To think the AMA section needs to go

It’s either

“I’m vulnerable as hell, ask me anything” (come and gawp at me)

or

“My job / life involves some sort of care for the vulnerable, ask me anything” (come and gawp at the misfits)

Fucking awful Angry

I am loving AMA! So fascinating to hear from people who's lives are different to mine, or similar. Yes there are likely some trolls but who cares, it's entertaining. I just read the balonz thread recently and although it was all nonsense it was still hilarious! Completely agree that you are patronising people heavily by suggesting they are all vulnerable, op. I've found the tone generally quite respectful. I am far more uncomfortable at times in Aibu when people really do seem in a vulnerable dilemma and people wade in with awful things they'd never say in rl.

GarethSouthgateWould · 14/07/2018 20:30

www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/wiki/index

Is how Reddit verify.

They also have rules about AMA which MN don't to avoid exploiting potentially vulnerable people or exciting the perverts which MN isn't, with the I've been sexually abused as a child, I'm the child of a paedophile, I'm an incel, I have X or Y disorder, I'm a sexual submissive etc threads that are on MN.

FesteringCarbuncle · 14/07/2018 20:37

Where did the incel one go?
Was it deleted

CodLiverOil556 · 14/07/2018 20:37

I started a AMA thread on the job I do. I was fed up with the amount of rubbish that's sprouted and wanted to put people straight. My thread is in classics as most people thought it was helpful and answered a lot of their questions.

Hide the topic if you don't want to read it

hattiebugatti · 14/07/2018 20:54

What is AMA?

AynRandTheObjectivist · 14/07/2018 20:58

Ask Me Anything.

GarethSouthgateWould · 14/07/2018 21:03

Yes the incel one was deleted. It was gross.

AynRandTheObjectivist · 14/07/2018 21:05

Damn, there was an incel one? I can't believe I missed such a glorious opportunity!

FesteringCarbuncle · 14/07/2018 21:06

I only saw the op by the incel where he was painting himself as a nice, harmless guy. I guess it went downhill from there

hattiebugatti · 14/07/2018 21:08

Thanks so much. Smile

It is very easy to verify AMAs. If I was to do one on reddit they could ask me to upload a proof of identity and then check this online which would show I work for who I claim to work for. Its not difficult.

TaraCave · 15/07/2018 09:03

Agree. I think those threads are complete shite and avoid them. They remind me of the website "Just ask" that teenagers used.
Morally AMA just doesn't sit well with me, I'm not entirely sure why but it just doesn't feel right at all.

IAmLurkacus · 15/07/2018 09:24

I agree with the OP there are posts/threads on that topic which are definitely cause for concern.

In particular there’s one I reported on the first post (I’m sure OP knows the one I mean) because I could see how it was going to go. MN have acknowledged the report hours ago and it’s still standing.

This is a parenting website that has taken to deleting posts of people calling out child abuse, yet allows posts/threads advocating FOR child abuse to stand.

SoupDragon · 15/07/2018 09:26

Unless you upload someone else’s proof of identity.

IAmLurkacus · 15/07/2018 09:27

TaraCave agreed it’s like people raised on ask.fm without anyone intervening to safeguard have now reached adulthood with a very skewed idea of what’s normal

I did like the gynaecologist thread though

C8H10N4O2 · 15/07/2018 10:02

Unless you upload someone else’s proof of identity

More than one source is required - its not a case of simply uploading a picture of eg an office pass.

Some people ask for confidential verification by the mod team. When this happens its labelled as a confidentially verified poster to show that only a small team have been able to verify the poster rather than the cross checking of the whole audience.

That is how the official AMA section built as a trusted brand.

They also have an unverified AMA which is clearly distinguished from the verified version.

Other sites trying AMA without making that distinction very clear have found they descend rapidly into troll sections.

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 15/07/2018 10:12

As you dislike something it should be removed - seems fair enough to me.

I don't like this thread. Should it be removed? Smile

AynRandTheObjectivist · 15/07/2018 10:26

No, the argument was a bit more sophisticated than that.

Zucker · 15/07/2018 10:28

It's really interesting to see people refuse point blank to believe that another website could have proper checks and procedures for verifying people for AMA chats.

Especially considering the clusterfuck MN has shown itself to be in the past in relation to internet security, staff checks, password safety, board charity/grief scams, scammers at Christmas.....

The unverified AMA section here will be added to that list in time.

PortiaCastis · 15/07/2018 10:28

I agreeTara it doesn't sit right with me either as there could be quack doctors giving out iffy advice which some people would fall for.
I like finds post hear hear find

NicoAndTheNiners · 15/07/2018 17:07

Well there could be quack doctors giving out health advice on the health boards, etc. So o don’t think getting rid of AMA would solve that issue.

Haint · 15/07/2018 17:32

The mumsnet AMA is very Daily Mail. Salacious and overly concerned with anything slightly grotty or risqué

crunchymint · 15/07/2018 17:45

But AMA is a brand already elsewhere, and it is different to someone posting a comment on a thread.
Of course no system is 100% foolproof. I could use all of DPs documents and upload them claiming to be him. But it is unlikely and does provide some safety. Here AMA requires nothing more than a device to access an internet to claim I ma whoever I want to be.
And some of the threads are very inappropriate.
