To visit I my family with a swollen neck??

I am supposed to be going up to see my family today, including my elderly granny and a 2 month old baby.

Problem is my face/gland on one side of my face swelled up on Thursday and has gotten even worse today. I don't feel Ill, have no temperature, throat isn't sore, no painful teeth- basically just a painful swollen face/neck?!

Do I still go and see them or should I stay away?

Any chance it could be mumps?

hidinginthenightgarden · 14/07/2018 08:11

Doesn't sound like the kind of thing that is contagious. Sounds like you have had a reaction to something.

I would still go. Take some antihistamine.

recoveringmummy · 14/07/2018 08:31

I've had mumps so I doubt it, I just look horrific lol. No other symptoms at all, maybe more tired than normal but that's it!

I wouldn't go near a baby or elderly frail person until you've recovered. Could be viral and contagious!

PlantsOfPerspective · 14/07/2018 08:49

No, I wouldn't go - it's not worth the risk. I'd also go to see my GP.

Foodylicious · 14/07/2018 08:51

I wouldn't go.
Also sound's like you need to rest
anyway and maybe see your go?

recoveringmummy · 14/07/2018 08:51

Already spoken to the dr and he wasn't overly concerned, wonder if it's an infected saliva gland. It did start after I went to the dentist so wonder if she hit something?!

bathildab · 14/07/2018 08:52

I was going to suggest a saliva gland stone. If they get stuck trying to exit they can be extremely painful. Take ibuprofen and go.

LizTaylorsFabulousTurban · 14/07/2018 08:54

My neck has been swelling up since Tuesday. Horribly painful to move head but no sore throat or anything... Until yesterday when I woke up feeling shocking. It might be something brewing.

applesandpears56 · 14/07/2018 08:54

Well I would go to a gp Asap - a swollen face can be a sign of something very serious

applesandpears56 · 14/07/2018 08:54

Heart failure, cancer etc

Canshopwillshop · 14/07/2018 08:59

Applesandpears - not v helpful are you?!

recoveringmummy · 14/07/2018 09:06

Geez heart failure? Cancer? I'm 35 so I doubt it! Plus I had an ECG last week so know my hearts ok! I think it's a salivary gland that's gotten blocked by the dentist but will definitely go to the gp Monday if it's not gone down!

My mum had a blocked salivary gland and her face and neck swelled up so it could be something to do with your salivary gland, especially if you’ve been to the dentist

mumoftwo1975 · 14/07/2018 09:48

A way of cleaning a blocked salivary gland is to eat something a bit sour or citrussy- say grapefruit and chew on that side. My son had what you describe, caused by a tic (tourettes) he has that makes him chomp his teeth hard and made the pipework there spasm- maybe the movement at the dentist had done the same x

DaphneDiligaf · 14/07/2018 09:52

I didntvwant to be a scaremonger but it can be a sign of NHL. Please take it seriously.

Slartybartfast · 14/07/2018 09:54

can you ask the parents or relatives of those you are intending to visit?

ProfYaffle · 14/07/2018 10:00

Just to echo mumof2's advice, I had a blocked salivary gland a couple of weeks ago. NHS website recommended rubbing lemon juice on it - it worked! Cleared really quickly, most of the swelling gone in an afternoon.

Canshopwillshop · 14/07/2018 10:32

What is NHL?

recoveringmummy · 14/07/2018 12:29

NHL is non Hodgkin's lymphoma- everything I've read on that days that it would be a hard painless lump- this is very sore and moves about. I will get it checked out on Monday. In the meantime I shall chew on some lemons!

Can shop - how rude! You aren’t helpful telling the op to dismiss what could be a serious symptom. The last person I knew had this had cancer of the thymus and this was their only symptom.
A swollen face isn’t normal.

Why did you have an ecg? What symptoms was that for?

applesandpears56 · 14/07/2018 13:30

www.macmillan.org.uk/information-and-support/coping/side-effects-and-symptoms/other-side-effects/superior-vena-cava-obstruction.html

It can also be a symptom of a blood clot

If it’s minor yes it probably is a swollen gland but you should be aware of watching for other symptoms

Canshopwillshop · 14/07/2018 15:28

applesandpears - not rude at all. Leaping in with the most serious possible causes is obviously going to scare the shit out of someone, especially as it’s the weekend so can’t go to the Dr. OP says she has already spoken to Dr in any case. And just where did you see me telling the OP to dismiss the symptoms?

recoveringmummy · 14/07/2018 16:01

To be clear it's my neck and only just into my lower jaw that's swollen. ECG was because I had palpitations which was due to stress as I have had a lot going on in my life at the moment. I appreciate the concern about NHL but the dr did not seem overly concerned and I will go in on Monday. I have tried chewing lime but no help :-/ xx

OP posts:
applesandpears56 · 14/07/2018 19:21

Look - palpitations and neck/face swelling - I’d go back to the gp ASAP

Can shop - we have a difference of opinion on how to answer - you just need to respect that rather than berate Another poster. 80% likely it is nothing serious. You have chosen to point that out to the op. I feel enough people are pointing out that 80% (including the dr she has seen), so I am instead choosing to point that it could also be something rarer (the 20). It’s good for the op to know all the facts. I’d personally want to know if it could be something serious rather than not be told because someone was worried about scaring me.
