To be worrying about the size of the spiders that will be coming in when autumn comes

Do you think all this warm weather will have made them grow? Do I need to expect tarantula sized beasts? 😫

Is it just me who's now worried that there's a pack of spiders hiding behind the sofa, watching me and gossiping about the fact that I'm still in my pyjamas at lunchtime?

Burrumpeel · 14/07/2018 11:58

Ah, but if the spiders are larger, they'll be a larger conker crop so there's more to put in the corners to keep them out!

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 14/07/2018 12:02

I had a massive one in the house last night, DP is away with work and it's running around somewhere.

Gilead · 14/07/2018 12:26

I let them be, they eat the flies which are currently far more annoying.

dairyfarmerswife · 14/07/2018 12:34

One way to get rid of them is to locate some cellar spiders. They are the little bodies and long spindly legs that just make webs everywhere and dont bother anyone. They eat the big black things that make a thud when they drop off the wall. You can find them in warehouses

Yep, that's true. My house is over run with them has a healthy population of cellar spiders and I very rarely see the big hairy ones. The house is very old and full of beams so I couldn't get rid of them if I wanted to. Instead I get rid of the webs now and again but let most of the spiders live in the corners. Perhaps I should start marketing cellar spiders for arachnophobia?? I could post them out Grin

A0001 · 14/07/2018 12:35

Make sure you start leaving the cellar spiders in the house (the spindly ones that stay in the corner in their messy webs).

They eat the big ones, and you’ll have far fewer of them.

Frosty66612 · 14/07/2018 12:38

How do they fit those big beasts in their tiny bodies? Do they trap them in their webs and then consume them slowly over time? shudder

Shumpalumpa · 14/07/2018 12:40

Toughen up people, don't be such little boys!

Imagine if you were living in Australia.

I saw a big one last night, caught it using a bowl and piece of A4 card, released it outside. Yes, I shuddered a bit but no biggie.

Cross posts x 100!

gamerchick · 14/07/2018 12:47

Make a thud

Yep, I've heard the big buggers hit the deck as I've watched them drop off the walls. I'm not scared of spiders but I did put my feet up on the settee Grin

Lizzie48 · 14/07/2018 13:00

I'm not bothered about spiders, very few actually hurt you in this country and they're more afraid of us than we are of them. My cats keep the numbers down anyway. And as PPs have said, they kill flies and that's enough to make me not want to kill them. My DDs scream when they see them, though.

Come late summer, though, and wasps can turn me into a quivering wreck, though lol. Grin

Kit10 · 14/07/2018 13:07

I'm dreading it. My husband is working away until mid September 😭😭 thankfully DS1 is pretty good at dealing with them if he's awake when I see one!!

ClarkWGriswold · 14/07/2018 13:19

Toughen up people, don't be such little boys!

Eh? Aren’t we lead to believe little boys love spiders? Not sure what you point is supposed to be

userofthiswebsite · 14/07/2018 13:25

I detest them, and bar the small ones, I have a terrible fear of them. Worse place they can go is the ceiling. I've had two big ones already. Luckily both were on the wall so I squished them in kitchen towel and chucked them down the loo.
Major disadvantage of living alone!!!

redcaryellowcar · 14/07/2018 13:40

There was someone on a local Facebook group who had found an escaped pet spider, I'd rather find a regular garden spider I think!

GuntyMcGee · 14/07/2018 13:46

My home tends to attract the cellar spiders. They're freaky looking things, but they tend to keep themselves to themselves in the corners, so I can handle that.

What I can't handle are the dangly ones. The ones that you'll notice walking along the ceiling and the next time you look up, they're inches from the top of your head, spinning around like creepy acrobats. Those ones bother me and DH will have to evict them.

Weirdly, my grandads house used to attract loads of cellar spiders, but my mums house always attracts the really big house spiders. I wonder why?

Windyone · 14/07/2018 13:52

Last year someone recommended Dethlac spray on here. I got a 3 pack from Amazon and sprayed it round all skirting, doors etc. Also spraying essential oil was recommended so mix with water and spray around doors, windows etc!
The only spider I had was in the one room I didn't spray.

gekiort · 14/07/2018 13:54

Why do spiders grow bigger when it's warm?

I mean I don't like them but surely that can't actually be true

Frosty66612 · 14/07/2018 13:58

I remember reading an article about a man who found an enormous bird eating tarantula on the street in leicester (had escaped from someone’s house). The RSPCA took it away to be looked after as wouldn’t last long out in the Open in a British climate.
I would genuinely drop down dead on the spot if i’d been the one to discover it

ManicUnicorn · 14/07/2018 14:04

They really do put a dampener on Autumn don't they. It's such a lovely season otherwise with the leaves changing colour and the cooler damp air and the knowledge that Christmas is on the horizon.

I honestly think the best thing to stop spiders is a cat. Or even better two cats. My parents had two cats for years and we rarely saw a spider, they used to eat them all. We'd get up in the morning and find the odd leg though.

TheMaddHugger · 14/07/2018 14:12

Come to Australia. I guarantee you won't be concerned with the size of Spiders Where you are at the mount Smile

TheMaddHugger · 14/07/2018 14:13

moment, not mount

IndieTara · 14/07/2018 14:14

I moved house 2 months ago into spider central. Hate them

BarefootHippieChick · 14/07/2018 14:36

I don't mind spiders, they keep the nasty bugs and flies at bay. I always feel a bit sorry for them when I see one half chewed, hanging out the side of my cats mouth.

roboticmom · 14/07/2018 15:15

It's so interesting that those tiny body, long leg ones are being recommended on here. I've been keeping them alive since I noticed they had the big horrible spiders in their web. I am terrified of spiders so it goes against the grain a bit but they really do keep themselves to themselves. And they move slowly. I think that makes a difference. Annoying webs, but I think of them as my protectors keeping me safe. Oh and I haven't seen a BIG spider alive in my house for a few years. I've jinxed myself now... there's probably one under my bed.
