AIBU to think £1000 for a bedroom carpet is ridiculous?

We’ve been quoted £1000 for carpet underlay and fitting in a bedroom which is approximately 5m x 4m.

This seems a silly amount. It was a local carpet shop (London). Am trying Carpetright to see if they are cheaper.

I can’t believe carpets are this expensive! I asked for their cheapest bedroom carpet. How do people afford it?

Try online carpets and arrange a fitter separately, works out far cheaper

Thank you!

How do I find a fitter? Look online?

I used our local shop and paid £1500 for three receptions downstairs - used non wool as last wool carpet got eaten by moths but had premium underlay and that was fitted. Lounge is over 6m long. It is stain proof and lovely and bouncy still after 2 years. Think they saw you coming!

We just carpeted a similar sized room and the stairs for about £900 all in. Obviously it depends on the quality of the carpet. We got ours in House of Fraser and it's gorgeous.

We've just bought a lovely carpet (very soft and with lifetime warranty against stains) for a room 3.5m by 4m, including price of carpet, delivery, fitting and a thick underlay it's costing us £387. We're in the SE too.

OftenHangry · 13/07/2018 11:29

Is it cleaning itself?
Hosh, how big your bedroomConfused

Katescurios · 13/07/2018 11:29

Did they break down the costs?

If it was the carpet that made up the main portion then look for a remnant, you could get a nice piece that size for around £100.

We paid £2.3k for two receptions, hall stairs and landing and four bedrooms, including fitting, underlay and disposal of old carpet. Our local supplier works all over the country. They undercut Carpetright for better quality carpet. They're a family firm and lovely. www.jacarpetswarboys.co.uk/

Thank you Bluelady

If it's woven from unicorn wool, perfectly reasonable price

I use a little independant supplier, its just him and his son, but they are so much cheaper and lovely. On average he is about a third cheaper than the shops, and he knows what hes talking about so will only show you carpet suitable for the amount of foot traffic that the room will get!

MinorRSole · 13/07/2018 12:04

We found a fitter through word of mouth, just asked on local fb pages and went for one of the recommended ones. He worked for carpet right and did ours at the weekend

itsclaire · 13/07/2018 12:07

Phillipa12 This was an independent local guy who quoted £1000. I thought he’d be cheaper than the big shops.

Up north so probably a factor, but we just paid £2k for living room, stairs, landing and x 4 bedrooms. Not the cheapest carpet either, it's lovely and soft. Cost included underlay and fitting.

sugarbum · 13/07/2018 12:17

Depends really. I got £35 (per m2) carpet for our house (4 bed, landing, stairs and living room) and paid 4k. Which was still 3/4 of what Barratt homes was wanting (new build) We could have paid much less, but DH and DS2 were adamant they wanted 'that' carpet.

nellly · 13/07/2018 12:26

North also so adjust for that but I just paid 500 for two bedrooms fitted and with new underlay. I'm thrilled with the results and it wasn't at all the cheapest carpet option.
That was with carpet right I would definitely recommend.

I did the 0% finance. I could have paid up front but had heard rumours about them struggling so figured this way if they went under before fitting my carpet I wasn't out of pocket Grin

Plural · 13/07/2018 12:35

I'm in London and bought a good wool mix carpet and underlay online. An independent fitter then came To fit in. All in about 35m2 for £900.

Fairylea · 13/07/2018 12:37

Independent carpet shops tend to be much more expensive than somewhere like carpet right. However sometimes you do find independent shops have a remnant section where you can pick up room size bits of carpet very cheaply so always worth looking around.

We have just paid £1600 for four rooms - kitchen diner 8m x 4m so very large with top quality vinyl with 20 year guarantee, and three large ish rooms with carpet and underlay. So £1000 for one room is crazy!

Buteo · 13/07/2018 12:40

Ask for a breakdown of the cost - for the carpet, the underlay and the fitting. Does that figure include VAT? You might have asked for their cheapest carpet but if its £25 per sq m then there is half your cost.

itsclaire · 13/07/2018 20:25

Thanks all. Am going to get a few more quotes and compare. Will ask around to see if anyone knows a carpet fitter.

Go to John Lewis.

itsclaire · 13/07/2018 20:55

Our last one was from John Lewis and it was a shambles and the carpet hasn’t lasted, only three years old.
