Aibu to wonder how you can claim JSA for years

I know a couple who are in mid 20s. They have claimed JSA for five years plus one claims carers entitlement but does no caring. They get rent and council tax paid. Basically their lives seem to be one big day out. There are loads of jobs available locally so why do they not get made to try one. Doesn't make sense to me.

If one claims carers then they would be on income support not jsa and I had a customer today who had been on IS since 1992 - so long term benefits do happen, and frequently too.

However they would get £150.85 per week between them (assuming no disabilities) £600 per month for all bills (except housing) and all food, its not all one big day out when you have £21.55 per day to live on.

KlutzyDraconequus · 13/07/2018 23:37

Oo look a wide eyed benefit bashing threadnlate in a friday. Not seen one of these for at least a week.

Hmm
sweetkitty · 13/07/2018 23:39

Not outing myself I know a family who do not work at all, children definitely receive FSM. Drive a new BMW and a mini, dressed in designer clothes and go on foreign holidays twice a year but only for 5 days at a time. They’ve been doing this for years.

Could be inheritance I suppose or long term sick.

HitsAndMrs · 13/07/2018 23:39

£600 a month for food and bills is more than most people though. I've lived on less whilst working with 2 children and also paid my own rent and council tax.

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 13/07/2018 23:40

What a crock of shite. If one half of the couple is claiming Carer's Allowance, they won't be on JSA in the first place. They'll be on Income Support, which is designed for healthy people who are exempt from jobseeking (in this case, because they have caring duties). This makes it likely that the other half receives PIP and ESA, rather than JSA.

How do you know this person does no caring? How do you supposedly know what benefits they are claiming? You've just made a shitty assumption, haven't you?

And of course they receive a contribution towards their rent and CT, they are clearly unable to work.

Yanbu.
I'm not sure how this sort of thing is allowed this happen, but it does.

Talkativeparrot · 13/07/2018 23:49

I know the person does no caring as the caree told me they let the carer claim so CA so they don't have to work. I don't know how they do it but they are out everyday thanks to Facebook.

Sounds good. You ought to get in in that action. Go on. Don't sit there being jealous and resentful. You too could live the dream.

MotherforkingShirtballs · 14/07/2018 00:00

You forgot to answer some important questions.

  1. Just how big, in exact inches please, is their flat screen TV?
  1. How many mobile phones do they own and can you confirm that they are indeed the latest models?

And if you could please comment something about 'hardworking taxpayers' and 'taking the piss' that should complete my Benefit Bingo card. If I call "house" first then I win one, a free council one of course Grin

knittingdad · 14/07/2018 00:09

I was on JSA not too long ago and it was nothing like you describe. I didn't receive enough housing benefit to cover my rent. It was so incredibly stressful.

You do realise that every time the system is tightened up because of stories about people living in luxury on benefits that it makes life even harder for normal people who are desperate for a job and need some help while they look for one.

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 14/07/2018 00:11

@Motherforking You forgot one vital question: what's the name of the goat?

MarieVanGoethem · 14/07/2018 00:15

Do I get a prize for first mention of The Goat?

Personally I'd prefer a donkey if the government are going to start dishing out benefit payments. It could keep the lawn down, I could ride it places, & I'd absolutely want it registered as a Service Donkey so I could take it EVERYWHERE. It could carry my shopping home for me. More environmentally friendly than my having to use a TaxiCard trip...

lavendargreen · 14/07/2018 00:15

How on EARTH do you know SO MUCH about this 'couple' @talkativeparrot ???

I don't believe for a fleeting second, that they 'told you' all this.

So how do you know so much about their personal circumstances and personal finances?

Is this a reverse ?????????? Hmm

Graphista · 14/07/2018 00:16

You know NOTHING! My dad denies my mum is his carer - no benefits involved just his pride.

He is bedridden and would literally die without all she does, he still denies it.

Being "out every day" also DOES NOT mean there are no illnesses, caring responsibilities involved. Plenty of sick & disabled people are out every day - or do you think we're meant to all be fucking locked up in institutions again?!

I repeat you know NOTHING.

MotherforkingShirtballs · 14/07/2018 00:16

Oh my god, I forgot the goat.

I get Carers' Allowance and haven't received mine yet, must chase it up when the DSS opens on Monday but not until after I've watched Jezza Kyle on my huge-ass flat screen.

MarieVanGoethem · 14/07/2018 00:16

Drat. Cross-posted with FedUp. No donkey for me...

cue all the tiny violins

FissionChips · 14/07/2018 00:16

You sound like some type of weirdo stalker op.

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 14/07/2018 00:17

Beat you to the goat @MarieVanGoethem

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 14/07/2018 00:20

If I had a goat, I'd call it Geoff

MotherforkingShirtballs · 14/07/2018 00:20

I'd absolutely want it registered as a Service Donkey so I could take it EVERYWHERE

I would love for you to do this. I'm having a proper giggle at donkey in the library, donkey at the co-op, donkey on a slide at the park. Me announcing to the DC "let's play ..... ..... Wonky Donkey!"

Fuck. I'd buy a donkey just for that.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 14/07/2018 00:20

I get universal credit and it’s not one big fucking day out as your described I never got enough to cover my rent so ended up having to give up my home and I couldn’t afford to feed myself so I ended up living out of the food bank it’s not an easy ride like you think it is so don’t be such a judgemental asshole when you really have no idea what your talking about you don’t know how hard it is to live on the bread line. Just because you saw it on Facebook doesn’t mean they are living the life of Riley you could look at my Facebook and think am doing just fine the reality is a heck of a lot different.

Alaaya · 14/07/2018 00:22

Definitely quit your job and claim carer's allowance and JSA, OP. No reason not to, from what you're saying.

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 14/07/2018 00:23

If I had a donkey, I'd call it Melvin
