To ask what the duck to get a friend who's had a baby

Please help me! I haven't a clue what to get her and the baby. She had him about 3 weeks ago and we're seeing them tomorrow.

What do you wish you had as a gift after having a baby? What was your favourite gift? What did you appreciate most? I've got her some Aiden and Anais muslins but that's it :/

Help! Aibu to call on Mumsnet so she doesn't get just a pack of sick cloths

Muslins, baby grows, clothes are always useful and what I appreciated most. Oh that and Wine and chocolate 😂😂

User12879923378 · 13/07/2018 15:59

Giant muslins. Cute vests. A book of black and white images.

Osirus · 13/07/2018 15:59

I went through thousands of Muslins. And, if she’s breastfeeding, Lansinoh breast pads - the others just aren’t worth buying.

Merryoldgoat · 13/07/2018 16:01

Chocolate, cake, nice drinks (non-alcoholic).

I’ve just bagged up clothes from my babies and there’s MASSES he never even wore.

Avoid stuffed toys (I could stock a toy shop).

Muslins and swaddle wraps are quite nice too.

Grumpbum · 13/07/2018 16:01

My favourite gift was a hamper delivered on line from cook food.

Lollyice · 13/07/2018 16:02

My mum made me a cake! I don't really remember what anyone else did. It was a parkin Grin
Jelly Cat toys are lovely, as are Moulin Roty.

Oly5 · 13/07/2018 16:04

My favourite gift was a lovely blanket. Can never have too many blankets with a baby!

applesisapple5 · 13/07/2018 16:04

Yes muslins are great, clothes BIGGER than 0-3, to get more wear, I got some gorgeous Neals yard new Mum bath oil which was such a treat. Chocolate and snacks, individual fun size ones that they can grab in a second... my Mum friends got me these and I was so grateful!

TheClientList · 13/07/2018 16:04

Clothes that they can grow into, maybe get something for the parents aswell. Books or sensory books would be ideal.

speakout · 13/07/2018 16:06

Never used a muslin- I am sure useful to some, but not a very exciting gift.

I would get a nice hamper and fill it with goodies for the mother.

Fattygettingthin · 13/07/2018 16:07

Ooh good ideas! She is breast feeding :) so will get some of those pads. My choices are a bit limited to John Lewis as that's the only shop near me right now, I wasn't sure if tomorrow was a definite but it is!

So clothes older than 0-3..
Breast pads
Chocolate
Cake
Muslins
Treaty bath stuff

My best pressies were dishes of food I could heat up without cooking...soups, veggie couscous, rhubarb crumbles Not more stuff like toys and clothes.

Osirus · 13/07/2018 16:09

Maybe some newborn nappies. I received some packs and you do go through a lot.

Osirus · 13/07/2018 16:10

It’s great you’re being so thoughtful. I hope she appreciates it Smile

bakingdemon · 13/07/2018 16:12

Really nice ready meals from somewhere like M&S. And breastfeeding friends really like those buckets of chocolate crispy things they do as they need the energy.

lynzpynz · 13/07/2018 16:15

I’d text and say exactly what you have that you haven’t a clue, don’t want to just get her random stuff she doesn’t need and what practical things would she really like that you could help with as you’re popping into John Lewis before you come!

CanaBanana · 13/07/2018 16:24

The nicest gift I received was a life journal. It's designed for Mum to fill in with photos, memories and her hopes and dreams for her baby. Then it's gifted to the child on their 18th. I cried when I unwrapped it, it's so lovely. Doubt if you'd be able to get one by tomorrow though!

cornishmumtobe · 13/07/2018 16:26

Honestly we got so so so much for the baby but my favourite was when two mates came round with some AMAZING cakes and they had bought me wine and chocolate. It was so nice to get a gift for me!

Harebellmeadow · 13/07/2018 16:28

A vacuum drinks bottle from kleen kanteen that can be used for hot or cold drinks. Is a dream in summer with ice cubes.

tealandteal · 13/07/2018 16:29

John Lewis have lovely baby clothes for proper outfits when they are a bit older. They also have some nice treaty bath bits especially burts bees. I've read so many books whilst breastfeeding so if you think she might like that, it make a nice change from Netflix! A bombproof, leak proof water bottle would be good too.

reetgood · 13/07/2018 16:30

Food! Turn up with a meal, or online delivery vouchers, or nice cake. A friend got us a monthly coffee subscription which went down very well. Basically food which appears and can be eaten swiftly is the best.

kaytee87 · 13/07/2018 16:31

I wouldn't bother getting baby clothes.
I'd bring her a nice cake and flowers (in a bag or ready arranged in water).

LeighaJ · 13/07/2018 16:31

@Fattygettingthin

May I suggest my daughter's best bud...Ollie the Owl.

www.amazon.co.uk/Gro-Company-Light-Sound-Grofriend/dp/B0722QR3R1/ref=sr_1_4_a_it?keywords=Ollie&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1531495671&sr=8-4

He is hands down the best present we received and we didn't view him as an essential beforehand.

I would feel extremely awkward getting breast pads as a gift.

kaytee87 · 13/07/2018 16:33

Oh and maybe a big Tupperware with a nice chilli or something cooked for her.

Almostthere15 · 13/07/2018 16:33

I think good shower gel and body lotion or hand wash and cream is more realistic to the life of a new mum. You still get luxury but don't need the time for a bath. If she likes candles that can be nice, but not everyone is a fan.

I also really appreciated coffee shop vouchers as it's a good maternity leave activity. I was also given a really good vacuum cup which was ideal for breastfeeding.

I was most appreciative of presents for me, and selfishly was a little sad I didn't get many, because I always buy for mum and then token for baby.
