AIBU to think £1000 for a bedroom carpet is ridiculous?

We’ve been quoted £1000 for carpet underlay and fitting in a bedroom which is approximately 5m x 4m.

This seems a silly amount. It was a local carpet shop (London). Am trying Carpetright to see if they are cheaper.

I can’t believe carpets are this expensive! I asked for their cheapest bedroom carpet. How do people afford it?

I’m still having trouble!

Had two more quotes in the £900s, don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Is it because it’s central London?

I haven't heard a good thing about Carpetright fitters OP. And when I went to get a quote for replacing lino in kitchen, the salesman was very pushy. I went with a small local shop in the end and whilst the fitting wasn't perfect its good enough and they were half the price!

That’s what I’m trying Blobby but as soon as I say the address they seem to double the price! It’s not a prestigious place or anything, just Zone 1

Itsclaire that is bonkers. Did you ask them why they have doubled the price? What I did in the end was use the info that Carpetright sent me (they drew up a plan and supplied the square footage or maybe its square metreage these days (!!!) needed) and worked out a cost for the material then asked directly before committing to anything for a rough guide of the fitting cost. Unfortunately when taking up the existing lino tiles I discovered the original flooring hadn't been laid properly so had to pay an extra £300 for re-screeding the floor Angry but its all good now. Smile

Please, please contact the carpet shop I recommended. I'll pm you my real name so you can tell them who's recommended them. They even supply and fit carpets in Scotland, it's got to be worth a try.

itsclaire · 17/07/2018 18:07

Hi Bluelady, I did ring them but haven’t had anyone answer the phone yet! Will keep trying!

I bought the cheapest carpet from Carpetright (polypropylene) and with fitting and underlay it came to £400 for a similar size room. I can believe that a decent non plastic carpet would cost £1000.

Stoveding · 17/07/2018 18:12

You need to know the square metre cost of the carpet (mine were about £18.99 and are 80/20) and the underlay cost.

Stoveding · 17/07/2018 18:14

Also look at designercarpetremnants.com and then find a local fitter on Facebook

Bluelady · 17/07/2018 18:18

Sorry about that. I hope you manage to get hold of them, they really are good.

We needed to do our small bedroom on the cheap after dd spilt paint on the old carpet. Went to carpetright and got the carpet for about £15/m I think and the underlay (can't remember the cost) but I'm sure all in we paid around £350. We fitted it ourselves after watching a YouTube video. Honestly very easy although time consuming and a bit of a faff. So if it's the cost of the fitters increasing the cost then you might want to consider it.

I did my whole upstairs ( 3 beds) hallway and stairs for about £500. Mind you it was almost the cheapest carpet in the shop 😁
