To think the AMA section needs to go

Risksrevealvalues · 14/07/2018 08:11

It’s either

“I’m vulnerable as hell, ask me anything” (come and gawp at me)

or

“My job / life involves some sort of care for the vulnerable, ask me anything” (come and gawp at the misfits)

Fucking awful Angry

OP posts:
crunchymint · 14/07/2018 09:28

Agree OP. I have read ones that I highly doubt are real, but people are clearly believing them.
And yes Reddit verify people are who they say they are for AMA threads. MN does not. So it is very different.

beardymcbeardy · 14/07/2018 09:34

Only if you think aibu should go as a section because all it is is an excuse for the biggest bunch of vipers to pile in on the op for sport most 9f the time. With the odd sane answer thrown in for good measure. So yabu.

PortiaCastis · 14/07/2018 09:36

Yes a lot of them are pure shite but if they didn't have their own section they'd be taking over active threads again

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 14/07/2018 09:41

Why should it go? I don't like, believe in or read most of the AMAs. I think they're really attention-seeking but, some people are particularly needy for validation, for people to be interested in them - and some people are. So what's wrong with that?

Perhaps you're talking of the 'I'm 26 stones - AMA' thread. Well, that poster is an adult, we're all adults here and, if responders would pile on that poster without any thought then that's on them and they're low. The same can be said about any poster who replies to a poster who appears vulnerable.

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 14/07/2018 09:44

I enjoyed the footballers wife, no vulnerabilities there. If you don’t like it, don’t read it.

Just because you don’t like it, it seems a bit mean to suggest they shouldn’t exist.

DownHereInTheHorridHouse · 14/07/2018 09:45

I think they're great - I've seen three on jobs I used to have/fields I worked in, one on the job I have just now, one on a health condition I have, and it has been fascinating to get an insight into how other people find these things. There are obvious fake ones - a few just last night/today - but even those are interesting because of the questions that are asked.

As someone who spends hours on LinkedIn just being nosey about other people's jobs, it's ideal for me, and it does give a great insight into some roles.

AynRandTheObjectivist · 14/07/2018 09:46

I think it's like anything on the internet, you have to remember that it might not all be true.

NotAnotherUserName5 · 14/07/2018 09:49

I honestly doubt many are genuine when I read them.
Yanbu

crunchymint · 14/07/2018 09:51

But it is not like anything on the internet that might not be true. Reddit actually does verify AMA threads.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 14/07/2018 09:54

Reddit might... in the same way that companies have "How's my driving?" stickers on their vehicles... I wouldn't believe Reddit necessarily either. Who are they? A larger chatboard.

Xenia · 14/07/2018 09:54

I think they are really interesting particularly the Jewish one.

Perhaps I should start I am Xenia ask me anything one!

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 14/07/2018 10:14

You’re opening premise is wrong.AMA is a straightforward Q&A often with individuals none of us encounter in real life and don’t get opportunity to ask such direct questions.

It’s either

“I’m vulnerable as hell, ask me anything” (come and gawp at me). No.
I don’t consider barrister, pilot, teacher to be vulnerable as hell

“My job / life involves some sort of care for the vulnerable, ask me anything” (come and gawp at the misfits) Misfits? How offensive.

C8H10N4O2 · 14/07/2018 10:32

I wouldn't believe Reddit necessarily either. Who are they? A larger chatboard.

With half a billion regular users from all walks of life and all places, plus over half a million subreddits hardly just a larger chatboard. Its probably the closest anyone has come to recreating usenet in web form.

I've already posted on this to the thread in Site Stuff but basically AMA has become a brand in its own right which carries the implication of verification. It also attracts even more trolls than the rest of MN.

At least make the topic name "Unverified AMA" or similar.

CadyHeron · 14/07/2018 10:38

YABU. You can't demand a whole topic to go just because you don't like it.
By that reckoning get rid of the style and beauty boards then please as I find them boring and full of insecure people agonising over their choice of dress.
Just own your choice, people! Smile

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 14/07/2018 10:39

In fairness none of mn is verifiable,as mnhq habitually reinforce
I’ve seen some truly dreadful advice on mn. Trick is be cautious of all posters esp the most bombastic
Biggest lies on mn are
What’s for tea? lean venison with jus. Purple broccoli and sweet potato mash
Everyone dp is top of his game huge salary with travel and needs a housewife cause he can’t do laundry
All the enriching activities it’s all piano this, cello that, and sports coaching. no one posts the kids are on iPads and fortnite.

wanderings · 14/07/2018 11:15

YABU. I think most AMA's are far more interesting than...
"AIBU re my DH's hobby which I can't possibly disclose?"
"AIBU to be fuming at this teacher?"
"AIBU re. taking shoes off?"
"AIBU re. the bit of road outside my house?"
"AIBU to confiscate my DC's phones?"
"AIBU re. my friend who thinks the Earth is flat?"

DioneTheDiabolist · 14/07/2018 11:23

YABU OP. It's been much more entertaining and no more trolly than AIBU or FWR.

Harveyy · 14/07/2018 11:30

I was a Prison Officer for 20 years AMAwww.mumsnet.com/Talk/AMA/3304362-i-was-a-prison-officer-for-20-years-ama

This one was shut down pretty quickly by someone else who worked in the same profession. Rightly so imho

SlinkyMalinkiTheFeminazi · 14/07/2018 18:01

If you don't the section don't read it

Its not rocket science!

SlinkyMalinkiTheFeminazi · 14/07/2018 18:02
  • if you don't like the section I meant
SlinkyMalinkiTheFeminazi · 14/07/2018 18:05

How does reddit verify people?

Sends someone round to check their story holds up?

(eyeroll)

ProperLavs · 14/07/2018 18:09

I can stand it. It's putting me off coming here tbh. I never open the threads, just seeing them gives me the heebies.

NicoAndTheNiners · 14/07/2018 18:13

I reckon only about 10% of the threads on MN overall are genuine so if only 10% of the AMA ones are then I’d say that’s about right! Grin

umpteennamechanges · 14/07/2018 18:16

YABU.

Who are you to judge who is vulnerable? That's very, very patronising.

I was thinking of doing an AMA about having bipolar disorder and having been in a psychiatric hospital...no doubt you'd tell me I'm 'vulnerable'.

I hate to shit on your biases but I'm actually a fully working member of society with a six figure job in the City, a perfectly lovely marriage and no current vulnerabilities at all.

I think this is the most patronising OP I've ever read.

PortiaCastis · 14/07/2018 18:19

Reddit probably does what fb do and that is ask you to take a webcam pic of yourself holding a driving licence or other photo ID with occupation on it and send it to them, then they compare your own photo with the one on the ID
