever allows you to function.

Eg
The massive hairy bastards come in rarely, run around like terrifying idiots then - crucially - go straight back outside again.

Frosty66612 · 14/07/2018 10:50

@rebooting this is very true!

The worst time for me was when I had 3 HUGE black spiders at in different rooms running around fast. They were literally getting from one side of the room to the other in the space of 2 seconds. I had to get a neighbour to help me as I was living alone then and was having a complete melt down.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 14/07/2018 10:51

YANBU Sad

Grumpyoldwoman007 · 14/07/2018 11:01

I think the answer is to stop hoovering from August and under no circumstances move the furniture around.

Doooomed! We’re all dooomed!

I'm smearing clove oil on all the window ledges and vents already.

I must admit the thought of massive autumn spiders has crossed my mind on more than one occasion this summer Sad

sharkirasharkira · 14/07/2018 11:16

Op, my solution is just to never open the windows, even in this heat it doesn't work, they still get in

gamerchick · 14/07/2018 11:21

They're mostly already in your house, doing their spidery duty keeping the beasties down. You'll only usually see them when they come out to breed.

That's the thanks they get, spend all year being pest control but as soon as they get horny and want to get laid they get evicted for their troubles Grin

gamerchick · 14/07/2018 11:24

One way to get rid of them is to locate some cellar spiders. They are the little bodies and long spindly legs that just make webs everywhere and dont bother anyone. They eat the big black things that make a thud when they drop off the wall. You can find them in warehouses.

Idratherhaveacupoftea · 14/07/2018 11:27

Make a thud ConfusedConfused

Mrsharrison · 14/07/2018 11:29

I'm spraying peppermint oil all over the house.
I'm dreading them.

Greenglassteacup · 14/07/2018 11:30

I’m also dreading September for this reason, I hate them

Carboholic · 14/07/2018 11:33

EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!

WIBU to move to another house now, if the spiders are in this one? (Completely misses point)

Rebooting · 14/07/2018 11:36

They are not already in the house.

See my earlier post.

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/07/2018 11:45

Just remember - you're never more than two feet from a spider

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/07/2018 11:46

No, not really, I just made that up. It's as good a fact as many others in this thread.

Ifailed · 14/07/2018 11:47

WIBU to move to another house now,? I'm afraid not, unless it is a really new-build. There over 100 species of insects and spiders that co-inhabit our homes, even the most scrubbed and polished ones.

They range from the spiders mentioned, through to things like the House Scorpion (only 5 mm long), the Mason Wasp that excavates holes in the mortar to make nests and wonderfully named Devil's Coach Horse.

None of these will do you any harm (though I do know that's not what frightens some people, a phobia is a very real thing), and indeed they keep each other in check. If your home was completely spider-less, you would really notice the increase in flies, which can spread some nasty diseases.

yummychocolate · 14/07/2018 11:49

We already have some in our house and it's not even autumn. Eeek.
